This actually did change how I see Reiner. I never really looked at his Warrior side as a persona, but the way you explained it totally makes sense. Reiner is such an amazing character, you really did him justice. His conversation with Eren in "Declaration of War" is one of my favourites moments in any series.
My views on Reiner hasn’t changed, as he’s still one of my favorite characters in the show. I just have a newfound appreciation for him as this has opened my eyes to my own flaws and shortcomings as a human and as a man. People are often most critical of themselves during their teen years. But having left that at the age of 20 I am now, honestly this kind of internal reflection that this video and Reiner’s arc as a whole just goes to show that there’s still a lot that needs to be addressed in one’s life. Like you stated, that change sometimes could take over the course of an entire life. This video, and yours on Jean have been more helpful than anyone else could have been. So thanks for the great content.
Part of why I love aot so much, been watching the mystery unfold from my mid teens when it started to now as it’s finally ending, and maturing and reflecting the whole time, seeing yourself in these complex well developed characters who are maturing alongside yourself at the same time is really something else

I remember a similar feeling when I hit 20 as well. Almost like I could see the chapters of my life more clearly. Turns out a final stint of brain growth occurs between the ages of 20-25, most occuring around the 20-21 mark. Interesting stuff! I found my psyche really developed around that time. A shame I just have depression lol
I love Reiners character so much. He’s so complex and the scene where he reveals that he and Bertolt are traitors is absolutely my favorite moment in fiction.
I hadn't made the connection before seeing this that Reiner even before he attempts suicide, he wanted to be there for the children to have a strong figure to look up to, he bought them a bunch of food and he wanted them to have a great day outside the walls. He was unconsciously trying to give them the kind of care and guidance that he didn't have as a child.
Reiner has always been the most interesting AOT character to me. I always felt like he was the most internally tragic character. He is so sincere in his desire to grow, but completely disenfranchised and intensely in need of a mentor. And he is consistently punished for failing, despite trying to trail-blaze his identity in the only ways he understands how. He deserved so much better, but was thrust onto a stage he wasn't prepared for. And inevitably his lack of development created failure and resulted in deeper damage to his ability to finally develop into a full man. He really never stood a chance.
Bonus comment: I'd love to see you do a double analysis of Ymir and Historia(double because their characters are such obvious parallels to each other that they can't really be separated) and how they both wear masks of selfishness and selflessness despite internally being the exact opposite.

Ymir's true nature is selflessness, she only became selfish after the very people who worshipped her betrayed her, she never wanted to live for other people again, she vowed to live with herself and hid behind a mask of selfishness until she had found someone to ultimately sacrifice herself for, which was Historia.

Reiner is without a doubt my favorite AoT character so when I saw you were doing a video on him man, was I HYPED. I've always seen Reiner as a child seeking compassion & love, and I might've had half the answer right, but your analysis using the persona/ego/shadow was just great & (as usual with your videos) made me appreciate his character even more. I already recognized many of the things you mentioned, like the story of the man who hung himself, how Eren is a reflection of Reiner or the scene were he was about to un-alive himself as a moment of renaissance but I was never able to put all the pieces together the way you did here. That scene were Reiner is saved by Falco's hit on the wall behind him never once did I thought of it as Reiner killing his persona! Bc you're right, he DID pull the trigger and the editing in that moment really makes it seem like he did shot the gun. That realization while watching your video was really cool. And that ending with the upheaval against the king/father and how AoT does it through Reiner it was simply beautiful. You always bring a new light to whatever character or theme you talk about and I really appreciate that. Whether it's thru philosophy, psychology, literature or even religion one of the many things I love about AoT is the way it can be analyzed from many different perspectives and you always do a great job at that, you're very clear with what you want to say without making it sound overly complicated. Season 4 Reiner was actually 1 of my favorite characters (along with Jean). I always had a lot sympathy for him and could see pretty obviously in season 4 he regretted the life he lived and felt that what he was brought up being told he needed to do was wrong. I struggle myself with anxiety, depression, ptsd, and to a great extent “lack of knowing myself” because growing up I was never allowed to be anything other than what was expected (and grew up without a father too, though I’m female so I’m not sure if that plays a part or not). That might be why he ended up as 1 of my favorites, being able to identify with him on some level. So, while this video might not have changed how I view him, it showed in great detail how he came to be one of the best characters, in my opinion. It humanized him and gave him depth (a depth that I felt he didn’t have in season 1 when he was still fronting his persona). I’m glad to see such a in-depth analysis of him.
I think the reasons you’ve listed for your resonance with Reiner is why so many people connect with him - This is life, and life is too impersonal and brutal to not scar and immobilize you in some way. Art, then, is the remedy, as it both betrays and compliments life. Art is an avenue for dissecting the absurdity of this great mess we’re in. Clearly, Attack on Titan is doing it’s job if Reiner resonated with you so profoundly. I really appreciate your extension of vulnerability. :)
This was an incredibly enriching analysis!! I had always traced Reiner's Warrior/Soldier dilemma back to his horrible experience with Marco, but I'd never given more thought to how he portrayed himself through his Warrior persona since way back before that, and how that ties in to his attraction to "Christa". And also the paralels you drew with Marcel/Marco/Marlo and Jean were incredible, I really hope you analyze all the characters!!
It wasn't just a negligent father, he was parentified by the emotional instability in his home environment with his mom. It's heavily implied that she heavily implied he needed to fix her problems. He was never actually a child. That said I don't think he's evil, I think acting like the father figure he didn't have made him feel better & it became habit because our brains like to keep doing what feels good because of how the reward systems are set up.
It is also worth noting that all of Reiner’s personas involve being a reliable person. First, he had to be the best warrior. Then, he had to be the excellent replacement to Marcel. Upon his split, Reiner had to be a hard-yet-fair trainer in the 114th and also the consummate spy. Reiner really expects that he will shoulder burdens until he can’t, and his parentification is a big part of that.

Hello! I wanna start this comment off by saying I am not only a major Reiner lover but also a psychology student and a major nut for psychology and mental health discussion and research. Firstly, I want to say THANK YOU so much for making an analysis of Reiner and his mental state and not just slapping the label of Disassociative Identity Disorder onto him. I feel like way too many people see his splintered self and are so quick to claim that he has DID. I feel like, as you said, his troubles-- while they are absolutely still rooted in early life trauma as DID is-- are much more strongly indicative of something like a personality disorder or attachment disorder, and ongoing conflict with persona + ego and sense of self. In my opinion it also goes without saying that Reiner (and honestly several other characters) undoubtably exhibit symptoms of PTSD. I also really enjoyed your whole discussion of the battle of one's self image relating to masculinity, and discovering/coming to terms with the fact that armour is useless without something soft inside to be protected. I will say the one thing I really disagreed with is your point that all of his compassion towards others while hiding behind his personas was fabricated and fake. I absolutely do think that he felt and cared for people on both sides of the wall, though definitely not everybody, and he for sure cared for some more than others. For example, while he may not have had strong attachment or feeling for all of those he spent time with in the 104th, I don't think you can deny that there wasn't at least some sort of connection there, at least for a few of the others. (There are a lot more little hints and nuggets of content demonstrating this in the manga, but also in places like the short stories and other official yet more obscure sources of AoT content.) Take for example Bertholdt's speech near the end of season 2 when he and Reiner are trying to flee with Eren and Ymir-- the whole point of that monolouge of his was to desperately try making it clear to the others that he and Reiner's time among the other 104th members wasn't entirely an act. That it was essentially the only respite they had had in life, and that it pained them to have to go through with their mission against these people which they had come to view as friends in at least some way. To mention Bertholdt again, I think that he in particular is an excellent example of the fact that Reiner's compassion absolutely is not entirely superficial in all cases. Honestly it could be argued that Bertholdt was one of the few people Reiner was able to harbor genuine attachment to without as much guilt. I could go on about that particular point for ages, but I think a small detail (which was left out of the anime for some reason or another :() that really helps to illustrate Reiner's genuine care for Bertholdt-- again, over most others, I would argue-- is that after the battle of Shiganshina, Reiner is shown crying when Zeke saves him and he realizes that Bertholdt was left behind. The only other brief thing I want to mention is your idea that Reiner is attracted to Historia because she mirrors his sense of insincere compassion. I don't deny that both of them definitely know a thing or two about insincere compassion-- to a degree-- and an aching need to prove themselves which stems from bad parental figures. You got it right on the nose there I think! But again, I don't think that either of their compassion was truly 100% faked all of the time. If anything, I think his attraction to Historia is the insincere thing in this situation. We only ever see him commenting on and/or expressing his "attraction" to her whenever he is clearly deep into the influence of his soldier persona; instances where he seems to be forgetting his true self. so I think it could reasonably be argued that he never really felt genuine romantic attraction to her of any kind. All this being said, I liked your video a lot more than any other analysis of Reiner and his character that I've watched. Like I said before, so many of them hinge on saying he has DID which I don't really feel is accurate. But your video had a lot of well-informed psychological discussion which I not only enjoyed watching but also felt was way more true to Reiner's character. I like that you continuously were pulling from things like quotes and interviews from Isayama throughout the analysis as well, and making an effort to really analyze not just Reiner here, but also the show and its plot + intent + themes. Overall, other than disagreeing with you on the feigned compassion piece, I did enjoy your video a lot!! All of this is just my opinion anyways and honestly it's awesome enough seeing a video like this on my favourite character, one that clearly had a lot of time, thought, and research put into it! It didn't change my view of Reiner, but it definitely was not a bad watch, and you've convinced me to watch your analysis of Jean as well :D ( Also holy shit I'm sorry for leaving such a ridiculous wall of text in your comments section god damn 😭)
i recall that in the manga, Reiner's ptsd centered around not only what was shown in the anime, but also how he had to leave Bertholdt behind to die, a guilt that ate him up on the inside that nearly drove him to ending his life it was a shame that the anime didn't show their brotherhood as well
Absolutely. What happened to Bertholdt and how helpless he was to do anything was a huge part of what drove Reiner's mental health to become as bad as it was and you are so right that it definitely comes across better in the manga. Those two were such inseparable other halves that Bert's death left Reiner completely broken, especially since Reiner felt at least somewhat responsible for it
People often talk about Eren's side of his argument that he is the same as Reiner but often not Reiner's side. Yes, they were both indoctrinated. Yes, they were both victims of circumstance and selfish goals. But no one talks about a deep, inate part of both of their characters. Internal discovery and acting upon it. For Eren, he has already figured out exactly who he is what he desires for, and his journey as making that desire come true. For Reiner, he falsely feeds himself lies and contradictions about who he is and spends the entire series reawakening the true version of himself that he has lost since he was barely a teenager. This is the true reason why Eren and Reiner clash. They are both victims of their desires. They don't want to be heroes, they don't want to be nobles, they simply want what was taken from them at such a young age. For Eren, it was his birthright to be free. For Reiner, it was his true self that was hidden beneath several masks. Season 4 is the ultimate breaking point of both sides and it is where it is confirmed that Eren and Reiner were always fated to clash with each other. Eren stops being the Sword forced to protect and instead lives up to being the Attack Titan, because he realized that living as a savior isn't his role. Reiner stops being a closeminded propagandist and embraces his role as the savior - not out of who he aspires to be, but because it's who he truly is. The position he's been dealt.
In my honest opinion, you just made one of the best videos on TH-cam. That video blew me away and I was left speechless. I was literally shaking my head in disbelief. You are one of the best to ever do it. I can't believe how every video becomes so much more thought provoking and insightful. I literally gained a wealth of knowledge I didn't know I actually needed on the topic of masculinity and mental health. I'm literally going to watch this over and over to fully absorb these perspectives. You are literally helping me build foundational blocks in my life, whether that means anything or not, it doesn't matter. My greatest request to you is to read Vinland Saga or watch the anime's first season. Extremely interesting as always. Not really convinced the help and morale he offers Armin and Eren when he sees them struggle in training with things he's struggled with himself are superficial forms of compassion. Seeing yourself in others' struggles and not wanting them to keep suffering the way you had to is to me what empathy at its strongest means. And there's also the fact that when Reiner's father rejected him, Reiner tells himself he doesn't need his father and that he can still be the one to save the world. The idea that this will solve everything is shattered by Marcel's death etc., but it does reveal the genuine wish for change that Reiner's always carried with him (like Reiner saying he can't die yet when he's breaking through the walls because he still doesn't understand anything), that to me is why Eren says he and Reiner are the same. Were he to have grown up in Liberio, Eren's obsession with freedom would have manifested in him becoming a warrior so he could destroy the island of those devils who are responsible for him having to live life inside a prison.
I may be 2 years late but I gotta say, One of the best TH-cam videos i've ever seen, Reiner in my opinion is the best and coolest character in AOT and your analysis on his character makes me love him even more
Reiner is such a fun character cause over the course of the story I went from loving him to hating him to pitying him to hating him again and right back to loving him. Truly an emotional rollercoaster.

Two things: 1) Your prediction about Reiner wasnt met with in the ending, as you might already know. But just like you said, it would have been more complete for an end to Reiner's journey. 2) I love these videos of analysis of characters of yours, and how you understand a lot more deeply than me. ANd it makes me wonder how do you feel when you understand the central themes like that. I would like to ask if just reading and consuming a whole lot of literature, studies on philosophy do it, or, what exactly? I would be eagerly waiting for an answer for this question.
Reiner is my favorite SnK/AoT character (and one of my favorites of all time) so I have seen pretty much every video on him on this platform, but I gotta say, this is probably the best. I think you completely nailed his character, and even I learned a few things, seriously, great work!!

I feel so attacked. I already related to his depression, and now I also relate to him wearing an emotional armour from himself. It's a result of being bullied back then, and i'm still struggling with feeling my emotions instead of performing them for others and being just numb inside. Ouch.

A point that you didnt mention but goes along with your amazing video is that, after Rainer facing Eren in the basement, he turns into a armorless titan. After facing Eren he loses his armor and turns into a body that fights for something.

He finally became a hero. He didn’t think about dying, but willing to put his life on the line because he knew it was the right thing to do. But he gets to live and learn to be happy to be himself, not Marcel, not the warrior, but be Reiner. When he talks to his mom he was almost bracing himself the feeling of shame he no longer has his armor titan, but she embraced him happy to just have him back.
I rarely comment on youtube videos but I have to say that this is incredible. Not only did it change the way I see Reiner but it also changed the way I see myself. As someone who always hides themselves behind a "mask" in order to be accepted I can see how damaging it is. Always seeking validation and doing so while sacrificing your own dreams and desires leaves you broken and hollow. The quote "live for yourself" definitely hit hard and I hope we can all find the courage to change course if needed. Thank you for making this video

I’ve seen many AoT analysis videos, some of them quite great, but this one has made it to the top of my list for its Mar(s)-naming connection. Analyzing thematic symbolism is tricky and often it falls flat (cue the ton of opinions reading too much into the language of flowers, including opinions on the flowers on Mikasa’s deathbed). Yours, though, not only made sense and seemed relevant, it also was about a symbol so subtle that I doubt even Isayama realized it (happy accident, eh). Marco-Marcel-Marlo-Marley-Maria switched a lightbulb in my head. Here’s a sub, King!
I’ll our comments I have on the video here while I’m watching it: I never realized the parallel between Marcel and Marco- that’s actually really sweet, scary, and horrible all at once. All of the “Mar” and the scale stuff is really interesting, and sad- especially how Reiner failed to step up like Jean did. I like to think is how Annie reacted in that situation of Marcel’s death. Bertholdt was trying to get along- move on- and basically tried to bring everyone together, and Annie straight up told Reiner to die if he was going to be so useless and feel guilty. Things might (and I say might) have gone differently for Reiner if Annie was more supportive as well. 19:22 THIS PART IS KILLING ME- BUT ITS SO TRUE, THEY WONT UNDERSTAND UNLESS YOU WORD IT LIKE THIS 💀 19:49 I love how you used a part from the voice over video in this lol I find Reiner saving himself from suicide an amazing scene. Like- what would have happened is Falco wasn’t there? Now that he’s becoming whole he’s starting to feel love for people who have felt love for him, and it’s truly amazing how this realization that he- has feelings for these people- comes into play. Reiner’s guilt is explained so well in this video I don’t even know if I can say anything without sounding stupid because it’s golden here. Your little character is the best artwork I’ve seen all day, and I’ve been looking at MAPPA animation and art for like half an hour. If Reiner lives I’m gonna be so happy- I’m gonna be so sad if he dies now. Like bro he’s been trying so hard all this time but he’s got that plot amour- don’t kill him after he a actually wants to live come on 😭 he’s my favorite he doesn’t deserve this. Reddrik, I’ve been heavily invested in Attack on Titan since 2017. I absolutely adore its story and characters. However, I suck at understanding the greater subtext and meaning of the work sometimes. I found your channel through your Jean video. Like many fans who got into Attack on Titan through the… ship-heavy, tumblr-y side of the fandom, I misunderstood him for a while. I liked Jean, but the horse jokes and the fanon depiction of him as a “cocky asshole” warped my perception. It was through your video on Jean that I realized how stunted he was as a person, how much growth he’s experienced, and just how masterfully he was written. I rewatched parts of the anime after that video, and found myself really loving him. He’s now one of my favorite characters in Attack on Titan. Your Jean video was flawless, and I knew I’d want to see more of your content. I’m very, VERY glad I subscribed! Your insight into Reiner is FASCINATING!!! You really did change the way I see Reiner, and I think your explanation of his personas makes much more sense than the one the majority of the fandom knows. Connecting them to his need for approval is brilliant! The second you brought up the “merging of souls” point with Marco and Jean, as well as Marcel and Galliard, I started thinking about how that could apply to other characters. I can’t believe I’d never made this connection before, or heard anyone discuss it before this video!!! Could this “merge” apply to Ksaver and Zeke, or Ymir and Historia? I definitely intend to rewatch some of the more Reiner-centric Attack on Titan episodes to see him in this new light. I’ve already shared this video with my friends who love Attack on Titan, and I know they’ll enjoy it as well! I really must praise you not only for the research and writing you’ve done, but for the ways your videos are structured. You present this information in a way that is easy to understand, despite the complexity of psychology. I know jack shit about psychology, and yet you explain these concepts in ways I can understand. The way you format these videos is as if you are walking the viewer through a puzzle maze, guiding us through the process of fitting the pieces together until we can reach the end. I like writing video essays/presentations myself (I’ve never shared them online, and they are nowhere NEAR as polished as yours lol). They are fun when you get your initial idea and start gathering connections and making points, but the labor required to complete them is… heavy. Researching, taking notes, finding examples, creating narratives, writing scripts, gathering visuals, collecting audio, recording the voice track, EDITING… it’s so much work! I have to say, for the fourth video of its kind on this channel, you’ve really nailed this down. Structuring your thoughts/points/arguments into cohesive, steady narratives is SO DIFFICULT, and yet you do it really well! For this kind of quality, I’m happy to wait however long it takes for you to be happy with your work. The wait for this video was 110% worth it. I’d love to hear your analysis of other characters, arcs, themes, etc. from Attack on Titan! And analysis of other anime, movies, or tv shows as well! I had originally written a list here with some suggestions of other Attack on Titan characters you could make videos on, but I ended up listing nearly every major character in the series. The passion you have for analysis and storytelling is very clear in your videos. I’m eagerly waiting for your next one, no matter how long the wait may be!

If I must leave one video suggestion, it would be an analysis of either Ymir, Historia, or their relationship/impact on each other. They are both very complex on their own, but the way they change the directions of each other’s lives is really something. Ymir encourages Historia to be more selfish (valuing her own life and her future), and Historia makes Ymir a more selfless person (giving up on her life to keep Historia safe). Even a video just on Ymir would be super interesting! I think she is misunderstood by the fandom at large as a character who doesn’t see the value in living, when she actually cares very much about the trajectory of her own life. And yet, Ymir leaves with Reiner, knowing she’ll die, and is okay with that because she believes that staying could have put Historia in danger. In Season 3 Part 2 Episode 9, she wrote in her letter to Historia that her one regret was “that I wasn’t able to marry [Historia]”-she grows to care about people other than herself. I’d love to hear your thoughts on her!

totally amazing video, while watching i couldn't catch the parallels that you caught and i am very impressed. about the scene where eren saying that he is same with reiner i had a different perspective, basically about the circumstances they were under at that time etc now i see it differently. as you said, dying characters being part of the other characters is a post modernist way of storytelling and it perfectly shows the stability of character, we saw during the series reiner having nightmares about marcel getting eaten and his regrets of being not the eaten one through the every hell route happened to them, no matter how many comrades died because of him he dreams the same nightmare, the one that right before his mind split yet for jean we cant say the same (i dont remember him having nightmares about marcos death) he doesn't regret the way reiner does. i think it is about them mirroring their inner selves and true desires, jean wanted a life without his caring mother he wanted to be a man but reiner was born into a world where his childish wishes-and i actually remember none- came after of his mothers wish them to be normal marleyans there are a lot of things i wanna say, i wanna check all the references you made but in my time zone it is almost 1 am so i might have messed up a bit up there plus so thanks again for the video, really appreciated all the hard work you put into it!!! well done

Even before coming face to face with Eren, I noticed that Reiner was starting to heal his father issues by sorta becoming a father to the Warrior candidates. Which I’ve noticed as a greater theme in media, Boys who grow up without Fathers, trying to be good fathers themselves. To provide and encourage but also scold and correct, their children. Giving them what they lacked.
Reiner already was one of my favorite characters in one of my favorite shows. But just as I expected, you absolutely delivered with providing a study revealing the details I would've never thought of myself, even those that include necessity of knowing concepts I was already familiar with. For example, I've been paying attention to ideas of split personality, putting off a persona and overly identifying with it in cases of several other characters within different series but yet I still went along with the common interpretation that "there are only 2 Reiners". But after you put it out, it sounds so accurate that I can't imagine it to be otherwise. Fantastic piece of work. You're probably the most undersubbed channel I know.

Reiner has always been my favorite character in the show, but I could never really put my finger on why. After watching this absolutely genius video, I feel like I'm a little bit closer to understanding. Flawed and damaged as he is, I just feel a deep compassion and sympathy for him. Compassion, but at the same time a huge amount of respect that he somehow always had the strength to keep moving forward through all that pain and trauma. To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Attack on Titan. The drama is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the drama will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Zeke's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these ideas, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Attack on Titan truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Eren's existential catchphrase "Tatakae," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Hajime Isayama's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Attack on Titan tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

My views on Reiner hasn’t changed, as he’s still one of my favorite characters in the show. I just have a newfound appreciation for him as this has opened my eyes to my own flaws and shortcomings as a human and as a man. People are often most critical of themselves during their teen years. But having left that at the age of 20 I am now, honestly this kind of internal reflection that this video and Reiner’s arc as a whole just goes to show that there’s still a lot that needs to be addressed in one’s life. Like you stated, that change sometimes could take over the course of an entire life. This video, and yours on Jean have been more helpful than anyone else could have been. So thanks for the great content.

I love Reiners character so much. He’s so complex and the scene where he reveals that he and Bertolt are traitors is absolutely my favorite moment in fiction.

That scene for me invokes the same feeling as when Hank discovers Walter is Heisenberg. So not surprised Isayama loves that show.
I hadn't made the connection before seeing this that Reiner even before he attempts suicide, he wanted to be there for the children to have a strong figure to look up to, he bought them a bunch of food and he wanted them to have a great day outside the walls. He was unconsciously trying to give them the kind of care and guidance that he didn't have as a child.

Reiner has always been the most interesting AOT character to me. I always felt like he was the most internally tragic character. He is so sincere in his desire to grow, but completely disenfranchised and intensely in need of a mentor. And he is consistently punished for failing, despite trying to trail-blaze his identity in the only ways he understands how. He deserved so much better, but was thrust onto a stage he wasn't prepared for. And inevitably his lack of development created failure and resulted in deeper damage to his ability to finally develop into a full man. He really never stood a chance.
Bonus comment: I'd love to see you do a double analysis of Ymir and Historia(double because their characters are such obvious parallels to each other that they can't really be separated) and how they both wear masks of selfishness and selflessness despite internally being the exact opposite.

Man what a beautiful & well presented video. Reiner is without a doubt my favorite AoT character so when I saw you were doing a video on him man, was I HYPED.
I've always seen Reiner as a child seeking compassion & love, and I might've had half the answer right, but your analysis using the persona/ego/shadow was just great & (as usual with your videos) made me appreciate his character even more.
I already recognized many of the things you mentioned, like the story of the man who hung himself, how Eren is a reflection of Reiner or the scene were he was about to un-alive himself as a moment of renaissance but I was never able to put all the pieces together the way you did here. That scene were Reiner is saved by Falco's hit on the wall behind him never once did I thought of it as Reiner killing his persona! Bc you're right, he DID pull the trigger and the editing in that moment really makes it seem like he did shot the gun. That realization while watching your video was really cool. And that ending with the upheaval against the king/father and how AoT does it through Reiner it was simply beautiful.
You always bring a new light to whatever character or theme you talk about and I really appreciate that. Whether it's thru philosophy, psychology, literature or even religion one of the many things I love about AoT is the way it can be analyzed from many different perspectives and you always do a great job at that, you're very clear with what you want to say without making it sound overly complicated. Season 4 Reiner was actually 1 of my favorite characters (along with Jean). I always had a lot sympathy for him and could see pretty obviously in season 4 he regretted the life he lived and felt that what he was brought up being told he needed to do was wrong. I struggle myself with anxiety, depression, ptsd, and to a great extent “lack of knowing myself” because growing up I was never allowed to be anything other than what was expected (and grew up without a father too, though I’m female so I’m not sure if that plays a part or not). That might be why he ended up as 1 of my favorites, being able to identify with him on some level.
So, while this video might not have changed how I view him, it showed in great detail how he came to be one of the best characters, in my opinion. It humanized him and gave him depth (a depth that I felt he didn’t have in season 1 when he was still fronting his persona). I’m glad to see such a in-depth analysis of him.
I think the reasons you’ve listed for your resonance with Reiner is why so many people connect with him - This is life, and life is too impersonal and brutal to not scar and immobilize you in some way. Art, then, is the remedy, as it both betrays and compliments life. Art is an avenue for dissecting the absurdity of this great mess we’re in. Clearly, Attack on Titan is doing it’s job if Reiner resonated with you so profoundly. I really appreciate your extension of vulnerability. :)

I had always traced Reiner's Warrior/Soldier dilemma back to his horrible experience with Marco, but I'd never given more thought to how he portrayed himself through his Warrior persona since way back before that, and how that ties in to his attraction to "Christa". It wasn't just a negligent father, he was parentified by the emotional instability in his home environment with his mom. It's heavily implied that she heavily implied he needed to fix her problems. He was never actually a child.
That said I don't think he's evil, I think acting like the father figure he didn't have made him feel better & it became habit because our brains like to keep doing what feels good because of how the reward systems are set up.
It is also worth noting that all of Reiner’s personas involve being a reliable person. First, he had to be the best warrior. Then, he had to be the excellent replacement to Marcel. Upon his split, Reiner had to be a hard-yet-fair trainer in the 114th and also the consummate spy. Reiner really expects that he will shoulder burdens until he can’t, and his parentification is a big part of that.

Hello! I wanna start this comment off by saying I am not only a major Reiner lover but also a psychology student and a major nut for psychology and mental health discussion and research.
Firstly, I want to say THANK YOU so much for making an analysis of Reiner and his mental state and not just slapping the label of Disassociative Identity Disorder onto him. I feel like way too many people see his splintered self and are so quick to claim that he has DID. I feel like, as you said, his troubles-- while they are absolutely still rooted in early life trauma as DID is-- are much more strongly indicative of something like a personality disorder or attachment disorder, and ongoing conflict with persona + ego and sense of self. In my opinion it also goes without saying that Reiner (and honestly several other characters) undoubtably exhibit symptoms of PTSD. I also really enjoyed your whole discussion of the battle of one's self image relating to masculinity, and discovering/coming to terms with the fact that armour is useless without something soft inside to be protected.
I will say the one thing I really disagreed with is your point that all of his compassion towards others while hiding behind his personas was fabricated and fake. I absolutely do think that he felt and cared for people on both sides of the wall, though definitely not everybody, and he for sure cared for some more than others. For example, while he may not have had strong attachment or feeling for all of those he spent time with in the 104th, I don't think you can deny that there wasn't at least some sort of connection there, at least for a few of the others. (There are a lot more little hints and nuggets of content demonstrating this in the manga, but also in places like the short stories and other official yet more obscure sources of AoT content.)
Take for example Bertholdt's speech near the end of season 2 when he and Reiner are trying to flee with Eren and Ymir-- the whole point of that monolouge of his was to desperately try making it clear to the others that he and Reiner's time among the other 104th members wasn't entirely an act. That it was essentially the only respite they had had in life, and that it pained them to have to go through with their mission against these people which they had come to view as friends in at least some way.
To mention Bertholdt again, I think that he in particular is an excellent example of the fact that Reiner's compassion absolutely is not entirely superficial in all cases. Honestly it could be argued that Bertholdt was one of the few people Reiner was able to harbor genuine attachment to without as much guilt. I could go on about that particular point for ages, but I think a small detail (which was left out of the anime for some reason or another :() that really helps to illustrate Reiner's genuine care for Bertholdt-- again, over most others, I would argue-- is that after the battle of Shiganshina, Reiner is shown crying when Zeke saves him and he realizes that Bertholdt was left behind.
The only other brief thing I want to mention is your idea that Reiner is attracted to Historia because she mirrors his sense of insincere compassion. I don't deny that both of them definitely know a thing or two about insincere compassion-- to a degree-- and an aching need to prove themselves which stems from bad parental figures. You got it right on the nose there I think! But again, I don't think that either of their compassion was truly 100% faked all of the time. If anything, I think his attraction to Historia is the insincere thing in this situation. We only ever see him commenting on and/or expressing his "attraction" to her whenever he is clearly deep into the influence of his soldier persona; instances where he seems to be forgetting his true self. so I think it could reasonably be argued that he never really felt genuine romantic attraction to her of any kind.
All this being said, I liked your video a lot more than any other analysis of Reiner and his character that I've watched. Like I said before, so many of them hinge on saying he has DID which I don't really feel is accurate. But your video had a lot of well-informed psychological discussion which I not only enjoyed watching but also felt was way more true to Reiner's character. I like that you continuously were pulling from things like quotes and interviews from Isayama throughout the analysis as well, and making an effort to really analyze not just Reiner here, but also the show and its plot + intent + themes. Overall, other than disagreeing with you on the feigned compassion piece, I did enjoy your video a lot!! All of this is just my opinion anyways and honestly it's awesome enough seeing a video like this on my favourite character, one that clearly had a lot of time, thought, and research put into it! It didn't change my view of Reiner, but it definitely was not a bad watch, and you've convinced me to watch your analysis of Jean as well :D

i recall that in the manga, Reiner's ptsd centered around not only what was shown in the anime, but also how he had to leave Bertholdt behind to die, a guilt that ate him up on the inside that nearly drove him to ending his life

What happened to Bertholdt and how helpless he was to do anything was a huge part of what drove Reiner's mental health to become as bad as it was and you are so right that it definitely comes across better in the manga. Those two were such inseparable other halves that Bert's death left Reiner completely broken, especially since Reiner felt at least somewhat responsible for it

People often talk about Eren's side of his argument that he is the same as Reiner but often not Reiner's side. Yes, they were both indoctrinated. Yes, they were both victims of circumstance and selfish goals. But no one talks about a deep, inate part of both of their characters. Internal discovery and acting upon it. For Eren, he has already figured out exactly who he is what he desires for, and his journey as making that desire come true. For Reiner, he falsely feeds himself lies and contradictions about who he is and spends the entire series reawakening the true version of himself that he has lost since he was barely a teenager.
This is the true reason why Eren and Reiner clash. They are both victims of their desires. They don't want to be heroes, they don't want to be nobles, they simply want what was taken from them at such a young age. For Eren, it was his birthright to be free. For Reiner, it was his true self that was hidden beneath several masks.
Season 4 is the ultimate breaking point of both sides and it is where it is confirmed that Eren and Reiner were always fated to clash with each other. Eren stops being the Sword forced to protect and instead lives up to being the Attack Titan, because he realized that living as a savior isn't his role. Reiner stops being a closeminded propagandist and embraces his role as the savior - not out of who he aspires to be, but because it's who he truly is. The position he's been dealt.
In my honest opinion, you just made one of the best videos on TH-cam. That video blew me away and I was left speechless. I was literally shaking my head in disbelief. You are one of the best to ever do it.

Seconding Vinland Saga. One of the most based stories in modern times.
Extremely interesting as always. Not really convinced the help and morale he offers Armin and Eren when he sees them struggle in training with things he's struggled with himself are superficial forms of compassion. Seeing yourself in others' struggles and not wanting them to keep suffering the way you had to is to me what empathy at its strongest means. And there's also the fact that when Reiner's father rejected him, Reiner tells himself he doesn't need his father and that he can still be the one to save the world. The idea that this will solve everything is shattered by Marcel's death etc., but it does reveal the genuine wish for change that Reiner's always carried with him (like Reiner saying he can't die yet when he's breaking through the walls because he still doesn't understand anything), that to me is why Eren says he and Reiner are the same. Were he to have grown up in Liberio, Eren's obsession with freedom would have manifested in him becoming a warrior so he could destroy the island of those devils who are responsible for him having to live life inside a prison.
I mainly want to point out that as a kid Reiner has expressed more desires than just the one for approval

Reiner is such a fun character cause over the course of the story I went from loving him to hating him to pitying him to hating him again and right back to loving him. Truly an emotional rollercoaster.

1) Your prediction about Reiner wasnt met with in the ending, as you might already know. But just like you said, it would have been more complete for an end to Reiner's journey.
2) I love these videos of analysis of characters of yours, and how you understand a lot more deeply than me. ANd it makes me wonder how do you feel when you understand the central themes like that. I would like to ask if just reading and consuming a whole lot of literature, studies on philosophy do it, or, what exactly? I would be eagerly waiting for an answer for this question.
Reiner is my favorite SnK/AoT character (and one of my favorites of all time) so I have seen pretty much every video on him on this platform, but I gotta say, this is probably the best. I think you completely nailed his character, and even I learned a few things, seriously, great work!!

People mostly see a Jean in themselves but I was more of a Reiner (though the redemption arc hasn't quite come yet lol). The persona theme really clicked with me. Great video, you finally posted and absolutely nailed it. Keep up the good work!
I feel so attacked. I already related to his depression, and now I also relate to him wearing an emotional armour from himself. It's a result of being bullied back then, and i'm still struggling with feeling my emotions instead of performing them for others and being just numb inside. Ouch.

He finally became a hero. He didn’t think about dying, but willing to put his life on the line because he knew it was the right thing to do. But he gets to live and learn to be happy to be himself, not Marcel, not the warrior, but be Reiner. When he talks to his mom he was almost bracing himself the feeling of shame he no longer has his armor titan, but she embraced him happy to just have him back.
I know it has been only like an hour from the release of the video, but 400 views is way too low for this kind of masterpiece of an analysis

As someone who always hides themselves behind a "mask" in order to be accepted I can see how damaging it is. I’ve seen many AoT analysis videos, some of them quite great, but this one has made it to the top of my list for its Mar(s)-naming connection. Analyzing thematic symbolism is tricky and often it falls flat (cue the ton of opinions reading too much into the language of flowers, including opinions on the flowers on Mikasa’s deathbed). Yours, though, not only made sense and seemed relevant, it also was about a symbol so subtle that I doubt even Isayama realized it (happy accident, eh). Marco-Marcel-Marlo-Marley-Maria switched a lightbulb in my head.

I never realized the parallel between Marcel and Marco- that’s actually really sweet, scary, and horrible all at once.
All of the “Mar” and the scale stuff is really interesting, and sad- especially how Reiner failed to step up like Jean did. I like to think is how Annie reacted in that situation of Marcel’s death. Bertholdt was trying to get along- move on- and basically tried to bring everyone together, and Annie straight up told Reiner to die if he was going to be so useless and feel guilty. Things might (and I say might) have gone differently for Reiner if Annie was more supportive as well.

Reddrik, I’ve been heavily invested in Attack on Titan since 2017. I absolutely adore its story and characters. However, I suck at understanding the greater subtext and meaning of the work sometimes. I found your channel through your Jean video. Like many fans who got into Attack on Titan through the… ship-heavy, tumblr-y side of the fandom, I misunderstood him for a while. I liked Jean, but the horse jokes and the fanon depiction of him as a “cocky asshole” warped my perception.
It was through your video on Jean that I realized how stunted he was as a person, how much growth he’s experienced, and just how masterfully he was written. I rewatched parts of the anime after that video, and found myself really loving him. He’s now one of my favorite characters in Attack on Titan.
Your Jean video was flawless, and I knew I’d want to see more of your content. I’m very, VERY glad I subscribed! Your insight into Reiner is FASCINATING!!! You really did change the way I see Reiner, and I think your explanation of his personas makes much more sense than the one the majority of the fandom knows. Connecting them to his need for approval is brilliant! The second you brought up the “merging of souls” point with Marco and Jean, as well as Marcel and Galliard, I started thinking about how that could apply to other characters. I can’t believe I’d never made this connection before, or heard anyone discuss it before this video!!! Could this “merge” apply to Ksaver and Zeke, or Ymir and Historia? I definitely intend to rewatch some of the more Reiner-centric Attack on Titan episodes to see him in this new light. I’ve already shared this video with my friends who love Attack on Titan, and I know they’ll enjoy it as well!
I really must praise you not only for the research and writing you’ve done, but for the ways your videos are structured. You present this information in a way that is easy to understand, despite the complexity of psychology. I know jack shit about psychology, and yet you explain these concepts in ways I can understand. The way you format these videos is as if you are walking the viewer through a puzzle maze, guiding us through the process of fitting the pieces together until we can reach the end.
I like writing video essays/presentations myself (I’ve never shared them online, and they are nowhere NEAR as polished as yours lol). They are fun when you get your initial idea and start gathering connections and making points, but the labor required to complete them is… heavy. Researching, taking notes, finding examples, creating narratives, writing scripts, gathering visuals, collecting audio, recording the voice track, EDITING… it’s so much work!
I have to say, for the fourth video of its kind on this channel, you’ve really nailed this down. Structuring your thoughts/points/arguments into cohesive, steady narratives is SO DIFFICULT, and yet you do it really well! For this kind of quality, I’m happy to wait however long it takes for you to be happy with your work. The wait for this video was 110% worth it.
I’d love to hear your analysis of other characters, arcs, themes, etc. from Attack on Titan! And analysis of other anime, movies, or tv shows as well! I had originally written a list here with some suggestions of other Attack on Titan characters you could make videos on, but I ended up listing nearly every major character in the series. The passion you have for analysis and storytelling is very clear in your videos. I’m eagerly waiting for your next one, no matter how long the wait may be!

I wanted to translate large facilities of shared experience, understanding the invisible mechanics of the mind, in a very digestible and accessible way without sacrificing the concepts’ organic complexity. So many people miss out on such vital stuff as they never get around to picking up dusty, old textbooks. No disrespect to the textbook, of course, as without the textbook videos like this wouldn’t be possible, but we are all toiling over shared experiences, feelings, and archetypes which are UNIVERSAL to every human, yet we fail on almost every level to communicate on them with one another since not many people HAVE someone to introduce them to the said textbook. Thanks so much for the comment. Also, I highly recommend publishing a video essay/presentation, just for fun! It’s heavy work, but extremely fulfilling work. If you have anything to offer in this medium, I will be the first to watch it. :)
If I must leave one video suggestion, it would be an analysis of either Ymir, Historia, or their relationship/impact on each other. They are both very complex on their own, but the way they change the directions of each other’s lives is really something. Ymir encourages Historia to be more selfish (valuing her own life and her future), and Historia makes Ymir a more selfless person (giving up on her life to keep Historia safe). Even a video just on Ymir would be super interesting! I think she is misunderstood by the fandom at large as a character who doesn’t see the value in living, when she actually cares very much about the trajectory of her own life. And yet, Ymir leaves with Reiner, knowing she’ll die, and is okay with that because she believes that staying could have put Historia in danger. In Season 3 Part 2 Episode 9, she wrote in her letter to Historia that her one regret was “that I wasn’t able to marry [Historia]”-she grows to care about people other than herself. I’d love to hear your thoughts on her!

totally amazing video, while watching i couldn't catch the parallels that you caught and i am very impressed. about the scene where eren saying that he is same with reiner i had a different perspective, basically about the circumstances they were under at that time etc now i see it differently.
as you said, dying characters being part of the other characters is a post modernist way of storytelling and it perfectly shows the stability of character, we saw during the series reiner having nightmares about marcel getting eaten and his regrets of being not the eaten one through the every hell route happened to them, no matter how many comrades died because of him he dreams the same nightmare, the one that right before his mind split yet for jean we cant say the same (i dont remember him having nightmares about marcos death) he doesn't regret the way reiner does. i think it is about them mirroring their inner selves and true desires, jean wanted a life without his caring mother he wanted to be a man but reiner was born into a world where his childish wishes-and i actually remember none- came after of his mothers wish them to be normal marleyans

Even before coming face to face with Eren, I noticed that Reiner was starting to heal his father issues by sorta becoming a father to the Warrior candidates.
Which I’ve noticed as a greater theme in media, Boys who grow up without Fathers, trying to be good fathers themselves. To provide and encourage but also scold and correct, their children. Giving them what they lacked.
Reiner already was one of my favorite characters in one of my favorite shows. But just as I expected, you absolutely delivered with providing a study revealing the details I would've never thought of myself, even those that include necessity of knowing concepts I was already familiar with. For example, I've been paying attention to ideas of split personality, putting off a persona and overly identifying with it in cases of several other characters within different series but yet I still went along with the common interpretation that "there are only 2 Reiners". But after you put it out, it sounds so accurate that I can't imagine it to be otherwise.

Reiner has always been my favorite character in the show, but I could never really put my finger on why. After watching this absolutely genius video, I feel like I'm a little bit closer to understanding.
Flawed and damaged as he is, I just feel a deep compassion and sympathy for him. Compassion, but at the same time a huge amount of respect that he somehow always had the strength to keep moving forward through all that pain and trauma. Just overall a really well written character!

This video can be understood by people with high IQ
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Attack on Titan. The drama is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the drama will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Zeke's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these ideas, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Attack on Titan truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Eren's existential catchphrase "Tatakae," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Hajime Isayama's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, i DO have a Attack on Titan tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎
You didn't change my opinion of Reiner as much as give me another video to send to people when the question why I have re-watched the anime everytime a new part of a season comes out. The story is so much deeper than a casual watcher could give it credit for.
