In Oil circuit breakers, insulating oil such as transformer oil is used as the arc quenching medium. An arc is formed between the contacts when they are opened under oil. The arc's heat evaporates the surrounding oil, forming a large volume of gaseous hydrogen at high pressure. The volume of hydrogen gas is about 1000 times that of decomposed oil. As a result, the oil is pushed away from the arc, and a rapidly expanding hydrogen gas bubble envelops the arc and adjacent contacts. Two processes are primarily required for arc extinction. To begin with, the hydrogen gas having high heat conductivity cools the arc resulting in the de-ionization of the medium between the contacts. Secondly, the gas causes turbulence in the oil forcing it into the gap between contacts which in turn leads to the effective removal of arcing products from the arc path. As a result, the arc is put out and the circuit current is interrupted

When oil burns, it produces hydrogen gas which has 1000 times volume than oil. Due to this, arc is extinguished

This gas causes the pressure inside the arc control device of ocb. Then arc pushed to side vent where it get enlongating and then get extinguished.
