It depends on your purpose for the tree. Personally I have a couple of different trees, my main tree includes all branches of my family and it public and searchable on Ancestry. I do NOT put anything on that tree that I am relatively confident about. I have other private, unsearchable trees, Some focused on the ancestry of a individual and some focused on the descendants of a couple. But I think most people would suggest your main tree include both maternal and paternal branches and it be as complete as possible. Another word of caution is if you personally know that someone is still living make sure they are checked as living on your tree to keep their information as private as possible.
