Lovely to see, thank you for posting. My father taught me how to marble on paper nearly seventy years ago just using the water bath and some old oil paint he had left over from various jobs. We practised on old newspapers first, then used brown paper bags from the greengrocer, then when I became accomplished with that, some wallpaper lining paper that he cut into smaller sheets for me. I still remember how amazed I was at the results! All the best to you and your family, both in art and in life!
30-40 years ago I finely grated colored chalks onto a tub of water, and laid paper on top to pick up the chalk. I don’t remember if I sealed the paper with anything or not, but if I did it would have been hair spray. Last year I was looking through stuff for junk journaling and found some of the marbled paper, beautiful as ever.
I researched suminagashi and ebru art for my art students and it was a hit! For ebru art or Turkish marbling on a budget, I used liquid startch from walmart for 3 bucks, to replace the carrageenan or ox gall. It thickens the water well. Mixed it with warm water (try 1:1,you will have you experiment with the ratio) and placed it in a shallow cooking pan. (The metal cookie sheets from the dollar store are great). I used semi watered down acrylic ink and used a fanned out brush to splatter the paint onto the surface of the water. I just used a paint pad from the dollar store and got really beautiful results. Instead of scooping it up, I did rest the paper on the surface of the water for a few seconds and then lifted it. To make the combs to pull through the paint on the surface,I used tooth picks and stuck them in cardboard strips. Drag them in different directions to create various patterns! Suminagashi (japanese paper marbling) works best with the actual boku undo ink and rice paper from amazon. Cooler water, still use the shallow pan. Try it out. I was obsessed for quite some time. Made some really awesome prints.

This is the first time i've seen marbling done with oil based colors, thanks for that, it looks amazing and the presentation is awesome :-D
You can do suminagashi marbling with cheap water soluble acrylics. Add some water (and a drop of dish soap if it doesn't spread) and then dip a brush into the color and immerse just the very tip of the brush into the water. Alternate with another color or with a brush that only has water + dishsoap on it. The result is more transparent than with your technique. The more circles the darker it will be.

Awesome. I will have to try it. I've done traditional marbling. Ox gall is made from the ox gall plant and it helps disperse the inks across the surface of the water. No oxen were harmed in the making of the ox gall! Annemarie Ridderhof does traditional style marbling and has a really cool video to explain how to do it as well as the Japanese version, Sumigashi. There are several different methods, like floating the paint on shaving cream. Also, you can use the same acrylic paint you use for pouring to do paper marbling. It is a lot of fun. I think that's why I really like doing the acrylic pouring on canvas, it looks a lot like free form marbling. Looks like you were having a lot of fun!

This is fun. I will try using the resin tints. We have always used Bokuundo Marbling Kits. The kids can do it and it is inexpensive. This will be a new and fun way to marble paper. Thank you

Hi, try mixing up a wallpaper paste(fairly loose, it tightens up quickly) then use your same container...your inks will stay put with whatever designs you create. Then tip your paper the traditional way!

Dunno if you've been told already, but you can also use almond milk (the Silk brand works excellently) as your "sizing," and regular acrylic paint, watered down just a bit. You need to pre-treat the paper with alum dissolved in water, first, then let it dry. And then apply it down flat on top of your colors, in the traditional method. And you can get gorgeous results, even using regular copy method.

I use shaving cream to hold the colors and lay the paper on top, comes out great and you can do it a few times and get totally different results.

Great video, super simple technique! (no ox gall!) Do you wash off the prints after they have been dyed? I see ink floating about on the finished ones. Also, do you fix it in any way?

I remember doing this 60 years ago at school using 'Airfix' model enamel paints - we got in a right old mess, the only thing that didn't get paint on it was the paper.

Hi, what is the resulting quality of the paper after marbling. Can it be painted over easily? As in, could i use acrylics over the top or is it now too oily to respond to water based products?

Seems like once the paper is dried, the tint keeps coming off onto my hands. Maybe I haven't let it dry long enough before handling? Or will it always be like this?

That sounds cool! I don't think this product would work for hard objects because it needs something absorbent. I'll have to experiment though!

This is amazing! I did a paper marbling workshop in my town and fell in love with this but the cost! Question though, if both sides get ink what is the best way you’ve found to dry the pages? Does a drying rack ruin one of the sides?

What is the ink set you used,look very good.
wow thanks so much. Will the oil in the pigment yellow or disintegrate the paper over time?
The presenters are using craft-grade oil-based pigments (paints? colors?) -- so the oil should eventually dry, either by evaporation or -- like boiled linseed -- by oxidation. Put the marbled paper someplace warm and mostly dust-free, to encourage this. May take a week or two, tho :-)
The pigment colors are generally much 'stronger' than any color from the oil, so you shouldn't need to worry about the oil yellowing (and the oil won't yellow much...).
Oil won't cause paper to disintegrate ("wrapping in wax paper" is a common way to protect foodstuffs, engineering components, etc.; and wax is just oil, but stiffer :-)
You might, however, be careful to keep your finished item out of direct sunlight; because a few years of direct sunlight may cause the pigments to fade, and / or the paper to decay.
Is epoxy resin colorant the right thing?

This is very cool. Sort of like the Marabu Easy Marbling product but glitzier. I would think you could use any absorbent paper also, like Arches 88 or BFK Rives. I'm going to try your technique although I think the inks are very pricey. The cheapest technique is Suminagashi.

I tried your technique and really liked it. I used some tape to block off areas - sort of worked. My yellow tint dispersed throughout the water so everything came our yellowish. Bought the tints you used but my bottles are different. I have photos but don't know how to attach them here.. Thank you
I got mine when they were first released, I think they've changed the packaging a bit. I do find that some of the colors disperse more than others.
What kind of other colors can we use, if you don’t have this brand?
I love that this method dyes both sides of the paper! How do you dry them with a double-sided design, just a line and some clips? Do you rinse the paper after dipping it or just let the extra dye drip off?
I actually lie them flat. It doesn't disturb the design on the back but it will leave a mark on your floor

Hi Josie, I've been looking to purchase the oil resin tints that u use 4 marveling, can I ask what brand u bought that was cost efficient?
I've only ever used the Art Resin brand!
One last question- I ordered Metalics + Pearls Art Resin. I noticed that the paint is dry but metallics smear. Should I use a clear finishing spray? I used water color paper. Came out beautiful!
I find that all the colors stay a little sticky if they are on there too heavy. I've never tried to spray them but that could work! Let me know what you find!

My kids and I have made marble paper with shaving cream and food color and/or acrylic paint. It is so addictive.
I wonder how your paper dries so flat though. Mine maintains some curl to it even though I press it between books once the color won't smudge anymore.
I think it helps to work with heavier weight paper.

Hi, thank you for the amazing technique I tried it in my after school arts class, and it worked amazingly, the kids loved it, but the only problem was that it never completely dries, if you rub a finger on it it smears the tint. Did this also happen to you?
I forgot to mention that this is after 3 weeks of it being on the drying rack.
It depends on the absorbancy of the paper and also how thick the ink blobs are. But yes, this has happened to me. Glad you had fun trying it!
Thanks for the reply! It seemed to have dried now after 4 weeks. I'll try some thicker paper next time:) Or try to dry it with a blow dryer too.
