Honestly, as a massive Herzog fanboy, I'm legally bound to love all of his films, and Into the Abyss was one of the few films to ever move me to tears. The man is an impossibly amazing director, and an amazing human being. One of the greatest artists of all time.

I really feel for Mark trying to articulate what's so fascinating and attractive about Herzog... I think something like "He's so very lyrical and poetic (emotional?) yet so stern and frank".. I super paraphrased that... But I think that gets pretty close to what's so fascinating about his.. Sort of.. Approach to inquiry.

When you call someone pretentious you run the risk of exposing your own inability to perceive the depth of their expression. What is your favourite film?

The segment where the pastor is asked about squirrels on the golf course does serve a purpose. The pastor in his golf cart *chooses* to stop his cart to allow the helpless squirrel to hop out of the path and thus survive. Whereas in contrast, in the execution chamber -- the pastor is powerless to assist the restrained, helpless inmate avoid death.

And how did he miss the "point"? I don't really understand how you even came to that conclusion. It was a fair and balanced interview, that's what he wanted to do, and he succeeded. Not only that, but it showed just how much of a mess American culture is in. It's a phenomenal film, had many points to many sides. It's not supposed to be a opinionated documentary.

Good review but what a stupid and callous thing to say that "the intelligent listeners would be against the death penalty". There's a lot of reasons people are pro death penalty, namely if you've ever been on the other side of a crime like that and been totally violated or lost your loved ones to brutality. To say that only "non-intelligent people" are pro death penalty *is* pretentious and very closed minded. Just because someone doesn't agree with you or doesn't have the same experiences as you doesn't make them stupid.

Well I will not say they are stupid but maybe lack of deeper understanding makes them to become pro-death penalty.
