- Damascus Governor Marwan, appointed by the new administration established after the overthrow of the Baath regime, evaluated the problems in the capital and the steps that need to be taken to an AA correspondent.
Marwan made the following assessment: "First of all, it is necessary to rebuild trust because there is a huge gap between the public and state institutions. There are general and specific problems. We must strengthen the trust between public institutions and the public."
Stating that they will work to re-establish this trust, Marwan said, "We need to increase supervision and competence. We need to improve living standards in our province."
The Governor of Damascus, who emphasized that they attach importance to increasing the salaries of public employees and workers, encouraging local investments and providing basic services to the public with modern methods, said, "We must provide facilities to attract local and foreign investors, merchants and industrialists here. We must provide employment opportunities for young people in Damascus and other provinces. We will solve the fuel problem soon. We want to provide services worldwide by integrating technology in our institutions."
Marwan noted that they were carrying out work in many areas such as improving the electrical infrastructure, cleaning the streets, and park and urban planning.
Pointing out that cooperation between the Ministries of Economy, Trade and Industry is also important in the implementation of infrastructure and investment projects, Marwan said, "We had local industries that left the country due to the pressures of the old regime. We want investors to come to Damascus and Syria."
The Governor of Damascus underlined that they attach great importance to young people in the country and said, "Young people, who are the architects of the future, will take Syria to a higher level."
Marwan stated that they prioritized the return of employees in government offices and public service institutions to their jobs, saying, "Another priority was to increase salaries because salaries were very low and there was corruption in many places. We are currently evaluating the needs of public institutions. Salaries could be increased by 400 percent next month. Civil servant salaries were between $15-20, very low."
Drawing attention to the economic and social differences between Damascus and Idlib, Mervan said, "We did not only work in the military field in Idlib, but also many institutions operated in the political, military, social, economic and service fields."
The governor stated that the new administration is working in all areas to return life to normal in all provinces and said, "We are now drawing a path that will determine the future. Plans are being made for every ministry and institution to get back on its feet with the transition period."
Marwan, who stated that the social integration and harmony increased after the liberation of Syria, said, "Syria used to be a mosaic, but the previous regime tried to divide it and spread sectarianism and discrimination. We are working to restore Syria to its former state. Everyone is very happy about this victory as if they have achieved it themselves."
Marwan, who said that the issue of social freedoms is dependent on the law and the constitution, said, "In the coming period, progress will be made in this regard. Women, men, various religious and ethnic groups, everyone now has equal rights. We are in a period where there is no discrimination."
Evaluating Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's visit to Damascus, Mervan said that the visit strengthened the future perspective of the two brotherly peoples.
The Governor of Damascus said, "The Syrian and Turkish people are brothers, they have been one heart since the revolution. The Turkish people have given great support to the Syrian people, we will never forget this. Turkey is a strategic ally for us in social, cultural, economic and military terms. They are in cooperation with the current administration."
