I often mistake Diddy Kong for Donkey Kong Jr. It's probably because that Diddy Kong's design may have been inspired by Donkey Kong Jr.'s design on the cereal box. It could also be that Diddy Kong himself was intended a reskin and replacement of Donkey Kong Jr. by Rare only to be accepted by the latter by Nintendo. Apparently, Nintendo liked the idea, it's just that they didn't like Diddy Kong design having the J on the shirt.

I can see that, but we know that the current DK is actually DK’s son, since he is Cranky’s grandson and Cranky is the original DK. No wonder Cranky is so bitter since he got mistreated by Mario.
