I just wanted to say I understand your thoughts about buying leather and it actually means a lot to have you open up and be so genuine with your feelings about it as not purchasing animal products is something that is important to me too. I purchased one of the covers last year that just had a leather zipper pull and never felt right about it. I love your videos because you're positive while still being honest to you. Thanks it's much appreciated.
I actually really like the MT A6 cover! :) I love the calm, cool colors. The blue shade of the inside is a bit too pale for my taste, but I think I could probably live with it. (I'm getting the Dashenka one, though. And I'm only buying one this year.)
Must admit that there was no cover I absolutely must have, which saddened me a little bit. Hobonichi is usually my big splurge of the year. Having said that, if I had to buy one, it would be the Blink cover only because I will be helping in supporting an animal shelter. That's why I bought the polar bear cover last year and the rhino cover the year before that, and the rhino cover I love! Anyway, I think the bulk of my purchase will be the necessities of the Techo books and the accessories.
Thanks for the detailed video. I had fun watching it. You always see things that I don't such as the unicorn pen. I'm leaning towards the A5 Lotus or A5 Primavera. I'll spend on washi tape and other accessories.
My to buy list: A5 day-free and an A5 notebook in case I run out of space. I like the ocean view better than the lake one, but wrong size, so... maybe I’ll get the lake one. Last year I bought the Alphabet maze, so busy looking, and I love it but this year I want a “calmer” one. I love the combination of black and orange color, so that one is coming to mama. No A6 or Weeks this year for me.
This is my 3rd year buying Hobonichi products. I have to say that after watching the website over the past couple of weeks, I am really disappointed in the covers! I thought I'd find at least one thing but they don't even have matching plain covers for a6/a5. Even the Cover on Covers are disappointing! I guess I will buy my planners and wait patiently for a red pen. ugh. Thanks for walking us through this website; lot of info that I have missed.
Thanks for watching, Becky! They do have a Black x Orange cover in both A6 size and A5 size, but I totally understand that the lineup doesn't appeal to everyone!
and thanks for truly caring about animals i know you are doing your best 🙏🏻💖 re full leather covers... i will never understand how in 2019 some people still purposely pride themselves on choosing to support such an unnecessary, violent, exploitive, selfish and environmentally damaging industry like leather. it doesnt matter where people buy it, or what sort of faux-humane/greenwashing has been used to market it to make people feel better about themselves to buy it, that purchase still perpetuates demand for cruel leather products from everywhere and we are talking about the skin of abused baby animals... who would want that kind of negative karma, and the impact it causes in real life, enveloping their “life book” 😣 i will be writing to hobonichi to ask them to consider maintaining consistency in their values. raising money for animals and then selling products of cruelty made from abused murdered baby animals is not consistent and it’s completely unnecessary. i believe hobonichi will do the right thing in the end ☺️
I think I am just going to purchase the tokio tower weeks, the plain Notebook in A6 and A5. I am also interested in the day free book ☺️ I wasn‘t planning on getting any covers but if I would, I would probably go with the blink cover (because of its good cause und it’s kinda cute) or maybe the dashenka one. That puppy kinda grown on me 🥰
I *need* that Dashinka cover. It's so adorable. Must-buy for me. And I love that it's cotton. I don't avoid leather or animal products - I am a knitter, and I work with wool. My issue is with the use of virgin plastics (made from petroleum) rather than recycled plastics. However...cotton is also not a "clean" industry. As with all big agriculture, it relies heavily on petroleum-based fuels, pesticides, fertilizers, etc. When I buy something made with petroleum products, the visual image that comes to my mind is the almost inevitable extinction of the polar bear, among many other species that climate change has already doomed irrevocably. I'm sorry, I know this is hugely unpleasant to contemplate...but the extinction of a species results from the painful deaths of many individual animals. That said, I have absolutely zero criticism of your choice to avoid animal products. Industrial animal farming - of which the leather industry is one part - contributes heavily to global climate change, and is rife with direct animal cruelty. The sad fact is...here in the 21st century, it's nearly impossible to choose products that check every ethical and environmental "box." I'm not suggesting that we should set our principles aside when choosing which products to buy - exactly the opposite, in fact. I think we have to be mindful of our principles and priorities whenever we make choices about what to buy, use, or consume. It's just that prioritizing one principle almost always means compromising another principle. Perhaps keeping this in mind will help to mitigate some of the guilt that you feel for the small bits of leather on the Po cover you purchased - the proceeds of which also go to help animals. I don't think it's possible to live guilt-free in this era, but I do think that being mindful of these issues can help us to make more careful choices, and to have more meaningful conversations with each other about these choices - and that can only be a good thing, painful as it can be to weigh one priority against another.
That means so much to me, Nádia! Thank you! 🙏🏼 I thought I would definitely be scaring people off with the length of the video. Wilbur and I appreciate your kindness and hugs, and we send you hugs in return!! ❤️🤗🐕🐾
RESPECT - thank you for sharing your outlook on animal friendly products. I am not opposed to buying leather products, however, understanding your view as well as a couple other channels I watch, has me rethinking purchases of leather goods, particularly when their are non-leather options available. If a non-leather option is not available I now even ask myself if I really need the item. As for the new covers, I really like the A5 handkerchief one with the wildflowers on it. I love flowers, my favorite being the dandelion. I have enough covers and each year I vow not to purchase another. Then I fail... 😂 Great job on editing the video, btw.
My favorite flower is the dandelion too!! That's the exact reason I got the Antique Handkerchief Petit Fleur cover last year. And I very much agree with you on the leather subject. I used to be a lot more into the idea of leather (but could never afford it) but now I've kinda gotten away from purchasing any leather whatsoever, especially when alternatives exist. I still purchase wool from time to time though.
Love hearing your opinion on the covers. Look forward to it every year. For myself so far, I like the A6 Ocean View, the A5 MT and the light pink weeks. That could change, we'll see
I feel ya on the leather thing, its always a bummer when i see something i like and realize it has animal products in its materials. I get how some people say "just remove that part" but i dont want to give my money to the demand of that production, you know? Even though u feel guilty for making an exception for the boullion cover, like you said, there were so many other good reasons to get it, and besides, its not like youre out there buying tons of leather with no thought about it. Just being more conscious about these things is important 😊
I'm going with a Cousin in a Lotus cover and an A5 Plain Notebook inside a Bonbon cover. A couple of gray dashboards and that's it. Not sure about the Cover on Cover yet. This will be my first Hobonchi purchase and I'm actually glad nothing caught my eye excessively, otherwise bankruptcy might become a problem.
I'm really "meh" about most of the covers. I am torn if I will go with the A6 or A5 this year in addition to my Weeks... either way I will likely go with the black & orange because I love those colours. For the Weeks I'm likely going with the apple green regular because green is my favourite. I was hoping the A5 non-daily one would have the week view.. that's my #1 used section... but its too small in the A6...
oh i just saw the Weeks portion now. i agree, not many eyecatching covers on there. actually i just received 3 new stunningly beautiful Weeks/Weeks mega (they fit both) trifold covers from thepinkroomco (in canada) in grey, pink, and white with nice champagne gold bow charm clasps and lots of charming scallops she just came out with them in june and they are GORGEOUS with such a beautiful classic aesthetic (and they are vegan leather). the quality is really nice i am super impressed. so far those are the only Weeks covers i have 🤷🏼♀️ i know PrintPression makes beautiful Weeks covers (and fauxWeeks books with a nice white paper) too (also vegan leather and amazing quality). 💖
I'm absolutely with you regarding the leather pieces on the covers! I don't have a no-leather policy but I too look for the materials and ask myself, if I can justify buying it or of there is a better option! If it's a cover I really want, I would get it, but I have to be really blown away by it! I also was surprised that the trifold is faux leather, which is really nice, because I like it very much!
Thank for going into such detail with these videos-it really is helping me in my decision process-that said the only I know for sure that I'm getting is the Blink cover, lots of time to decide!
Hey Chan. I'll get the botanical print weeks for sure with a clear CoC. Also hoping to get some of their stationary items like the kitta washi and stencils. Haha I've been waiting for this video from you ever since the lineup went live 😜
Hi Chan! Thanks for the video! I'm in the market for 2 A5 covers, probably the primavera and maybe the mt or a lotus with a cover on cover if there's a design I love. I so wish Blink the bear came in A5, I would have definitely gotten him! *sigh* Looking forward to seeing the washi tapes too. Love to you and Wilbur! 💕💕
Hi, Katie! 💖 Those are great choices! 📚 That would be so awesome if Blink came in A5, too! 🐻 Hobonichi's preview for August 18th went live a while ago, and they posted a picture of the new mt washi tapes that match the cover designs! Thank you for being so kind to us -- we appreciate you and send love in return! ❤️🤗🐕🐾
This was a great video! Wish it were longer! Seeing these made me want the orange a5 that you liked! I’m also not impressed with the weeks covers lineup:( I really love the primavera cover for a5! Also really liked the washi tape cover! Thanks so much for doing this!
Your hobonichi videos are a joy to watch!! Thank you for posting this reaction to the line up ♡ It truly is a shame that Hobonichi uses animal products in so many of their covers :( And to be honest, this lineup is disappointing. I was looking forward to more covers for the 5 year techo, but they are all the same, including the gift set. Anyway, thanks for the honest reaction!! Hopefully everything you get for next year brings you happiness 🥰
hey you could get your name or something in matching pastel vinyl or something flashier like holo made from etsy and place it in the empty area of the mt pastel tape cover ☺️ it’s all protected with the cover-on-cover too so it will stay in place. i like it as it is tho.
It's going to be so hard for me to choose a Weeks this year! I've narrowed it down to Blue Houndstooth (I love houndstooth), Nojigiku (I love botanical illustrations), and Blue Mix (I love pop art). But now I can't choose one over the others!! And I definitely can't justify buying more than one Weeks... I like the Ocean View, Pastel Mix, and memoria A6 covers, but if I can't decide on one of those it's okay because I still love my Pastel Stripes (Ivory) cover from 2019. Yay! Finally! Love your input on the covers 💕 such a shame that they put unnecessary leather everywhere, my wallet is thankful though! I really wish they'd switch out the leather zipper pulls at least on the mina zip covers. I wanted the soda water last year, and I like the birds this year, but I'll never buy them because of that little unnecessary bit! I am leaning toward the A6 desk garden, because I love the green and pastel pink combo. The manga one is really sweet too, though I have no connection to manga. I'm surprised how much they're doing with Dasenka (cover, cover on covers, hobonichi papers)!
I enjoy buying leather, in fact I love leather so much. But I do respect people who don't purchase it. I think its not about not using things with leather, its about giving money to mass produced leather materials, even if u pull out the leather details u still financed the animal cruelty just by purchasing it. I care about these issues so I always look for the origins of the piece I am buying, and how they treat the people and animals behind the manufacturing of the products thats how I stop buying fast fashion and many other brands, independent of being leather or not, some brands dont really care about the environment or how they treat their employees. ETA: this is a long-winded way of saying that I appreciate you talking about your avoidance of leather and wool - I think it's important to be open about the difficulties and disappointments of making choices and sticking to one's principles.
P.S. I think the best-case scenario is that by talking about these things, we can gradually push "big" and "fast" industries (big-ag, big-pharma, fast-fashion, etc.) to adopt more ethical and environmentally sound practices. In addition to looking at source materials and environmental impacts, the other important factor to consider is how these industries treat their workers.
Well said, Sharon! 👏🏼 I could not have said it better if I tried. Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a thoughtful comment. 🙏🏼 You've given me much to think about. ❤️ P.S. I'm going for the Dashenka cover as well -- so sweet! 💕🐶🐾

Your videos radiate joy ❤️

If you write let me know, I'll join forces with you. :)
I think I am just going to purchase the tokio tower weeks, the plain Notebook in A6 and A5. I would gladly watch two hours of this! Love your videos, Chan! Hugs to you and Wilbur!
That means so much to me, Nádia! Thank you! 🙏🏼 I thought I would definitely be scaring people off with the length of the video. Wilbur and I appreciate your kindness and hugs, and we send you hugs in return!! ❤️🤗🐕🐾

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Thanks for such a thorough review !!!
Thanks for sitting through it, Lisa!! 😄 I appreciate that! 💖🤗
oh i just saw the Weeks portion now. i agree, not many eyecatching covers on there. actually i just received 3 new stunningly beautiful Weeks/Weeks mega (they fit both) trifold covers from thepinkroomco (in canada) in grey, pink, and white with nice champagne gold bow charm clasps and lots of charming scallops she just came out with them in june and they are GORGEOUS with such a beautiful classic aesthetic (and they are vegan leather). the quality is really nice i am super impressed. so far those are the only Weeks covers i have 🤷🏼♀️ i know PrintPression makes beautiful Weeks covers (and fauxWeeks books with a nice white paper) too (also vegan leather and amazing quality). 💖

Thank for going into such detail with these videos-it really is helping me in my decision process-that said the only I know for sure that I'm getting is the Blink cover, lots of time to decide!
I am going to go for the “Blink” cover with the mama and baby 🐻
Great choice, Sandra! 🐻💖🐻
Hey Chan. I'll get the botanical print weeks for sure with a clear CoC. Also hoping to get some of their stationary items like the kitta washi and stencils. Haha I've been waiting for this video from you ever since the lineup went live 😜
Hi Chan! Thanks for the video! I'm in the market for 2 A5 covers, probably the primavera and maybe the mt or a lotus with a cover on cover if there's a design I love. hey you could get your name or something in matching pastel vinyl or something flashier like holo made from etsy and place it in the empty area of the mt pastel tape cover ☺️ it’s all protected with the cover-on-cover too so it will stay in place. i like it as it is tho.
Yay! Finally! Love your input on the covers 💕 such a shame that they put unnecessary leather everywhere, my wallet is thankful though! Will be getting the search and collect cover (I know wool is problematic but it’s my cheese/bacon/what have you) and the green apple weeks. I’m tempted to get the Dashenka A6 cover as well. Initially I wanted the pineapple as well but I think my yellow àne pouch together with the green weeks will satisfy that color combination for me 🤓 love that there’s so much yellow little details, it’s such a happy color.
I really wish they'd switch out the leather zipper pulls at least on the mina zip covers. I'm surprised how much they're doing with Dasenka (cover, cover on covers, hobonichi papers)!
This video was awesome and so helpful. I love the A6 Bear.. but I usually get an A5 and weeks. So much to think about.. happy hobonichi thoughts.

Woodbird A5
Lotus A5
My Manga and I A5
Woodbird A6
MT A5
I love those and i might have to thinner my list by the release but im gonna start saving up now to see if I can get it, in my country I pay 60% tax on the price of the products so, i must think very carefully before I buy something, cause to me its 60% more expensive =(
I think the colors for the A6 MT cover are meh 🙄 and the layout on the A5 MT is yuck ... Considering the MT Weeks, but I’m researching alternative options for the Weeks because I want WHITE paper 😂
I'm as excited as you are about the MT cover, but it's a bit out of my price range :( Plus, I fear it will get dirty very easily by using it daily, in and out of a bag as I do.
Leather is a no deal for me. Only the safari night a5 makes my heart flutter. I love the durability of leather and how it changes but I feel I can smell leather.
Bit of an odd mix and nothing that screams ‘I must have that’ shame.
I *need* that Dashinka cover. It's so adorable. Must-buy for me. And I love that it's cotton. I don't avoid leather or animal products - I am a knitter, and I work with wool. Perhaps keeping this in mind will help to mitigate some of the guilt that you feel for the small bits of leather on the Boullion cover you purchased - the proceeds of which also go to help animals. I don't think it's possible to live guilt-free in this era, but I do think that being mindful of these issues can help us to make more careful choices, and to have more meaningful conversations with each other about these choices - and that can only be a good thing, painful as it can be to weigh one priority against another.
P.S. I'm going for the Dashenka cover as well -- so sweet! 💕🐶🐾
