    Full commemoration: • Battle of Vimy Ridge 1...
    "Just days after wrapping up her 24-date A Trio Performance tour across the E.U. and U.K., Loreena will join other performers and dignitaries at the commemorative ceremony to be held at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France. The event marks the 100th anniversary of the historic Battle of Vimy Ridge and will include numerous heads of state, members of the royal family, military officials and tens of thousands of civilians.
    “It is an incredible honour to be a part of this important ceremony,” says Loreena, who is also the Honorary Colonel of the Royal Canadian Air Force and an active supporter of the broader Canadian forces community and their families. “I expect we will all be extremely moved by the resonance of what that battle meant to Canada and the scale of human loss involved.”
    Loreena will perform one song during the ceremony, “Dante’s Prayer,” from The Book of Secrets, her sixth studio album and a worldwide chart success. She will be accompanied by fellow musicians Brian Hughes on guitar, Hugh Marsh on violin and Caroline Lavelle on cello.
    The First World War victory at Vimy Ridge was a defining moment for Canada and it was the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces fought together. But the history-making battle came at great cost. More than 10,000 troops were killed and wounded. The Canadian National Vimy Memorial honours all Canadians who died in the war. It sits on the highest point of Vimy Ridge, was designed by Canadian Walter Seymour Allward, and it took 11 years to build.
    As many of you may already know, Loreena was appointed in 2013 to the rank of Knight of the National Order of Arts and Letters by the Republic of France."

    I was drafted in June 1972. in the summer of 1973 I was in physical therapy for a knee injury. there were two POWs from Nam there. we were not allowed to talk to them. they were ghosts, a shell of their former selves and I thought they would never again regain a normal life. to all the men and women who sacrificed their lives, their livelihood, thank you, for giving us the privilege of living in America. you will NEVER be forgotten. Gerry Owen!

    I was at the ceremony...beautiful, no clouds...surrounded by 25,000 of my close personal friends. An already emotional day was put into a warm embrace from Loreena and her amazing band. As they played, I looked all around, but focusing on the Ridge. The sound was perfect there...in a crowd of 25,000, all were entranced. It was magical.

      I have that stipulated in the instructions for my funeral. As I live in Spain and will die here, I want her Spanish rendition played as all my friends here are Spanish. OK, I know it is not the literal translation but it is just as haunting.

    If anything they should have been showing all the young Canadians standing and sitting out there. All of them there for remembering the young men who died taking the Ridge, instead of that awkward dance. I was there at the back, balling my eyes out like a baby when she sang this, sun coming through the memorial perfectly. It was so beautiful.

      If you ever get over there, please visit the cemetery, where you will see that the average age of those killed was probably about 22. The dancers perfectly exhibit the horrible loss incurred during the battle. Both my grandfathers fought at Vimy, and they were 21 and 22. It was a great victory, but the losses were terrible.

  • @jimhoover9819
    @jimhoover9819 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Very disappointing the comments made about the dancers. The dance adds and does not take away from the song. Both my grandfathers fought at Vimy and they were in their early 20's. The dance is very fitting when you consider the 3600 young lives lost during the battle, and the other 60,000 Canadian lives lost during the war. If you ever get there, be sure to visit the cemetery, and you will think twice about this dance.
    And for you fellow Canadians, here is the final paragraph from Tim Cook's book titled Vimy - To stand on Vimy Ridge in the shadow of the memorial is to recognize that few other places in the world can make Canadians feel so proud. One also feels the weight of history and the presence of the dead. There is a palpable confluence of what we would like to forget and what we must remember. The ghosts walk this soil, as they did in Allward’s dream, through the claustrophobic tunnels, treading carefully across the cratered battlegrounds, and with the faint touch of fingers on engraved names of the fallen. Vimy is also a place of enormous beauty. The pylons soar to the blue beyond, and the sculptures are intricate in their lines and evocative in their meanings. The creamy white and warm stone provokes strong emotion. The historical inscriptions are minimal, but the names of the missing 11,285 are monumental. Those searing marks in honour of the fallen are thousands of small scars on the stone, a reminder of the terrible loss and grief of the Great War. Tears come easily while standing on the memorial. These are not tears of uncontrollable grief but tears of something else, something more profound. They are the tears invoked by the memory of a grandfather, by a few lines from McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields”, and even by a surprising flash of patriotism. There is a power in the Vimy legend - the ridge, the memorial, the meaning - that is not easily put into words. The memorial is for the dead, but it is remade generation after generation by the living. Canada was indeed forever changed by the Great War, but Vimy did not make the nation. It was the nation that made Vimy.

    Omg! Who made the decision to kill the moments of respect with those scruffy morons cavorting like jesters in the foreground? Disrespectful in the extreme. LMk and her support were grace and beauty. As always.

      Meredith - The dancers perfectly depict the young age of the 3,600 Canadians killed in that 4 day battle. My own grandfathers were 21 and 22 and both were in the battle. No disrespect at all, just a very good reminder of the horrible cost of war.

      Thank you for saying that, and their weird dancing does nothing to respect or enhance the beautiful song either.

    Great song and performance!1 problem: what heck are those two doing in front of the stage??That dance (if we can call it that) is not only unnecessary but distracts and takes away from the beauty of the songAnd somebody give the male dancer some coffee, this dude looks he just rolled out of bed XD

      Teddy Junior I agree wholeheartedly. How about putting a Color Guard up there to honor their fallen!

      Exactly, a Color Guard would have been a nice touch

      When you realize that the average age of the 3,600 who died at Vimy during the battle were probably in their early 20's, I think that the pair who are dancing adds a very special and appropriate compliment to this beautiful song.

    Don’t need the dancer. It distracts from the beauty of the song. Why is it when there’s already perfection someone decides that more is better. It’s not.
