I am 73 & still love to see the reactions of those who have never seen or heard the music I grew up with, I saw Jethro Tull at many festivals & shows from the Isle of Wight onwards, yes I was out there in that crowd, they were always excellent in whatever form they took. Consummate musicians & performers under the guidance of Ian Anderson a Master in all forms.

When his daughter took up the flute in music school as a teenager, she told her father (Ian Anderson) he was fingering the flute wrong (this was in an Ian Anderson interview). He relearned the flute correctly, and from that point on, Ian always played these songs with the correct way of playing.
But I always thought if he had known the flute more technically when he composed these songs, would they have been as intense as they became? It wouldn't be the first time a novice on an instrument surprised the masters.
Jazz drummer Buddy Rich couldn't read music, neither could The Beatles. Yet, both ascended to greatness.

Essentially the lyrics are saying that there is a God of everything, but that religions have contorted the understanding of God to quit their purposes. Hence he describes how religions have attempted to confine him in a golden vage, but "He is the god of nothing is that's all that you can see,' but goes on to say "He is the God of everything, he's inside you and me."
Whether in a reaction or on your own, it is worth listening to the studio version as well: during the big flute solos, there is a chant similar to Gregorian chant that works very well. I like both versions.

  • @dunringill1747

Jethro Tull is my favorite band. Lead singer Ian Anderson is a self-taught multi-instrumental / song writing genius. Now to really blow your mind, Ian was teaching himself flute for less than 2 years on what you just saw. That in itself is impressive, but also consider how many other instruments he was teaching himself at the time while also writing songs, choreographing concerts, etc. Another year or two and his flute playing goes deep into pioneering flute techniques. Over the years, many professional flute players on TH-cam have been stunned by what they have seen.
I've seen Jethro Tull Live 27 times over 26 concert tours. Anderson takes his concert entertainment performances very seriously. He is the finest live performing frontman in Rock history - Bar None. Anderson brings wit, intelligence, athleticism, theatrics, humor (both dirty and clean), social commentary, and a bit of tongue-in-cheek spice to his concerts.
Tull's musical catalogue is quite intellectual and deep. You won't find many top hits but you will find hidden gem after gem after gem. I can already see you would enjoy exploring both their studio and live music over the years.
For your next Tull song, I highly recommend Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick (live in London 1977) or the live '78 in Madison Square Gardens.

Jesus Christ! Indeed. That was who the song was about.
So happy that you enjoyed the performance. I first heard the song as the last track on Jethro Tull's Aqualung album. I was impressed then and I really enjoyed that live performance now.
Thank you. And keep exploring that old music. As you saw and heard, some of it is really quite good.

My God is not the last track of the Aqualung album - Wind Up is the last track

@@garysexton8840 thank you for reminding me of the folly of not doing even basic research (I own the album). You are right, My God is the first track of side two of the vinyl edition (track 7 of the CD) and Wind Up is indeed the last track.

This song is about how people push God aside for religion. God is inside of individuals, not a building.

    Ian Anderson

  • @dboss7239
    @dboss7239 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

His name is Ian Anderson, and he is indeed multi talented. He plays a half dozen instruments, very well, sings and composes all the songs by the band. He is a modern day master, like a Bach or a Beethoven, mixed in with the lyrical talent of a Shakespeare.. He mixes classical, folk, blues, jazz and rock styles. He often uses a "baroque" feel to some of his compositions. And his stage persona is wild and crazy. But he has delicate moments as well such as this very short, very sweet love song:
    th-cam.com/video/G0vIEOw5flo/w-d-xo.html ( Jethro Tull - Wond'ring Aloud Live At Capital Centre, Landover 1977 (16:9) Full Screen )
And here he is playing one of his hits, 45 years after it came out:
th-cam.com/video/d76pxiPlxHs/w-d-xo.html ( Jethro Tull "Locomotive Breath" (HD - Official) Live at AVO Sessions )
And this is a song from early 1970's done in his home with a string quartet:

Hola. Me suscribí a tu canal por esta reacción. Muchas gracias por reaccionar tan sincera y emotivamente. Ian Anderson es quien toca la flauta y canta (de hecho, es multi instrumentista). My English is very bad, I am chilean (south américa). There is a chilean rapper that you maybe would react, he's name is Chystemc (it's mean something like "JokeMC") and the song is "La Pronoia del Sun Joke Fú". th-cam.com/video/I-1oJnmr6nk/w-d-xo.html here is the link to the official video (with subtitles in English and it's fine). Congratulations.

No - this is not a gospel song, although I can see why you might think it is. It is Ian railing AGAINST organised religion. The guilt, the praying, the lack of individuality - everything. And can we take a minute to appreciate the efficiency of his lungs!

Not a gospel song, but a call for one to examine one's spirituality -- but done with some rude. behavior. :- 0

What a great song, it's anti-religion but pro-God, which is kinda ambiguous because I'm pretty sure Ian is an atheist. I'm a big Tull fan since 1978, but this woman here keeps interrupting the flow which is really annoying. Still I've never seen this song performed live.
