In Southend, they still had original Victorian gas lamps as far back as the last couple of years, which have unfortunately been ripped out and replaced with characterless black columns
If it makes you a bit happier, Zagreb never electrified the lighting in the city center. There's two people who light the gas lamps every evening and shut them off at sunrise. Technically they were phased out when WW2 started, but about 40 of them were never removed and are still in use today (installed in 1863, they're quite old). In 1987 they added about 200 more as part of the program to restore the old Austro-Hungarian look of the city.
I'm from Southend too. All the way up to Bournes Green those new black ones. Thorpe Bay not got none and nor has Shoeburyness apart from a few near East Beach.
In the early to mid 2020’s, people long for the yesteryear of the 1950’s through 1980’s, which seemed to be good times when life was less complicated than it is in the 2020’s!
Lol what a fantasy world, the era of gaslights was not a leisurely time, people were working themselves finger to bone doing 12-15 hour days, and the fairy tale references, those gas lights would have made the streets pre-1960s extremely dark and dangerous. There’s a reason Jack the Ripper operated in poorly lit areas at night, I’m just saying.
He operated in an alleyway. Mantle burning gas lights (from the research I’ve done), burn about as bright as a sodium vapor street lamp (the kind used before LED’s.) The “open flame” type however was very dim. Significantly dimmer when used with natural gas instead of coal gas…
The reason within is the reason we race ism not knowing who to hop with both ways will still be in ru not knowing is in..confuse when all are welcum from worst to worst... i side King mentality! You command all from high low!!😂
Breaks my heart to see those old lamps gutted and electrified. 😟🥺

It's so weird that my father was 11 years old when they still taking down Victorian street lighting.
Ah, the good old days when wooden crates and wood shavings were used for shipping items.

The center of my city never electrified. I agree, the lights are very dim, on clear nights the moonlight provides more light.

No face mask so the old guy grinding the copper lamp is breathing in Copper Oxide and most likely Lead paint.
Indeed but now there are muppets wearing face nappies for paranoia
Lungs were stronger back then
“We’re intruders” hmm 🤔
