SO IT WAS EITHER LIEM SWIE KING OR XIANG GUO BAO WHO MUST WIN THIS THIRD SINGLES TO GIVE EITHER TEAM THE UPPERHAND. CHINA AT THE ELEVENTH HOUR HAD MADE A TACTICAL SWITCH WHICH CAUGHT THE INDONESIAN COACHES BY SURPRISED.INSTEAD OF PLAYING HAN JIAN IN THE FIRST SINGLES INSTEAD YANG YANG WAS PROMOTED TO PLAYING FIRST SINGLES AND HAN JIAN HAD TO MAKE WAY.BUT IT PAID OFF IN THE END AS YANG MADE SHORT WORK OF ICUK TO WIN 15-7,15-1. INDONESIA'S GAMBLE ON SWIE KING TO WIN BOTH HIS SINGLES AND DOUBLES MATCHES DID NOT SURPRISE THE CHINESE COACHES ESPECIALLY HOU CHIA CHANG.IN FACT SWIE KING WAS THE ACE IN THE PACK. That year even though Indonesia did regain the Thomas Cup from China winning 3-2 in a thrilling final at the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur but Swie King had lost his singles match to Luan Jin.Just a few months earlier Swie King had also lost to Morten Frost Hansen in the All England final. Two years had gone by and the Indonesian coaches had never been aware that Swie King because of his advanced age was not fit enough to play both in the singles and doubles. But that lesson was not learnt and was repeated in the 1986 Thomas Cup final with China at the Istora Senayan. And the Indonesian coaches should have taken the cue from it as Swie King struggled against Malaysia's Foo Kok Keong in the semifinals.But they never did. Swie King despite his age was forced to play both singles and doubles.Had Indonesia played him only in the doubles the chances of Indonesia retaining the Thomas Cup is bright. But then China's Tian Bing Yi and Li Yong Bo had been in superb form prior to the final winning all their Thomas Cup ties in straight sets.Even a fully fit Swie King with Bobby Ertanto would and could they have won against the high riding Chinese pair?
For his age, Lim played admirably good. It is unthinkable 35 years later that any player can play both single and double within a few hours. Even god gets old.
@@chongminwang of course Lim Swie King was a great player but he was being forced to play both singles and doubles in the 1984 Thomas Cup and the 1986 Thomas Cup both coincidentally against arch rival China.In the former he was successful partnering Eddy Kartono to deliver the winning point and Cup beating Sun Zhian and Tian Bingyi in straight sets although he had lost to Luan Jin in the first singles. But in the latter at Jakarta he lost both his singles and doubles ties being defeated in straight sets.He should have given up the singles tie to Xiang Guo Bao but chose to play on and lost 15-13,15-13.Then he lost partnering Bobby Ertanto also in straight sets 15-12,15-9 thus Indonesia surrendering the Thomas Cup to China. But then Liem Swie King is without one of the three Indonesian all time greats.The other two being Tan Joe Hock and Rudy Hartono. And mind you Swie King was in the Indonesian team that won the Thomas Cup in 1976,1979 and 1984 and was thrice All England champion in 1978,1979 and 1981.
