Legend has it that the Jade Rabbit was originally an ordinary rabbit. When the three gods turned into beggars and begged animals for food, only the Jade Rabbit offered itself and was willing to be cooked. The gods were moved and took the Jade Rabbit to the Moon Palace, letting it accompany Chang'e and giving it the task of making medicine. According to legend, the Mid-Autumn Festival is the day when Chang'e flies to the Moon Palace. That day happens to be the Mid-Autumn Festival (August 15th in the lunar calendar, which is September 17th this year)
