In the beginning I felt sorry for the owner.....now I'm getting envious.
Are you going to on the side scoops, spin down a nut, then washer then install and second washer and finally a nut with the plastic locking thing so they done vibrate off? The second nut will allow you the ability to tighten them to car well without pulling on the scoop itself too much. Am I making any sense 😂. Keep up the videos. Many of us love them
You've got it!
It's coming around now
Daisy said pay attention to me . Car is looking great. 👌
Always! She is great
When people's eyes bug out when they find out the cost of a paint job (a good one, that is), I need to direct them to this so they can see the labor involved. That Mustang is looking better all the time!
It's definitely a ton of work and people wonder why a driver quality job ends up being 15k+ nowdays
I enjoy every step you take with this Mustang, having watched each episode and appreciate your professionalism in the progress thus far, I can't wait to see it finished. Keep up the good work.
I appreciate that!, thanks for watching the journey with me
It is looking so good, people shouldn't nit pick until you are done, it's highly doubtful you are going to skip any little details. Having watched the full build...I have faith!
Fingers crossed!
Back in hi school I had a 66 coupe I had it painted Wimbelton, White with the Shelby stripes blue loved that car
Very cool 😎
Looks good with the hood and scoops
I like it!
Excellent 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
You have the skill, I would cut out and weld the scoop to the hood, I'm definitely not a Mustang fan but I've watched since the beginning and can't wait to see the finished product!, that car has come a long way!
OTOH, welding complicates any future works in progress.
Probably what I'll end up doing, hopefully it won't be too long we will see some paint
Watching these videos is like watching a favorite tv series. A fantastic entertainment and educational experience, but sad to think it's going to come to an end one day. Hopefully you have another project planned to continue to share your expertise with us. Good luck at the No Name Nationals!
Glad you like them! There will be more videos to come
I never had the love for coupes, but I like the Shelby Theme.
Understandable there
It's POINTING in the right direction now.
Finally starting to!
Like I said, this guy better remember you for the rest of his life.
Hopefully
Lookin good Russ cheers 🥂 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
🔥
It is definitely looking clean now. And probably more fun part coming. I like the look you are going for. Turning it from a craptastic shoved together auction queen to this. I do appreciate the show of all the sanding prep (resand .. repeat). Something to tap as reference in the coming future projects for what I am in for lol.
Hopefully in the coming weeks we will be moving forward at a faster pace! I'm ready to see some color
What an incredibly lucky person the customer/owner of this car is to have met you. Carry on the good fight.
Thanks Paul , your project is looking good too
Gonna be so nice! 😊
I hope so!
Is the client close ? If my car, I’d be there helping you, buying lunch and refreshments, being the “scrap boy”, cleaning up, vacuuming, sanding, taping, prepping, etc, running to the parts store for any missing items (sandpaper, brushes, belts, etc). Anything to make the job easier for you, whether or not it reduced the cost of the job. I’m in my 50s, my back pays dearly for anything physical, and I only do basic stuff on my Wranglers (oil, trans, brakes, diffs, Xfer case, ball joints, tie rods, etc) and the pain it causes. Could not imagine full time as you do, I would be in traction.
That would be helpful.
It's definitely rough on the body for certain
Looking good. I like your idea on mounting the side scoops.
@@tint661 thank you
It’s looking good.
Thanks
neat solution on the side scoops
To me seemed like the most reasonable way to mount them
With your high level of expertise, I would definitely weld and mold the scoop to the hood. Great video! TMD
Definitely going that direction
I’ve had good luck with SpeedoKote Epoxy, very economical, quick drying and fast shipping. For restoration work SPI is fantastic, however it’s expensive and it requires overnight to cure. I have little patience to deal with supply stores.
I picked up some more epoxy yesterday from summit (which used to be relabeled spi) while I was there
YEP,,we be HERE
Thanks for the visit Gene
Russ, I know it’s a moot point now, but when I was working on my 66 coupe way back. My thoughts were to reinforce the mounting tab perimeter of the Shelby scoops, tape them into position, drill through quarters and dimple the scoop. Then I was going to carefully finish drilling through the perimeter tab, panel bond on some 10-24 nuts and screw then on to the car from inside where the quarter window sits. It was a bit tight but doable.
I think what you got will also work just fine. The last thing I would recommend is for the driver headlight bezel. Instead of bondo to bridge the gap, use all metal. Reason being, once the bezel comes on and off a couple of times, the bondo in the edge with chip off.
Lastly, I would suggest welding the scoop to the hood and make it look like a real Shelby hood. Bolt on looks tacky. JMHO.
The car is looking phenomenal! You truly are a master craftsman and I hope your dad is proud!
Good ideas actually where I was going with the side scoops but the gel coat on these was super brittle vs the bumper delete literally can't drill them without it cracking off , Im probably going to end up molding the hood scoop in
Giving it that awesome Shelby look will really make that car . I recently watched some racing drivers compare a 65 Shelby with a 69 trans-am mustang, they both enjoyed the 65 and it’s hot 289 for pure thrill , to me they both looked and sounded better than anything else on track.
I totally agree!
I think welding the hood scoop on would make for a cleaner look , but the old girl is going to be pretty sweet when done 👍👍👍
That's probably where I'm headed with it
Man looking good brother!
Much appreciated
Nice work
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey brother, starting to look really good. I think that I would plug weld and mold the scoop, it’s going to be a sharp mustang. I enjoy watching you work.
That's probably what will end up happening at this point
I really like the visual, the car has come a long way from where it was. Also, I don't know if the owner has made a decision about the color, but I like the original gold. I had a friend that had a car just like this one and it was gold, nice car.
Going to go white with red stripes as the plan (his interior is red and white)
On the hood scoop, it would be great to have nut serts in the hood and then use stainless allen button screws. I did this to hold the hood hinge hoop on a Cobra kit and it looked great plus if I did ever have to adjust it, I could loosen them and adjust it. The OEM way Shelby did it was with simple rivets if you want to make it look OEM.
I think so too
All your videos are exciting 😊
Glad you like them!
Get that mach 1 I mean torino rocken lol 😊
🔊
It shows how long it takes to get it really nice like that.
Absolutely
You made this car pretty nice. If you are going for the clean effect you would have to cut the hood scoop flange off,cut the hole in the hood and weld it to the hood a lot of welding (look like a fiberglass hood with hood scoop molded to it)some people put filler on it the flange for the clean effect but it cracks. You could just put epoxy primer on and hood paint so it won’t rust it will look good just bolted down. Give the owner the options. I would like it welded down and the clean effect myself. (More welding though)
I'm going to end up welding it in he wants it smooth. I kind of dig the mechanical look myself
If you ask me, I would say mold on that GT 350 hood scoop so that it looks like the Shelbys back in the day and not like the AC Cobras which were bolted on
We are going to mold it in, I kinda like the cobra look myself
I like scoops molded in. It would up to the owner.
Absolutely several ways to possibly go !
Man,once your finished with this want to put a fllorpan and lower quarter patches in our 65 Dart GT hardtop 273?It's a worthy car saved it out of the North Carolina swamps after 23 years,ex shine runner. Its mechanically solid,my daily driver and looks great in its patina but needs these things. Thanks HRGG.
Possibly, depends on how things go
I think the hood scoop would look good bolted to hood, but washing the car by hand might be kind of a hassle? Using round stainless steel hexagon socket type bolts with the smooth perimeter head might look good. I noticed that the gap between the hood scoop to hood was less than than the side scoop to body gap. Not a deal breaker however, because it still looks good. 😎 Another interesting video! Thanks!
Quiet possible, I like it bolted down but I believe he wants to mold it in the hood so we will see how it goes 😉
It's a shame he didn't pick the route of fully putting it back to factory spec with that gold paint and a vinyle top ! But considering the state this poor thing was in it's probably not worth the effort. Great work as usual
I thought I was the only one with that vision for the car!
I'd say if his interior wasn't red and white it would had probably ended up that direction for sure
@@HotRodGuyGarage Oh yeah I forgot about this, I'm guessing it's not original to this car?
@@ulrich_badmecanique definitely not, but it did have nice nice upholstery
@@HotRodGuyGarage That's at least one thing you don't have to worry about!
Looking good
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice guy, excellent work, rapidly turning into a tarts handbag now 😂
Thank you! Cheers!
Some stainless cap head screws would look good for the scoop but it would really depend on what rims he is going with. I would need to see that in the mock up.
It needs some wide torque thrust D's
A little touch of rugged aggression might be sort of cool especially if the stainless cap screws played visually off chrome lugnuts on black black rim webbing.
I like the 65-66 in a coupe. The fastback looks wonky to me until 67. Kinda like the early Cuda.
I'm not certain, wouldn't the the GT350 have had a fiberglass hood? The scoop would have been molded. If they kept the factory hood it would have been bolt on. I have no preference either way. Bolted in primer looks good, but bright shiny white might look better smooth.
She's lookin pretty sexy now! 👍
From what I read there were some steel hoods early on. But maybe incorrect this was just a cheap option over buying a fiberglass hood
The car looks amazing! I would want the hood scoop welded and finished to the hood. The bolt on look isn't consistent with any other features of the car. If you had a bolt on trunk lid spoiler then it would at least match something else, not that I'm suggesting that it needs a spoiler.
We are going to end up molding the hood scoop in. A little duck tail spoiler would help balance the rear out some
That sounds good.
Too late for this, but it would really look badass with a Shelby style back panel with the elongated Shelby tail lights.
I really like the stock tails the large t bird tails didn't come around till 67
I'd defiantly mold the hood scope in if it was my car. Overall, the car is coming out good.
Definitely what we are going to end up doing
Kinda hard to work on anything else as long as this has tied up your shop space. Maybe the end is coming in sight. Thx!!!
Absolutely so, limited me to small jobs
Nutserts and a stainless button head Allen bolt would be a good way to mount the scoop in my never to be humble opinion
I agree with that, but he wants it molded in
Now all you need is a 289 hypo under the hood.
How did you know where to put the hood scoop? I would of spent too much time just trying to center it etc. Just eyeball it? Without the carb there it must of been tricky. Great job btw
It's got a ridge that matches the hood then eyeball it up 😁
Yep
Body work takes time and can be tedious work.
Been workin on my 06 Monte SS..rockers..
Woo Hoo...what brand of mustard you using to skim coat?🤣🤣🤣
Take care
Stay safe

👍 Thanks!
I used to ride around in these when I was a kid, then
later as I got older, rebuild um.
Are you going to use the rear lights or Shelby lights?
You’ve probably heard of the Hertz “Rent-A-Racer”.
People would rent them yank the motor and replace
it with their 289. We never did it. My Pop would’ve
killed me..
I'm going to use the stock lights
To nice to god f..king professionel
I believe those bolts in the side scoop will break loose without some fiberglass mat... PLEASE don't paint the rear bumper... that will look like hades....
@@jdrake8738 there's 2 layers of mat with the stud/bolts
Cut the hood, mount the scoop from the bottom and mold in the edges?
Possibly
Craig from Lees Summit, Mo……so why did the bumper not fit better? Was it that misbuilt or did you change the dimensions that much with the rear end bodywork? I can’t imagine a repop bumper being that far off. Also, are you going to have the bumper rechromed or are you painting it like the front?
I have no clue about the bumper or it's origins other then it is super thin and a repop . It's going to be painted at this point
@@HotRodGuyGarage that bumper was horrible! Was cool that you cut it and shortened it to fit.
@@angielover100 it definitely was
I was always taught that filler over primer/sealer was a bad idea, is that no longer the case ?
@@jdrake8738 same here, but over Epoxy is supposed to be ideal now
@@HotRodGuyGarage hmmmm... interesting....
Good luck at the no name nationals!
I'm still fighting along, should be another torino video Monday
Don't non-functional scoops create more drag ? So you're essentially messing up aerodynamics for looks.
If the owner likes it then that's good but personally I'm not a fan of 'performance add ons' that actually hurt performance, even if it's only by a little bit.
They can, the reality is this car may never see conditions where aerodynamics come into play, I may actually block the side scoops. The hood scoop will be turned functional
