I appreciate the breakdown on how mercury is mined. Crazy how as a kid we would play with it in elementary school class with the teacher present, LOL.

Bless their hearts for being aware. I do recall we weren't allowed to touch it; we just got to look at it roll around on a dish while the teacher used a utensil to divide it and push it around. It was impressive and unlike anything back in those days.
In 2016 I saw a daytime meteor in Eastern Washington, it looked as though it was at 1000 ft passing me as I drove a dirt road. It was stunning. I could only explain that the entire meteor looked like a perfect ball and tail of pure mercury. Based on having seen mercury in my youth. Turns out the meteor was much higher and seen simultaneously by towns 100 miles north of me. What a thrill. I would have sworn it was just passing me at 1000 ft and going to end up in the nearby resevoir.
We kept Mercury from a busted thermometer In a pill bottle to play with. And of course we'd melt down lead toy soldiers and re-cast them in molds over and over again.
Been watching and subscribed since the beginning of the minivan days.
I say YES to the truck with a flatbed and custom built home. Would bring the channel to the next level.

The kiln you were looking at is called a "Multiple Hearth Furnace", it uses rabble arms on each of the furnace hearth's to spread out the material on the hearth and then essentially plow it to an opening in the hearth and drop it to the hearth below. The large gear that was on the bottom of the furnace is driven by an electric motor which turns the center shaft to move the rabble arms. The centrifugal fan (blower) underneath was the shaft cooling fan. Your video showed some of the burners on the side of the furnace, these looked to be light oil burners (diesel fuel, No. 2 fuel oil), the air pipe to each of the burners looked to be about 2" pipe size so that would generally make each burner rated about 450,000 BTU/Hr, about 2.5 to 3 gallons of oil per hour...... your little diesel heater is probably less than 1/10 of that capacity. You can Google multiple hearth furnace and you'll get a better idea on how these work. My guess that furnace was built by Bartlett Snow Co., they were a popular industrial furnace engineering company in the western states in the 50's through to the 80's..... good video, brings back memories.

A truck camper is a sweet idea. I’m sure you‘ve watched Timmy of Truck House Life! He takes his trucks through real extremes like 4x4 trails in Utah. Definitely should take his build as a blueprint, it seems perfect.
Life long Oregonian (67 years) and I've lived all over the state and was unaware if this mining area. Thank to you and Rocko for showing this.

Mercury mines are to be avoided. My dad worked at a very crude version in Oregon (early 1940's) and many of the workers were always ill from the fumes created from heating the cinnabar. Those were desperate times and a job was a job. Thanks for the video.
you are ok you just dont want to breath it in when heated up and you can handle the rock just wash your hands off when done.
I agree ,West of Takla lake in northern B.C. there was a mine put in for WW2 ,the mercury was used in bomb fuses. That area around the smelter was one of the most spookiest places I've ever been to, the settling ponds were the darkest green ,the trees were stunted, no sights or sounds of birds or any other wildlife other then pack rats and mice. They used wood to fire the smelter. Oh ya ,another great vid .
Another great episode. It never ceases to amaze me that these industrial businesses were able to close up shop and just leave everything behind back in the day. These days most huge industrial sites are regulated to have to return the area to 'greenfield' state when they are shutting down. We need the mining and industry to keep us going so no worry with that, but glad that at least we are getting close to the point where industry behaves as campers should, ie leave your site exactly as it was when you arrived. As always, safe travels.
RE: New rig. Can't decide if I want my next rig to be a Tacoma with a camper insert (fully insulated for winter), or just go all out for a Ford Transit Trail. I only spend 2-3 weeks at a time in my current minivan, so I think I could go the Taco route...but if I lived in it, and wanted to spend time in the winter up north...full sized van 100%. Transit Trail with upgrades is pricey though. Hopefully with your viewer ship that is financially possible. Thanks for another great video.

When I was a kid, we used to rub pennies with mercury to turn them silver. Then we’d try to pass them off as dimes. Hardly ever worked but kids will be kids!
Good work Simon. I realised while watching this just how much I appreciate your attention to smaller details. Especially for an older mine like that you paint a nice picture of what it was. I mostly say this because I recently watched an urban exploring video of a totally untouched prairie farm house and was flabbergasted by the uploader glossing over almost everything and not having a good understanding of the place he was in. Makes me grateful for you!

One occasion, in particular, we drove and drove, and drove on a two track for a very long time, and many many miles finally backing into a spot in the middle of nowhere. We got up in the morning and wondered what was in the area. Later we decided to drive a little further, but as it turns out, half mile away, there was a large campground, and then a major road. We also thought we were in the middle of nowhere.😂

Mercurochrome was a great antiseptic, red in color,
that i used to use for cuts and scrapes. It worked good. Little bottle with a glass rod applicator.
(A truck deck camper can be heavy with not much floor length. Maybe a bit more fuel consumption.)

It’s amazing how intact that building is. The lumber is still solid. My home and garage were built in the 40’s and some of the wood structures such as deck railings and the garage that looks like a barn have rotting wood and rusting to dust metal. A lot of maintenance this spring yet that place is frozen in time.

You were right to be concerned about contamination. I was there in the 90's early aughts when they were doing a clean-up at the site and it was abundantly clear from observing them that the clean-up effort was haphazard at best.
Love the history you provide when visiting these abandoned places.

Forresty! I’m in Oregon camping on the beach! You should come up to Warrenton and check out Sunset Beach for a day or two!!
During covid I spent about 7 weeks In Warrenton state park / rV park.
On an early am walk through the park my dog and I came face to face with a Wolf.
Was scary af, wolf showed his teeth ran at me. Then saw my Pit Bull and the Wolf made a hard left into the woods.
Lots of Elk n Deer in that park.
Wow! I’ve seen tons of elk and quite a few deer but I didn’t even think about there being wolves in the area! I love this area I’ve been here all winter lol (snow birding from Alaska)

There's only ONE thing better than BACON, that's more BACON. lol I like making candied BACON in my smoker, using thick slices with a variety of smoking chips available. My Wife likes Cherry or Peach smoked, dipped in Milk Chocolate. I like mine with any smoke, dipped in Pancake batter, fried and drizzled with Honey. Just regular smoked BACON is great, too. I like to make Grilled Cheese BACON Waffles with it. Just as it sounds, it's a grilled cheese with smoked BACON in it, but made on a Waffle Iron. Sounds odd, tastes GREAT!! lol The way I make them, ONE is rather filling, for the average person. lol👍
Mercury was also the most used treatment for syphilis. It actually slowed the progression of the disease but killed the patient in the process.
So, it sort of cured the syphilis but the cure was as bad as the disease.

I remember being given a small amount of mercury in a test tube at school. I was probably 8 or 9 yrs old. All my classmates got one to play with the whole afternoon. Ah, the good old 60's and 70's when "nothing" could kill you. Great video.
