Maybe if you experienced such yourself, it was only caused by unknown factors, but not really an established fact or knowledge. When I suffered from kidney stone disease I drank coconut water often & never had diarrhea too.

Research the information, It’s not always accurate, As is the case with this video. While most are learning and “prepping”, I’m prepared. I’ve been living off grid in the woods most of my life. Just do some research and fact checking. You can punch a hole in any tree and get sap/water, or pitch. It may be from a maple or birch, but that doesn’t mean it’s good to drink as a replacement for water. The sugar content alone will only make you more thirsty. Also, depending on when you’re getting the sap, whether there are buds on the trees, and even the individual constitution of the person, you’ll end up with diarrhea after drinking just a few ounces. It takes literally gallons of sap to make quarts of syrup. Even moreso for birch than maple. Just check with people who make syrup, like we do and always have, before you add maple sap to your prep plan.

I think this was the first caveman cody video I saw a couple of months ago. I was going to take a survival training course before this whole coronavirus thing started but now the class has been shut down and I've been referring to youtube videos to learn. I got the desire to learn how to be self sufficient as of October last year and I've been pursuing survival and outdoor skills since then. Thanks for the good advice!

You can also tap hickory & sycamore, although since I am allergic to sycamore, I'm not inclined to drink it. I have made syrup from hickory sap, it has a stronger flavor to it than maple syrup, but it takes a little less sap & it is a little thicker too. And just as an FYI, pure maple syrup helps with prostate problems. You would think that all the boiling breaks down the medicinal properties, it does somewhat, but it retains a lot of them. The sugar in syrup is sucrose, it also contains manganese, zinc, calcium, riboflavin, magnesium, & potassium. Good stuff....
@Dipstick McGillicuddy Really? I've worked in the tree trimming business & have been fine with all tree species except for when I start working with sycamore. This tree gave me asthma attacks when the saw dust started flying & when I was around them in bloom.

I did this to a maple tree to make syrup. It was quite a fun project to do. I never thought about the water being clean drinking water. To me it was a precursor to syrup. Well done here. 🙃

Lots of comments about survival skills, people skills, city skills, urban skills, rural skills ... everyone's experiences are different. I grew up in a small town and was in the Scouts and learned a lot of this stuff outside of the Scouts, on my own, just reading stuff and spending a lot of time in the woods. Most of my friends grew up on farms and just because they were rural doesn't mean they learned anything about woodcraft - they were too busy working on the farm! Like I said, everyone's experiences are different no matter where you grow up.

It's amazing how much a steady, slow drip of water will accumulate, for example a drip of about one drop of water every 5 seconds will fill a 2.5 gallon container in about 12 hours.
Hmmm. Then there's math that gets in the way. One drop every 5 seconds is 12 drops per minute. x 60 minutes = 720 drops an hr. 12 hrs = 8640 drips. There is @ 91,000 drops in a gallon, so your scenario yields less than 1/10th of a gallon.... less than a quart. You certainly aren't going to fill a 2.5 gallon container. Sorry to use facts on you. I know there's a lot of people that like to form opinions without using a single one of them.
@@anonymousstout4759 Not sure what you're even saying. A gallon is a gallon and a drop is a drop. They are both units of measure. We can convert it to metric, but you still have the same volume of water in the same timeframe whether you want to call the amount you've gathered liters or quarts.

Making preposterous claims amd stating something false needs to be called out. Someone setting a tap up and expecting 2.5 gallons in 12 hrs is going to be sorely disappointed. Yes the size of drops can vary, depending mainly on the surface tension of the liquid, but my point was to show how over-fetched the original comment was. Say the drops were twice the size (Not going to happen, but for argument's sake) of what is universally accepted as a drop and he's still way, way off. It would seem YOUR brain power would be better spent actually stating facts and not trying to defend outlandish claims that could ill-advise or harm people.

I didn't realize how this could be something sensational to other people and just reading some of the comments makes me laugh. Where i come from this is common knowledge and people are collecting birch and maple water every spring, and it can even be bought in shops and markets in season. By season i mean early spring, as soon as temperature gets few degrees above 0 Celsius up until tree starts growing buds. After it starts growing buds water is coming out cloudy and then it almost stops, because at that point tree needs it itself more. Hole needs to be plugged after, otherwise it might die. Also i never tend to use same tree year after year, if you do everything correctly it does no damage to tree. There are lot of health benefits drinking this water. And it doesn't give you diarrhea or dehydrate you as some people mentioned. There are even easy ways how to store it for long time, although it's loosing it's health benefits this way it can still be used as refreshing drink months or even years later if prepared properly.
I sympathize with the comments. I had known of this for years and some of these people blew me away with how little they knew. Where do they think maple syrup comes from. A maple fairy? Yea this is a very refreshing drink for me and maybe the only thing i like about living in a marsh.

Your right, I remember watching this fellow in the same video a few years ago...I came across it because I specifically googled how to tap trees for water and his along with a few others popped up.

Lots of comments about survival skills, people skills, city skills, urban skills, rural skills ... everyone's experiences are different. I grew up in a small town and was in the Scouts and learned a lot of this stuff outside of the Scouts, on my own, just reading stuff and spending a lot of time in the woods. Most of my friends grew up on farms and just because they were rural doesn't mean they learned anything about woodcraft - they were too busy working on the farm! Like I said, everyone's experiences are different no matter where you grow up.
You're the first TH-camr I've ever heard doing something like this in tapping tree's for water. As a new subscriber I think that's pretty cool if it's drinkable. Thank you Caveman Cody for sharing this video.

It's amazing how much a steady, slow drip of water will accumulate, for example a drip of about one drop of water every 5 seconds will fill a 2.5 gallon container in about 12 hours.
Hmmm. Then there's math that gets in the way. One drop every 5 seconds is 12 drops per minute. x 60 minutes = 720 drops an hr. 12 hrs = 8640 drips. There is @ 91,000 drops in a gallon, so your scenario yields less than 1/10th of a gallon.... less than a quart. You certainly aren't going to fill a 2.5 gallon container. Sorry to use facts on you. I know there's a lot of people that like to form opinions without using a single one of them.

@@anonymousstout4759 Not sure what you're even saying. A gallon is a gallon and a drop is a drop. They are both units of measure. We can convert it to metric, but you still have the same volume of water in the same timeframe whether you want to call the amount you've gathered liters or quarts.
@Johnny Nemo You seem to miss the point. Sure, the video is about survival. Don't you think factual information would be important in this case? Making preposterous claims amd stating something false needs to be called out. Someone setting a tap up and expecting 2.5 gallons in 12 hrs is going to be sorely disappointed. Yes the size of drops can vary, depending mainly on the surface tension of the liquid, but my point was to show how over-fetched the original comment was. Say the drops were twice the size (Not going to happen, but for argument's sake) of what is universally accepted as a drop and he's still way, way off. It would seem YOUR brain power would be better spent actually stating facts and not trying to defend outlandish claims that could ill-advise or harm people.

I didn't realize how this could be something sensational to other people and just reading some of the comments makes me laugh. Where i come from this is common knowledge and people are collecting birch and maple water every spring, and it can even be bought in shops and markets in season. By season i mean early spring, as soon as temperature gets few degrees above 0 Celsius up until tree starts growing buds. After it starts growing buds water is coming out cloudy and then it almost stops, because at that point tree needs it itself more. Hole needs to be plugged after, otherwise it might die. Also i never tend to use same tree year after year, if you do everything correctly it does no damage to tree. There are lot of health benefits drinking this water. And it doesn't give you diarrhea or dehydrate you as some people mentioned. There are even easy ways how to store it for long time, although it's loosing it's health benefits this way it can still be used as refreshing drink months or even years later if prepared properly.
I sympathize with the comments. I had known of this for years and some of these people blew me away with how little they knew. Where do they think maple syrup comes from. A maple fairy? Yea this is a very refreshing drink for me and maybe the only thing i like about living in a marsh.
@@CavemanCody This all just comes down to a lack of knowledge combined with total ignorance. It's good that there are people around you that have some knowledge about things you don't and it's a perfect opportunity to learn, but instead they choose "the ignorance path" and mock you. Well i guess people don't want to educate themselves, i guess they are happy staying in dark. System has done it's job well. There are lot of misleading information everywhere and it's sad that people can't think for themselves and they can't tell a difference between lie and real.
Good thing that there are people who's still trying to show people some valuable information.

Do not tap a maple. Unless you have pancakes to go with it. If you tap a maple, you're going to be wanting pancakes.
