i love it how us New Zealanders perform like that whenever a famous person comes over here and the first thing that they see is how welcoming we are and OH MY GOD I LOVED HOW THEY SUNG HER SONG IN TE REO it was so heartwarming
It's also not just the two people greeting, but also your ancestors greeting each other too since there's the belief (from what I've been told) your ancestors stand on your shoulders
Ashley Conner just like Hawaiians and their Hā. Both people hold each other’s neck, as each part of your spine is your ancestor holding you up, and you connect your ancestors with theirs; becoming one
I guess there’s probably different milestones in a singers career where they’re like ‘shit I’ve made it’ - obviously getting a number 1 or selling a tour out etc. But when you go somewhere really far from home, and see how your success has permeated different countries and cultures - it must be hard not to proud of how far your success has reached. Especially for a 17 year old to go half way around the world and be so graciously welcomed with her own song. My heart. 🥰
I used to work at the airport in Auckland and would witness this first hand . Not always for stars but for family . It would send shivers up my spine and overcome me - I’d have to turn away from the customers I’d be serving and wipe the tears. The power of listening and being present is like nothing else . Proud of New Zealand 🇳🇿

That shows what a well mannered nation can do for you as a welcome, the world needs to learn from this... FOR REAL! this gave me chills all the way down my spin, so powerful and respectful wow! NZ you are something else on this planet!
Glad Billie got to experience that, how special!!!! I cried when I saw her hug the group, such a sweet thing for a celebrity to do!!! Shes refreshing different. Hope she keeps that wonder in her and doesn't let the industry change her. I'm 61 and a fan, would so enjoy a conversation with her.
If it only happens to famous people, I doubt it's sincere. This kinda thing should only be done by people relevant to the welcomed person, not by a group of actors. It just means more when you know the people. Like when I visit my Marae with my family, we are welcomed onto the Marae with a traditional powhiri, usually done for important occasions like funerals and homecomings of hero's etc. This doesn't seem as sincere to me, just paid up and fame farming.
omg how the hell did these people plan this for her once she gets off a flight? so heartwarming ugh what a cutie swaying back and forth all sappy and shit i wanna die and hug her
This is SO so sweet, wish Australia (where I’m from) had preserved the Aboriginal culture and put together something like this for her...but, we killed most of them off and made them slaves, while the New Zealanders respected them. This was so beautiful. I would have cried.
We’ve come a long way in New Zealand. Respect to the fellow kiwis for the change. We are shit in alot but Māori are resilient and proud. They almost succeeded in killing off the culture but we rose up to the challenge and are trying ever so hard to preserve our language and culture in a ever so fast changing world of NZ.
