At 11:21 you hear a Chrysler engine turning over, not a GM. Those old Chrysler starters had a unique sound and you couldn't mistake them for anything else and back in the day this was THE default engine starting sound they used in every movie regardless of the type of car it was for.

Gear reduction starters sounded like that back then. Tilton was the main aftermarket starter then. Used mainly on really high compression engines.

A Friend of mine had a 69 GTO JUDGE Carousel Red with the stripes and lettering (the word JUDGE on the fender) with the 400 cid motor Ram air IV it had a knob under the dash to open and close the hood scoops, 4 speed , posi trac Hood mounted Tach, everything. He claimed it had a 4:11 gear in it but I never did believe that because the car had too much top end speed for that low of a gear. Anyway it was a nice car and it ran good and sounded good to be stock, it came from the factory with a bigger CAM than the ram air III or the reg. 400 cid.

They stole the idea for the Supercharger on/off switch from Mad Max, and that's not how Superchargers work... Or sound. But still cool.

    • @owenrobertson
      @owenrobertson 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I love this movie, it came out in '85, when I was 15. You could have a switch operated blower in 1985, but it would be tricky, and you'd need a lot more money than the character in this movie has. You could even make the whole switch operated set up look identical, and as clean as this GTO's engine looks. Like you suggested, this car's engine is a movie prop, with a simple electric motor to drive the blower belt, and just like in Mad Max, that blower is looks only, and absolutely non functional. To make it work, you'd need a clutch type pulley, like an A/C compressor pulley, on the crank. Probably not an A/C compressor pulley from an old Pontiac, though...to drive that big Roots style blower, you'd want that same 12v clutch style engineering in stouter form, something industrial maybe. That way the crank's v belt pulley would still spin the water pump and alternator, but the crank's blower pulley would freewheel until you hit the batman switch in the dash. Energized, the clutch pulley would engage, and would only then drive the blower belt. You could also have the crank blower pulley fixed, and have the electrically activated clutch pulley on the blower itself, but then the blower belt would always be in motion while the engine is running and in the movie, we can see the the belt is stationary while he's driving in the high school parking lot. For accuracy, the freewheeling would have to be down below, on the crank pulley. Now there aren't carburetors on top of that blower...same with Mad Max, and there are no visible external fuel injection lines going into that GTO's blower manifold. This means that you have to hide all of your direct port, mechanical fuel injection plumbing under the blower manifold, but that's not a problem. The tricky part is that you need to be able to deliver airflow to the intake ports when the batman switch is off, and the blower rotors are stationary. Stationary rotors would block airflow from the scoop to the intake ports, due to their tight clearances. Opening up those clearances would defeat the purpose of the blower. So, the only option is to hide a smaller blower inside this GTO's GMC 6-71 blower housing, or build a custom 6-71 style blower housing, that's a couple inches wider, and has secondary airflow that goes around the rotor housing to the intake ports in the blower manifold...either way there needs to be a valve that is normally open, and electrically closed, this air valve would allow airflow from the scoop into the external intake runners, while the dash switch is off. When the batman switch engages the blower, by engaging the clutch pulley, it would also have to close the valve to shut off that external air ducting that you added. Lastly, you'd want that batman switch to energize a third feature, which would be a secondary set of mechanical fuel injectors, as the blower creates boost, the additional airflow will lean the air/fuel ratio enough to blow holes into pistons...so a lot more fuel is needed. Computer controlled fuel injection would be ideal, but I'm trying to keep things 1985 here. All that on an engine with forged pistons, an 8.5:1 compression ratio, and a drive pulley that delivers 7 or 8 pounds of boost, should run just fine, regardless of whether the blower is on or off. Could you do it? Yes. Is it worth it? No...but if you've got tons of money, why not, it would be one hell of a science project. More of an engineering project, I guess.

I have to give this movie credit, they used a REAL PMD engine.
Yea, they borrowed the idea, but the "idea" isn't new, just be glad they didn't put the 2-Speed rear axle shifter in like Max did.
On another note, MAD MAX used a Pontiac motor for the shot in the garage. Funny to think the 2 most renowned fake blowers were on top of Pontiac engines :/

I am a Poncho fan, like the 62 Catalina with the 421 SD mill, and the 67 Bonneville 2+2,,, but at the end of the Flick, when 'Dennis' and his sweety stall out on the roadway,,,,, THAT soundbyte of the starter cranking,,,, that is hands down, a Mopar starter soundbyte.
Sorry Guys,,,, love those big Poncho valve covers,,, but even ZZ Top used a Mopar gear reduction starter soundbyte in their song 'Manic Mechanic'.
      There's no mistaking that sound.

It is completely possible to create a clutched supercharger that can be switched on and off... The Toyota Previa had one. However, this one is bullshit.

Nah thats pretty pathetic, particularly considering the car was supposed to be built to the hilt. WTF kind of gears was he running to be doing 7000rpm at 85mph....like 5.13? And knowing that, he must have been turning nearly 10k RPM to have hit 120. Meanwhile, the motor sounded like it was running at MAYBE 5500 tops. Its good it was all fake...gears like that, the moment he let off the gas at that speed, the car would have spun and rolled. Movie would have ended with 3 dead kids not seeing the end of the world.
Then at the end with the mopar starter dubbed in.....WTF?
I loved this movie as a kid (amd still do) but even then the continuity and car related errors drove me nuts.
BTW my first car was a 1984 Nissan Pulsar complete with the ground pounding 69hp E16 2bbl motor. That car had less trouble hitting 100mph than this movie car did.
My 2nd car was a 1972 Buick skylark, which was the same length, width, wheelbase, height, wheel track, and weight as this 69 goat. Was the stock 350 Buick 2bbl carb motor (rated at 150 net hp), the sole mod was a dual exhaust.
It had absolutely no problem reaching 120mph.....the 2.56 gears helped with that.
The actual cars uses I believe were stock LeMans cars some of which were inline six base models...those i could see having trouble doing 90.

It's Hollywood, like first Fast and Furious movie, and that wheel hanging Charger. They used a hydraulic ram to raise the front end, while the rear tires are breaking traction no less, so that's silly. Why not just find a car at the drag strip that really lifts the front end? I like the switched blower idea, though. Saw it in Mad Max when that movie first came out, saw it in this movie, when it came out. I knew it was fake, but I asked myself how it could be done. It could absolutely be done, as I stated in a response above. It's a fun idea that I've given a lot of thought to.
