    Geia!! I have a question! I am still very new to learning Greek but I love it and my only resolution this year is to better my Greek skills. My question is, in the US, we'll say "twenty twenty-four" usually instead of "two thousand twenty four". Can you say it that way in Greek? "Είκοσι είκοσι τέσσερα"? Or would you always say it "δύο χιλιάδες είκοσι τέσσερα"?
    I just downloaded the Greek keyboard on my phone yesterday to try to help get used to writing it, which I think will help me read it better and faster, and that will help me speak it better. I have a long way to go but I'm hoping to be at least conversational this year!! ❤ Καλή χρονιά!!

    • @panoc3277
      @panoc3277 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We always say "δύο χιλιάδες είκοσι τέσσερα", (two thousand twenty four). There is not digit grouping in numbering in Greek when we speak for counting things. We use it for telling a phone number or a code but never for counting.

      That always happens in countries that assume nobody bothers to learn their "difficult" language. They learn a more common language, usually English, to talk to foreigners. Which they'll then switch to out of politeness and that tends to become an automatic habit.
      We do the same in the Netherlands, much to the annoyance of every foreigner that does want to learn Dutch. Although we'll often switch to German and French too. Because we're surrounded by 3 neighbours that historically insisted that theirs was the one true language and we liked trading with all of them. xD
      Also it's helpful to remember that while you are learning Greek, talking to you offers them an opportunity to practice their English in real life. So it tends to become a language exchange. But you can always ask them to switch to native settings.

    • @pacobajito85
      @pacobajito85 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CitizenMio thanks for your answer. This must partly be a cultural habit: in Italy we love foreigners who speak Italian, no one would ever switch to English if not necessary. I also believe that the hurry (eg in restaurants) must play a role in using English as a lingua franca.

    • @CitizenMio
      @CitizenMio ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pacobajito85 Hehe, yeah it definitely is cultural and pretty noticeable in Italy. ;) It also kinda ties in with how a country sees itself and how it expresses its national pride. Some favour a bit of humility towards visitors more as a sign of politeness. We'd absolutely expect you to learn Dutch if you moved here, but not when just a guest. We'd still be pleasantly surprised if you tried. Pretty laid back about new learners butchering it too.
      The general attitude to other languages is the most significant part I think. France and Germany for instance dub all movies and tv shows. There's nothing quite like Morgan Freeman's voice getting kicked to the background so that one German guy can talk over him.
      Until the global obsession with social media, this did slow down language learning in those countries. Not sure how that is done in Italy, I only know that English in the heart of Rome wasn't that great even in restaurants.
      Not that I mind, it's part of the charm of different countries and I happen to be working on learning some Italian as well. We managed just fine and I guess all of us learned something, so that's great.
      As for English in Greece, the (bigger) islands do emphasize learning it because tourism is such a big deal for them and that has always been our experience as well. I hear it's different on the mainland, but we've only ever been on one small tour there so.

      @@CitizenMio I totally agree. In Italy too we dub the movies 😀and English is generally poorly spoken in comparison to Greece😀 (by the way, many Greeks can also speak Italian)
