  • A tour of the pubs of St Albans featuring special guest ‪@WC21UKProductionsLtd‬.
    We also made a video about the Roman history of St Albans / Verulamium earlier in the day, and you can see that over on WC21's channel: • Tweedy’s Roman Verulamium
    Today's pub tour includes the usual mix of pub exteriors and interiors, history and other random miscellany. Touching on whether Ye Olde Fighting Cocks really is the oldest pub in England, a quick look at the work of one time St Albans resident impressionist George Clausen, a possible last chance to use the outdoor toilets at the Farriers Arms, some discussion of where the common inn name "White Hart" comes from, and finally Hogarth's portrait of Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat.
    Pubs featured:

    White Hart: whatpub.com/pubs/SHE/724/whit...
    Thanks to the St Albans and Hertfordshire Architectural and Archaeological Society for this article on the history of the Fighting Cocks:

    I’m really delighted the ‘collab’ seems to have been well received on both WC21 (UK) Productions Ltd and Tweedy Pubs. Thanks to everyone for watching, liking, commenting and subscribing.
    A massive thanks to Tweedy - without whom, none of this would have been possible. I am so impressed with the video Tweedy produced. He approaches this in a very different way to me and it was at times a surprise to discover we were filming. I have very much enjoyed watching the spontaneity arising from this. Oh, and I love the shot of me filming, whilst unscrewing a vape bottle - as if that’s an essential part of the recording process. It is.
    Likewise, I felt Tweedy quickly adjusted to the style of WC21 and delivered a stellar performance there. His ‘can-do’ approach led to far less retakes than usual. Perhaps I shouldn’t be so pedantic moving forward.
    So much great feedback in the comments. I particularly enjoyed this by boris100ish: “both honest and refreshing TH-cam content”. That hits the nail on the head for me. There’s a lot of content on here that seems to follow formulas and trends, whereas I make videos that I would want to watch and I suspect Tweedy does the same. I just love watching videos with me in them, to be brutally frank.
    It was a great experience and a lot of fun. Tweedy has commented on the slightly surreal experience of coming round a corner in a pub and thinking, “oh it’s that bloke I watch on TH-cam” and I had the same when recording Tweedy ‘piloting’ the fake drone - which you’ll note he reinterprets as a javelin-style weapon.
    When I’m out filming on my own there are typically unanticipated disasters. This occurred on Tweedy’s Roman Verulamium. I tried to pilot fake drone v.2 through the hole in the Roman wall. Unbeknownst to me, it obviously has a sensor that makes it land if it comes close to a surface. Accordingly it landed in said hole, resulting in me having to climb over the old school Ministry of Works railings to retrieve it. Thankfully Tweedy was there to provide a steadying hand and thus, an impaling was avoided.
    Tweedy and I had not met before and only knew each other from comments on TH-cam videos. We had a good day chatting about all manner of things, drinking some beer and having a meal. Somehow we managed to pull 2 videos out of this.
    Any TH-camrs out there considering a collaboration should give it a go. It brings another dimension to this most peculiar of hobbies.

      @TweedyPubs  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Likewise Mr WC21! It was a splendid day out and a fascinating insight behind the scenes of another TH-camr whose work I admire.
      The shot of you filming with the vape bottle reminded me of Hannibal from the A-Team, and thus it seemed too good to just sit unseen on a hard drive. Of course neither vapes nor mobile phones had been invented back then, but perhaps it was the grin?

      St Albans has the most pubs in England for the population.
      There is locals that says Ye Old Fighting Cocks was built on the sight of the the original pub that served the builders of the Cathedral.

    I’ve only been to England once about a year ago. Your videos have given cause to start planning another visit. The “third space” aspect of pubs is masterfully captured in your content and I find that to be the most envious part of pub culture as I am in the US and our bars, taprooms, and breweries are overly sanitized.
    Cheers!

    • @TweedyPubs
      @TweedyPubs  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you Marcus for that great comment, I'm really pleased the videos have shown the pubs in that light, and have provided inspiration for you to travel! In fairness we certainly have our share of overly sanitised drinking establishments as well, but I try to avoid those places and seek out pubs with character, history, or just places which feel homely and welcoming - and that's what this channel is all about!

    Loved the outside toilets. Pubs in Ireland in the rural areas paid little attention to toilets years ago and ladies' toilets were often absent. In the 1950s my mother found this out and after protest was allowed use a chamber pot upstairs. An uncle once making use of an 'open air' toilet which was a yard with a drain, heard a feminine voice comment on how lovely the stars were and looked down to see a lady squatting beside him.

    A very interesting visit Tweedy. It's always nice to visit pubs with a fellow enthusiast. I once drove cross country to St Albans specifically to visit The Fighting Cocks and left the missus to visit the shops. It is a very nice pub and you each had a favourite beer of mine with the Adnams Broadside and Mighty Oak Old Man of the Sea. The Mighty Oak brewery, from Maldon in Essex, produce some fabulous beers and they are also very popular here in Suffolk. I once visited The Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham which also laid claim to be the oldest.

      We didn't talk so much about the beer in the subsequent pubs as a lot of it was quite grapefruity, unfortunately.

      Thanks JohnRob! I'm glad the interactions between me and Mr WC21 came across favourably in the final video. For at least some of the bits where we were talking we just left the camera running and practically forgot it was there, and it was a fairly genuine slice of two middle aged men down the pub talking about history... It was a very fun day out and hopefully more collaborations like this to follow!

    Another great pub guide @TweedyPubs . If you ever go to Yorkshire I would love to see a Tweedy pubs tour of York or Hull, both of which have a great variety of great old pubs (especially Hull old town) which would probably be of interest to your good self. I give Hull a special mention there only because York is an obvious place where many an old pub resides and of which you would know doubt be aware, but many do overlook Hull old town but are pleasantly surprised when they visit it.

    The name White Hart, refers to an albino Fallow Deer, which were introduced into this country either by the Romans or Normans. I think the word Hart in old English, means hard, probably because albino deer are so rare, and hard to find, back in the days when our forests were huge.

      Yes this was a fun day out! To my surprise, my favourite pub of the day might actually have been the White Hart Hotel. It surprised me because normally hotel leaning pubs are a bit pretentious and not very pubby, and I would have thought that to be doubly the case in a very middle class commuter town like St. Albans... But perhaps in part because I was there with Mr WC21 and we were delving into its history I really got a strong sense of the atmosphere of the old coaching inn. Or maybe it was just that it was the last pub of the day and I was quite jolly by then!

      Mr WC21 is the only one of the two of us who is properly focused on the details when it comes to clothing - I tend to treat tweed suits like work overalls, and I am actually pretty sloppy when it comes to things like neckwear.
