    How to repair the hour meter on a digital Yanmar hour meter, that is inside of the tach. This is specifically for a marine Yanmar 4JH4AE but also applies to other Yanmar Diesels and Volvo Pentas with a VDO LCD screen.
    Update, Since posting this video, at some point the hour meter stopped working again, after inspection I noticed that the LCD screen's ribbon had failed with a crack.
    I ordered a replacement LCD screen for £19.99 from them at www.akspeedo.co...
    They shipped it from the UK to Canada for me, and I was able to install it with no issues in under 30 minutes.

    Thank you Lucas. Your method worked for me also. If you plug it in after your initial cleaning and it doesn't work....go back and clean some more. Eventually your display will come back to life.

    Thanks for sharing your fix. I have a 3JH4E with the exact same panel as you. Losing the display numbers was an intermittent probable for me that got worse to where I lost the numbers permanently last September. I tried your fix and it worked great. Numbers back, nice and distinct but only for a week, then no numbers again. I was wondering if you ran into this or have any idea as to what would make the fix more permanent. I am trying to avoid adding a mechanical meter as there is not much extra room in my panel. Thanks again for your help.

      Hi Dale sorry for the late reply. inspect the ribbon, for cracks or damage. I have seen this issue before, I believe you can purchase a new LCD screen that comes with a ribbon from Akspeedo. You will keep your hours etc, their video and links are here th-cam.com/video/7IpqaKi7hY4/w-d-xo.html

    • @lucasspaniard8430
      @lucasspaniard8430  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Possibly. The other result that happens offten, is that the ribbon is dried out, and cracks. sometimes it is hard to see it. If this happens you need a new LCD screen. (with a ribbon.)

    Lucas, Are the hours stored on the meter or elsewhere? Am a correct that the hours run from the time the display died are or may be gone or will it show total hours. I ask because I am interested in buying a boat that has unkown engine hours due to this meter.

    • @lucasspaniard8430
      @lucasspaniard8430  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey sorry for the late response. The hours are stored on a chip in the motherboard. The total hours will display once the screen is replaced or repaired. I have another video coming out of the LCD replacement. I just need to finish editing it.

    • @threesheetsnw

      Yes. I believe it should be between 5 and 9 volts. Measure on the AC circuit -- as it is unrectified signal from the alternator.

    So we got the tach out, opened it and it had a hard compound around the plug for the LCD. Any advice to remove this? We are original owners so this is from the factory. Separately, we cleaned the dialectic gel, put it back together. Now the tach reads about 1000 RPMs high. GRRRR! Advice please!

      @lucasspaniard8430  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I don't completely follow regarding the hard compound on the plug, where are you referring to? The fix I am suggesting does not effect the RPMS, make sure that the needle is zeroed when off? Maybe you moved it when doing the repair. the needle threads right off and can be removed.

      @@lucasspaniard8430 thanks for the reply! I wish I could attach a picture but imagine where the LCD ribbon connects to the motherboard it has a hard dry joint compound. We also messaged a boat owners group, a couple of folks have followed your method with great success. On other boat owner had the same issue as us where this compound has been used to seal the ribbon and connector to the motherboard. Separately, concerning the tach we did zero it out again and it still behaves the same way, where when engine is on the RPMS read high and then does not zero out when the engine is off

      @@rcraraces5928 sounds like your tach needle is not actually zeroed. If it returned to zero once the engine is off I would suggest you may have another issue. But since it doesn't I will guess that it is not actually zeroed. Should be easy to figure out the amount to move the needle since you know your regular idle rpms and where they are now.
