  • Do you know somebody who doesn't believe that climate change is happening? Most scientists say it is. Rob and Sam get some tips on how to make people think about climate, and teach you new vocabulary along the way.
    ❓❓❓ This week's question:
What percent of the world’s scientific community agree that climate change is real?
    a) 79 percent
    b) 89 percent
    c) 99 percent
Listen to the programme to find out the answer.
    Vocabulary:
✔️ climate denier - person who does not believe that climate change is happening, or does not accept that it is caused by human activity such as burning fossil fuels
✔️ ill-informed - knowing less than you should about a particular topic
    ✔️ full-blown - completely developed or committed
✔️ take a long, hard look (at something) - examine something very carefully in order to improve it for the future
✔️ throw insults - say offensive, hurtful things directly to someone
✔️ backfire - have the opposite effect from the one you intended

For me, a more effective way to fight climate change is not to scare, but to introduce the subject "Ecology, Nature and Protection of the Natural Environment" to schools from the earliest grades.

Hello there! I'm called Hamza and I come from Tangier, a city in Morocco. I am a teacher of English language and I think I can answer your question. The reason why this programme is called 'a six-minute English' is due to the fact that it's a compound noun which normally needs a hyphen right between six and minute.

Not "a" (six-minute English), but without whatever article, though "the" is implied since it determines a specific broadcast.
Not "compound noun", but a "compound adjective" (an English that is six minutes long). And the plural is in the quantifier part (Six) of the adjective. If it was "minutes" it would be a quantifier, implying "of".
Example: "Let's have a/the three [-] minute singing". vs "Let's have three minutes [of] singing".

Climate are changing? Maybe... but both sides have strong arguments about it. Here in Brazil it is a controversal topic and... again, in both side there are many scientists developing studies to solve that issue.

Hi, my friend, with all due respect, over 98% of the scientific community agrees that climate change is real and that it is caused by humans. In 2021, the IPCC's 6th Assessment Report said "it is unequivocal that climate change is caused by human activity", it is no longer "we are very sure" or "it is likely", it is now considered an unequivocal fact, very few things in science get to that standard.
Again, I am not trying to offend anyone, but the facts are that scientists all around the globe, from all cultures, religions, socioeconomic backgrounds and political beliefs agree on that, there is almost no serious research nowadays trying to prove Climate change is fake.
Also, my friend, Brazil will be extremely affected by climate change, not only because of your enormous biodiversity, but because of your social inequity and poverty, I'd advise Brazilians to take care of each other.
      Cheers

In the minds of warmists, this is how co2 controls the climate:
    1. IR radiation, which is the byproduct of SW radiation (light) returns from the atmosphere where it is -18C and reheats the surface (+15C) totally NOT violating the 2nd law of thermodynamics
    2. This returned "back radiation" has 2x the energy than that of the sun's SW radiation, totally NOT violating the 1st law of thermodynamics
    3. IR radiation (light) then continues to fill up the air like water in a reservoir (because light TOTALY does this)
    4. The extra light automatically becomes heat because it's energy and all energy is heat
    5. A photon continues to bounce from surface to atmosphere to surface and we count the same photon as more photons totally NOT violating conservation of energy (LOT 1)
    6. We ignore water vapor even though it is the dominant GHG and focus entirely on CO2
    7. We input our guesses into a computer model and tweak it so we get the appropriate results totally NOT violating the scientific method
    8. We add a hypothetical, unproven guess that feedbacks of co2 (which follow temp) is both cause and effect, TOTALLY not violating logic
    9. We then admit the lapse rate is the mechanism for convective heat to rise but then suggest the surface warms up (just because) ignoring increased surface area of the photosphere as it rises, effectively balancing out
    10. We then call anyone who disagrees with this bullshit, a full-blown climate denier

I can't believe so many people buy into this, here are some facts-
The Northern hemisphere is 33% greener than it was in 1900. Sea levels are rising at the same rate as they were in 1865. The hottest decade on record sine the ending of the "Little Ice Age", was the 1930s into the early 1940s. The earth cooled from from 1940 to 1979 by .3° C.
There was no warming between 1998 and 2015, the Earth has not warmed since 2016. From February 2016 to February 2018, global average temperatures dropped by 0.56° C. The Earth was warmer, there was less sea ice, and the sea levels higher during the "Medieval Warm Period".
2022 Summer Arctic sea extent was greater and the ice thicker, than it was in 2008. Antarctica has been gaining 112 billion tons of ice a year since 1992. Yet according to NASA 2022 was the sixth hottest year on record. There is no mass extinction event occurring due to climate change, the Polar Bear population is five times what it was in 1960,
and at its highest ever recorded.
In 2019 more children died from problems associated with obesity, than from malnutrition or starvation. In 2020 the United States produced 25% more food than it needed or could export. All major crop yields have increased three fold since the 1940s, due in no small part to increased CO2 in the atmosphere. CO2 is a greenhouse gas, however it has never been proven that concentrations of CO2 will cause warming, in fact we know from ice cores that CO2 concentration lags behind periods of rapid warming.
The world population has exploded, however it was expected to top out at nine billion, and then begin decreasing. The reason being that as developing nations become more prosperous, they tend to have less children. By depriving developing nations access to cheap fuel, they are forced to burn wood and dung to cook, light and heat their homes, causing massive health problems, deforestation, and leading to a mass extinction event as they kill local wild life to sustain themselves with protein. Bottom line..... there is no "Climate Crisis"

Climate has changed enormously as you say but were humans on earth when this has happened. The last time ppm hit the figures we have today was 4 million years ago. No humans back then .(ppm is parts per million of co2). Interesting to note that prior to the industrial revolution. The earths ppm was well under 300ppm. It has recently hit over 550 ppm. If that doesn't lower, we are gooshed. Humidity will kill as the body can't cool down. Crops will fail which will lead to starvation. Sea levels will rise (already started) to the figures 4 million years ago (check out a map of what earth looked like 4m years ago. Earth is at a critical stage and cannot continue if nothing is done. On the good news side, we can still do something. Continue at the current rate means todays kids/grandkids will witness the problems. Granted coal is rarely used for heating ( still use it up our way) but the sheer amount of population is not helping, nor are any co'2 releases by 8b people as opposed to 2b people prior to Industrial revolution ( and they burn't wood and coal)

    1. The IPCC is a political body, not a scientific body.
    2. The reason climate alarmists lose almost all debates is that they depend on gas lighting, personal attacks, and appeals to authority.
    3. Why examine the deniers? Why not study the science?
    4. Every study that asserts high agreement among scientists with human caused climate change has been refuted.

I don't think there is any doubt that the global temp has risen 1.5 deg in the last 100 years, or that we have added to that.. The question is, is that significant?. The data used by the IPCC has been seriously questioned many times, along with the integrity of that data as well as their rather unique interpretation of it.
I guess we all have our own take on this, and I respect your position. I don't feel we can all go on as we have been for the last 10 years, It's now come to a critical point where we have a worldwide energy crisis, caused by politicians and ill-thought-out climate policies, which has led to poorer people on the planet unable to afford to heat their houses.. Cold will kill more people than heat. Society needs cheap, affordable energy to exist, and videos like this, which try to scare people don't help. You are pushing out an "opinion" of the BBC and claiming that it is a "fact".., and that is not the case. Having said all of that, what I would like to see is all of this challenged thru the courts. I want to know the facts as much as anyone, and if I'm wrong, then so be it.. We are all going in circles with climate science that is based on "opinions"
The truth cannot be a matter of opinion..

The Earth’s atmosphere contains only 0.035% of carbon dioxide, which is enough for the ‘greenhouse effect’ to sustain our current global temperatures. About 700 million years ago, the evolution of cyanobacteria consumed the CO2 in the atmosphere which turned the entire planet into a giant ice box during the epoch called Snowball Earth. So, if taking carbon dioxide out of the biosphere can do that, what do you suppose doubling the amount will do? Note: At the current rate of CO2 increase, that’ll be in less than fifty years.

There shouldn't be division to begin with
Denying climate change is an active process of barring any logical thinking in the subject and ignoring any evidence thrown at you for the simple purpouse of reinforcing the established claim in your head that " it's all a hoax"

Yes, that what happens in our world. I agree with it. Sometimes people can globally create some problems to our world and future. In our country people cut the forest for their business. I think it's bad decision to do that. We should care about our nature. Because it's our home no matter in which country we were born. Caring about nature is important nowadays. Everyone say that we live in progressive era. I do not agree with it at all. Because in progressive era people wouldn't start a war. I hope everything will be better. See you guys. Thanks
