My brother-in-law died recently. He was born in Ireland, but came to New Zealand with his family when he was 12 years old.
My 23 year old granddaughter said she'd like to sing at funeral. She found this song, The Parting Glass, learnt it in a few days, and sang it fantastically at the funeral.
I’m so sorry for your loss.
So sorry. What a beautiful granddaughter
Very appropiate song
❤❤❤❤❤❤
The Irish are born to sing and they do it so well.
And they speak like a song
not for nothing, but even though the song is well-known in Ireland, it's a Scottish song by origin
@@steray8112😢😢
I'm sort of Irish. My friend had died recently and this song was played at his wake. We all had a shot of whiskey and smoked cigars. He was given a proper send off.
You are either Irish or you're not, no 'sort of'!
Ken Curran: Music can work the Most wonderful things…
I'm sorry for your loss may your friend rest in peace love from Ireland 🇮🇪
Are you part of the Irish diaspora? Irish American, for example, as am I?
Are you listening. Your most Irish than most.
My old Dad was born in Wexford, 1911. He loved this song and sang it at many family 'Get togethers' . He sadly passed 40 years ago, here in Australia, but every birthday we play this for him.

Darn, you old
What a great tribute may the breezes of Moreton Bay, the fierce Tasman sea, and every body of water in Oz know his spirit.
Well done, beautiful song.
Our family are from Wexford too. Beautiful song!
Mark Waters has one of the most honest voices I've ever heard.
Wonderful description David
I agree wholeheartedly!
Definitely. A crisp tenor
Exactly
Why does this make PERFECT sense?
He is from Wexford in Ireland. He sings in his natural accent, which is fitting in this song. Glad you find it interesting. Enjoy!
Choral Scholars of University College Dublin tis the official lyrics now i need

Beautiful rendition. Thank you.
Choral Scholars of University College Dublin thank you for taking me on this journey ... I love it
Just came from living on the Lakota Reservation in South Dakota. When I heard the Lakota songs and sang along to simple one, I felt a connection with the earth. We need to know the real history of how we were derooted and recover our roots. This is special.
This is by far my favorite version of "Parting Glass".Everyone sings beautifully but there is a quality to Mark's voice that is so appealing to the ear and to the heart as well
Das finde ich auch. Eine wundervolle Stimme und ich höre das Stück oft.
My big sister, Judy, passed a couple of days ago, this is the one I will post on FB. Many thanks..
This made me tear up. English is not my native tongue, but the feeling in the singing and choir made me think of friends I've lost and reminded me of how short life is. You should tell your friend how you fell about him/her. Life is a precious and delicate thing we take for granted :hearts:
Not enough credit is sent to Kevin Whyms for the absolutely brilliant sound recording. Getting this kind of full sound takes some serious thinking and experience in everything from choosing microphones and placement to the post-production. My deepest respect, sir.
Thinking of Donegal and this helps
The line "That I should rise and you shall not" gets me in the feels every time.
It’s not about death
he diddnt say it was 🤣
same here it expresses a fundamental truth
Been watching this for the better part of 7 years, such a great performance
Me too
My goodness that young lad hits all right notes I just keep putting it on replay. It’s so beautiful!!!!! 🌎⭐️❤
it just broke a Million when I clicked on it, congratulations!
Its okay to love your land.
And to love your heritage.
And to love your nationality.
And to love your people.
No matter where you are from.
They do a outstanding job on "Mo Ghille Mear"
I just bought the album, they are GOOD.
Came here from that too
Yes they do! Amazing
That song is what got me hooked on these singers. I still consider it one of my absolute favorite songs
definately!!!
I must have fallen asleep for a long time. Now they are 3.2 million viewers. GREAT.
Today, for the first time, heard this number, ten years too late. Lot's of love from the Netherlands
I just heard this song for the first time today on a re-run of the Australian TV show "Rake" and found this version. I am sitting her blubbering like a baby at the simplicity and beauty of this classic song. My sincerest compliments to the singers and the director of this group.
Thanks so much Bob for your kind words.
Agreed! You may also wish to listen to the Choir's recording/video of Orphan Girl. A beautiful heart rending tale of the thousands of young cailins whose fate was to travel from Ireland to Australia to begin a new life. Beautiful choral work and unmatched solo by mezzo Abby Molloy.
the lead singers voice = Angelic
Yep.
Thanks!
In loving memory of my Brother. Rest In Peace wherever you are now.
Sang this for my father at his wake (body still in the room where he passed away) with only the immediate family & 1 older lovely Irish friend home. I'd played this video for him months before and he proclaimed "you can sing this; referring to my vocal register & encouraged me to learn it. He was 85 & we never once had a drink together & I finally did while we trusted that he was still in the room with us lingering. He knew that I would "kill to have this sweet tenor's voice." Good bless us all including the UCD Scholars.
I won't tell you where I 'came here from...', instead I'll tell you how wonderful this song is.
Assassin creed Black flag?;)
I come back here from time to time since 2013, because of the beauty herein. French friendship an admiration to you all.
That young man has a voice of gold. What a treasure... Goodness gracious.
I'm not ashamed to say that I wept on hearing this. In memory of my father: William John Gunning Crawford. A man that I wish I'd known better...
Never be ashamed. Everytime I listen to this Choir, I cry. I'm 6'5 and 225 lbs. For some reason, Irish music touches my soul and brings me to tears.
This is why the world loves the Irish.
Thank you for the wonderful song. I miss hearing my daughter sing in her collage choir. God bless you all, from Northeast Tennessee, America.🖋
A stunning combination of a relatively colloquially sung lead and a perfect choral backing. Never heard anything like it. Absolutely tremendous.
This man singing the best out of all the versions I heard
The woman at 0:58 who has the solo going through 1:10 has an utterly gorgeous tone!!
Sopranoe's voice is perfect here
Smoother than glass...absolutely beautiful.
Absolutely!! But Emily Doyle's tone is not all that's utterly gorgeous. Wow!
The red headed boy next to the brunette in the Sylvester shirt looks like he’s about to cry and I can’t blame him. Tearing up me self here.
Our people are beautiful and have hearts of gallantry when needed , we find joy when left at peace
For the first time, I see how every member of the choir is important to make such a beautiful song. I put your music on when I’m in the house or workshop when I’m by myself, and there is such peace.
Beautiful just beautiful
This guy has the voice of an angel.
Can't understand all those who don't like it! He sings this song as it should be sung... From the heart. With all the deep feelings, a song like this and the lyrics afford! Thanx for it to all, who performed it so beautifully. And to Mister Waters. You, young man, are a extraordinary singer! Stay on this road. Bring happiness or deep feelings to the people in the world. Whether they like. For me... Well, I I hope a friend of mine keeps the promise and this song in exactly this version is gonna be played at my funeral
There aren't many songs that make me cry, this song touches my heart.
A Brit crying for the atrocities i did in NI.God have mercy on my soul.
love you all in Ireland and Scotland from Texas USA
Same here!
I'm absolutely addicted to this song. Mark Waters is amazing!
Same here!
Slaínte! 🍻💚📿
Thanks!
Listened to this after the Nova Scotia shootings yesterday... Goodnight, and joy be with you all. Beautiful version, thank you.
This is forever
I have to listen to this at least once a week because it helps my heart
I could listen to this beautiful performance 1,000 times in a row. Perfection.
So near to the million just now
Within our family it is sung at funerals and Danny boy ... when ever I hear it I am moved! ☘️☘️☘️☘️
I cant find the words but Mark Waters voice touch my heart.
I've listened to scores of different versions of this song. IMHO, this is the by far THE ULTIMATE version. Well done !

Brilliant, well over a million now for this great choir
you would never know, could go to 2 million, but I will not be around
John O'Connor where you off to?
just love this choir, these great singers, all of them
I wish I could like this again each time I listen to it... 💚
Why am I crying? So incredibly beautiful and the very best rendition via Choral Scholars of the University of Dublin!
Finishing the decade with this. Seemed perfect for the occasion.
i stream tis video since 8 years and i gaot goosebumbs everytime
I've listened to this version of Parting Glass dozens of times, which let me to the other videos you posted, which led me to lots of other songs in Irish, which is why I decided to learn Irish, like seriously, I'm taking notes and things. And I'm not even a Caucasian with Irish heritage, I'm a pure Chinese...
Good for you I hope it takes you on new journeys to Ireland.
The modulation in this arrangement is amazing!
+Passive Thanks so much. This track is available on pre-release now on our new CD 'Invisible Stars' - itun.es/i6SR2p8 #iTunes
Listened many times, words fail me to say what it does to me.
The soprano is unbelievable, from another reality. Beauty descended.
You all sing from the heart, it makes this music food for the soul.
Thank you.

+UCD Choral Scholars that how I found this song
Emily Doyle I believe.
This is so beautiful and warm.
I'm nearer the end than the beginning, I have seen much sorry, I have tears I my eyes, peace and love to you all.
Mark Waters, a most beautiful voice. My favourite recording.❤❤
In every choirs lifetime there is the rare occasion that everything fits into place perfectly- this is one of those times. I personally don't believe it would be possible for them to have performed it better.
Cheers for the very sound comment Aikido...
That is one of the most endearing performances of this song I have encountered.
enchanting heavenly voices ans faces .every time im listening to music i play this song twice and today was happy to read the lyrics so touching and inspiring. i happen to love everything abou Ireland and its people.love from a syrian granny😊
Cheers to the UCD Choral Scholars for having one of the most delightful versions of this classic traditional song. I spent my entire school period in a cappella choirs, and appreciate what they've accomplished (along with their director). Slainte!
+Ellen Hilts-Gossett Thanks so much. This track is available on pre-release now on our new CD 'Invisible Stars' - itun.es/i6SR2p8 #iTunes
UCD Choral Scholars Thank you for the link. I definitely want more!
Cheers with Tullamore Dew whiskey. Beautiful song
I am so moved by this singing - soloist and choir - that I keep coming back to it. It touches my soul.
There is nothing better than a beautiful song well sung. Thank you UCD Choral Scholars.
I said a long time ago when I first heard this lad singing "The Parting Glass" that he sings it perfectly, he does sing it perfectly. He has a sweet and pure voice. Would love to hear him sing more songs.
+John O'Connor Thanks so much. This track is available on pre-release now on our new CD 'Invisible Stars' - itun.es/i6SR2p8 #iTunes
I just found it is free to stream with my Amazon Prime. The first song Mo Ghile Mear is one of my favorite songs and the young man does it magnificently
Same here, Mo Ghile Mear was I think the first I saw of this man singing.
This always brings a tear to these old eyes. Thank you all for bringing back a song that is a cherished memory from my younger days.
Talented Group
CRYSTAL VOICES.......SMOOTH AS WARM SILK........
My god, I want that lad to sing at my funeral.
So Divine In Every Aspect,
Truly Wonderful Music Indeed.
Beautiful. Brought tears.
I periodically listen to various performances of this beautiful song but there in one I always return to and this is it. It's just perfection. Thank you.
bloody great, these people can sing, what more is to be said!
This is the most beautiful song I have ever heard.
Superb! Crisp polyphony, each part is so clear. The lead singer has a great accent and voice obviously, but the bass and soprano parts are also a real treat.
Absolutely. All parts are well played and add to the whole. They're all a real treat .
I've listened to this off and on for the last few years, it's such a beautiful song and so well sung by the lead singer and the girls and boys in the choir. Thank you.
I'm happy more people are listening to this, but I wish it didn't take a famous TV show or video game for people to find this. Songs like this should be well known, because they have so much substance.
OMG that was the most beautiful song I have ever heard in my entire life.
+Amber Wright : Good on you ! This is comfort and warmth, this is peace and safety and soup on a cold, rainy day as your mom smiles at you and brings you a blanket while you lie on the couch. I have been fixated on this version of this song for over a year now, and it soothes my savage breast and fevered dreams still.
+iamintheburg I've had it on constant repeat since the moment I heard it.
I am so glad to hear it, Amber !!!! The sounds matter and the words touch us, don't they ?
Good night and joy be with youall ...
The song, The Parting Glass, is one of the finest traditional songs out there. This is the finest version I have ever heard of it. Fair play to all involved, the most of which, are of the age where they could have focused on more modern and popularly recognised songs.
God Bless
and success be with you all:)
LYRICS:
Of all the money that e'er I had, I spent it in good company
And of all the harm that e'er I've done, alas it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit, to memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all
Of all the comrades that e'er I had, they're sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They would wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call, "Goodnight and joy be with you all!"
A man may drink and not be drunk, a man may fight and not be slain
A man may court a pretty girl and perhaps be welcomed back again
But since it has so ordered been by a time to rise and a time to fall
Come fill to me the parting glass, good night and joy be with you all
Good night and joy be with you all
Thanks for the lyrics. 😊
Interestingly in the Scottish song "The Barnyards o'Delgaty " :
"Noo, I can drink and no be drunken, I can fecht and no be slain
I can lie wi' anither man's lass and aye be welcome tae my ain"
@@mikegooglemainaccount6854 Only to sleep in the couch, though, more often than not.
PeteVVest thanks
PeteVVest i always had sreams of whiskey by the pogues but now this
There are quite a few videos of people singing this song on TH-cam now but even after years this is still my favorite video of this song.
Tears in my Eyes. Up Ireland
Beautiful! This is what real Irish music sounds like! I've listened to this a hundred times and it takes me to a far away land called Ireland! Wish I was there....from California.
I know how you feel Tom- I attended Loyola in my early years- in the 60's- had a terrific future in front of me- but homesickness for the 4 Green Fields won out! Their CD is fantastic as well
I am absolutely addicted to this. Can there anything be more beautiful than it? They have picked the right song, too, and as a man I can't withstand mentioning the beauty of the women in the choir. Irish women are the most beautiful in the world.
I heard one song where he soloed and came looking for more. We need an album from him - I’m in love with both the voice and that accent!
Happy to see the old folk art and old traditional songs preserved and shared I am so tired of mainstream garbage !!
It was originally written in Scotland, prior to 1605 and was called Armstrong's Goodnight. It was the most popular closing night song or tune in Scotland until Robert Burn's Auld Lang Syne. It is a shared tune of the Irish and Scots, and loved by all.....
Marc Phelan I see why you two like eachother that much xD
Like everything concerning Scottish culture (except the English invented short kilt) it was Irish in origin. Poor Scots they just can’t except this truth.
@@22grena so the Irish invented tarmacadam roads, the tv,the phone, antibiotics, the postage stamp, the industrial steam engine, the rubber tyre, the cycle, the breech loading rifle, the hovercraft, logarithms et al...??....NAW YE DIDNAE....Parting glass is a Scottish song by lineage and culture.Get over it.

I don’t mind sharing with the Scottish. I prefer not to fight family.
Good gosh, I cannot stay away......my tired and sore soul wants the peace and the certainty and the balm of these words.
I've listened to this a hundred times and still am not tired of it! Sounds like music should sound, simple and beautiful in the Irish way. When you do it right,
all you you need is the voices...
I am Irish Newfoundlander I family be in Newfoundland 3 hundred years we speak like Irish in bublin your beautiful singers
I listen to this choir pretty much every time i have a Jameson.
Brilliant!
In these corona times we need something to keep our spirits up.
Something other than doom ( though these lyrics..... ).
Art, expression. I’m just very glad to have found this choir.
And that conductor. 👍
Congratulations to the conductor \ teacher well done
This boy own voice of angel
I looked up Gaelic music and found these guys... I am not disappointed :D
