There was the archon war, plus Zhongli was a menace back then and Venti knew him, then Khaenri'ah, and the fact that the abyss monsters are the people of khaenri'ah and the people of teyvat kill them. Plus, slavery exists, and almost every character has a cruel backstory (even npc's). I think it was just a mistake on the creator's part.
