If you have interest in core branch like civil , mechanical, chemical etc then go for iits .. iits are good for these branches for research and also for placements ... But if you are in tier 2 or tier 3 college I suggest you not to pursue core branch and try to get good branche like cs , it ,ece because there are lot of reasons behind it . Try to get a tech branch it will also help you in your placements .

Few corrections: There is no cut off released by each NITs. There is a joint counselling and u have to fill choices in order of preference and u may be alloted seats based on your rank.
Madam, talk about JEE mains and JEE advanced test difference. That's where the complexity and frame of mind changes. JEE advanced is way different in approach and complexity. All in all. It's about brains and their problem solving ability.

I am nit rourkela alumni.. Only difference in iit vs nit is money.. Central govt allocated 400 cr per year for iit.. 200cr per year for nit.. Obviously infrastructure and research will be less efficient then iit
I went to NIT for BTech and IIEST for MTech as it was near to my home and in the City. I am happy with my placements both are top Institute with high reputation. Many of my friends are working in Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, US, UK, Australia, India in Top position some are without further education in their core branch's.
IIT and NIT were made for research so that the country couldprogress Technologically but on seeing the potential of the students in these colleges many multinational companies started hiring the students at very impressive packages hence many parent started prepairing the students for engineering in IIT and NIT so that they could get good packages but this led to the worsening of research quality in the colleges because the students sole aim was to secure good package, nowadays master student apply for placement rather than research the situation is in NIT is more worse as the research is very less and only aim of students is placement in IIT it is better but it is not as good as it used to be and and this is how the governments money is directly going to the corporate offices because the students are studying at a very subsidized rate in IIT and NIT but that investment is not in the benefit of country but in the benefit of corporate world.

You have not discussed about main difference. That's admission procedure and type of question asked. For NIT you have to crack JEE mains with a certain cutoff mark. But for IIT, you have to crack JEE Advanced after cracking JEE mains with a certain cutoff mark. JEE mains question is based on your NCERT books. Tricky and tough questions are few in physics and chemistry. Maths generally lengthy. Time and errorless perfection is the main criteria. But in Advanced, time is not the main factor. Main factor is your concept and intelligence. That's why IIT is much more ahead of NIT. Difference between IIT & NIT is their type of students and teachers also.

But for IIT, you have to crack JEE Advanced after cracking JEE mains with a certain cutoff mark. JEE mains question is based on your NCERT books. Tricky and tough questions are few in physics and chemistry. Maths generally lengthy. Time and errorless perfection is the main criteria. But in Advanced, time is not the main factor. Main factor is your concept and intelligence. That's why IIT is much more ahead of NIT. Difference between IIT & NIT is their type of students and teachers also.
