    Expensive cars are expensive to maintain. Congratulations on that insight. The Porsche car is usually a second car and will probably be driven less than 5K per year. Oil change each year and it’s done. If you want a cheap car with cheap maintenance, you can buy less complex, often times, less fun cars. It’s a trade off and you need to do buy what fits your needs.

  • @drunvert
    @drunvert ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Porsches are expensive to maintain because people stick to the maintenance schedule and go to the dealer for everything to keep the value of their car up. If you buy a used Porsche and do not use the dealer, you can save ton of money and the cars are built really well. Except for some of the plastic parts like window switches that they use to save weight

    I just bought my second new car in the past 30 years. It is one of those high end European. I had bought a Lexus on impulse a year ago, which I regretted. I got it for the long-term reliability but the fact is I have never kept a car for that long. Up until last year I leased. For me, leasing is the way to go. Then as long as the car is still under warranty, I don’t have to worry about it. I do the minimum maintenance required (which is not everything on the maintenance schedule) and turn the sucker in. I MIGHT do that with this car…turn it in and eat the depreciation and go back to leasing. Whatever way I go, I can afford many of these cars and I do NOT care.

    Throughout my life I have always been fortunate to have newer premium brand cars. I haven't had many in that I kept my Volvo GLE 740 for 27 years, But then things changed, I had a Volvo 240 turbo which started to cost money straight out of the dealers and it only lasted me 4 months and it was done. I made a deal to get out of it and into a Volvo XC90 which had 3 new engines within 4 years. Enough of that I drove of the lot with a Mercedes ML350 diesel which was awesome car... until it started to have an electrical problem. 6 dealer visits and $6000 later they still couldn't find out what was wrong. Again enough! I drove off the dealers lot with a used mint condition Ford Escape, 5 years on I have replaced the original battery, had oil changes and air filters etc and new winter and summer tires. It's going to be driven a long time into the future whilst it's the least expensive and reliable car I've had to date in many years. It's neither premium or pretentious and doesn't attract attention, but still gets me from a to b with greater economy and fewer headaches.

    As much as the Q5 gets hammered on for reliability and maintenance, i calculated all the maintenance costs i had over 10 years of actual ownership of my 2013. The total 10 year cost came in at $4937. That included the $600 service i did on the ZF transmission 2 years ago, oem fluid/filter/gasket. I did all of the maintenance myself, except for the new tires and the water pump that was replaced by the dealer in 2019. It was an expensive item, but i got a 2018 Q5 loaner for 5 days included........and i learned that i didnt like the newer ones at all. Comfortable and nice interior, but the new 7 speed double clutch trans was jerky, and all of the exterior sensor alarms were driving me nuts going in and out of the garage. I only have about 85k on my 2013, and i am gonna keep it a bit longer since its still running so good.

    Curious, what is your thoughts on a 2014 or 2015 BMW 640i when it comes to the long haul (10+ years)? I work remote so not a lot of driving except when I need to visit the office (350 mile round trip) every few months or quarterly. I believe these year models uses the N55B30 engine? How well do they hold up?

    • @BrainFuck10
      @BrainFuck10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They hold up well but forget about the 6 Series, they're over priced & over compromised, not very sporty and not very comfortable or practical either. Get a 2017-18 540i instead, same price range but more modern, more comfortable/practical, better mpg and better performance because 2017+ 540i's use the B58 which is basically an upgraded N55, a more durable and more efficient motor.
