My husband (@Hunt on the Trails)and I travelled from the UK and thru-hiked the CT aged 57 to celebrate our retirement. The guy with the overweight pack reminded me how important it is to do your homework. We watched YT, read the handbook, data book and other online resources. We ran and hiked in the UK for a year to build our fitness and refine our equipment. The CT was an awesome and life-changing experience but I don’t believe we would have had a hope without all of the preparation.

Great video. Applaud you guys for the mileage you cranked out each day. I’m not a thru hiker and I don’t like doing the kind of mileage per day that you do. I’m 63 but love backpacking, off trailing, and typically do 7-10 day trips with 8-12mi per day cause only 4 days just doesn’t satisfy the yearning for being in nature. I agree that you need to find what types of backpacking you enjoy and what gear best meets your needs. I went down the UL rabbit hole and realized I like more comfort and security while also keeping the weight light. After retiring 7 years ago and getting reacquainted with backpacking I think I finally have my gear dialed in. Based on the weather anticipated I have the gear to ensure an awesome time in the back country. Envious that this was a work trip!

Say a little thanks to Gudy Gaskell whose hard work, determination and persistence brought the Colorado Trail to life. It was her dream. I hiked those years that she was lobbing for trail funds, pestering politicianss and government officals to make her dream come true. She is smiling down on you guys taking in the wonders of the trail. It is a spiritual experience.

Great video guys! I hiked the CT in 2022. From Denver to Durango took me 21 days with a 4 day break in Salida for my dad's 80th. It rained on me almost every day which kept the temperature much more comfortable for me. Good luck next year on your second section.

The big pack part was crazy but that was definitely me for a few years in my hiking career! Now, I cut almost everything I don't use. I try to get rid of cases and put stuff into lighter bags. I even downgraded from a huge camera to a GoPro to cut weight. The GoPro does more than the big camera did anyways. Great video! Lot's of fun!

Yes for those long trails it is a Godsend. The social aspect of it is great when you are wondering about water sources and people post what it’s like recently. Also, the elevation views are helpful, but sometimes discouraging. A far cry from the old green maps we used to use.

    • @TaysonWhittaker

Thanks! Pack base weight was around 10-12 lbs plus food and and water. So day 1 most of us were about 18-20 lbs and the last day closer to 10-12. The shirts/ hoodies are the OV altitude sun shirts!
