    I struggled about which I preferred several years ago! Reasons? Well, I grew up with my teenage years in the "60's" so I am a huge Beatles fan. So, the Casino always had an advantage in my decision making. I did like the extra "bling" of the Sheraton. It is just a beautifully made guitar. The binding on body, f-holes, and neck is perfect. The inlay on the fret board and headstock is, again, beautiful. The neck is one of the fastest I've played. The Casino's neck is good, too, but the Sheraton's clearly faster in my opinion. Plus, you have easier access to the high frets with the Sheraton. The only negative I found with the Sheraton is the headstock is heavy and wants to "dive bomb". That"s just something you deal with. Not a deal breaker. Now the Casino does have that unique P-90 sound. Although not as pretty, it is still a nice looking guitar. I love the lighter weight and it is a very comfortable guitar to just sit on the couch and play acoustically. So, which did I get? Well, I liked each guitar for different reasons. I bought both and have no regrets. They are similar in many ways and yet totally different. Two excellent guitars. Now, if I could only have one? I would have to keep the Casino for its' uniqueness sound wise. This review is very comparable to the feelings I had with these two guitars!

    Jack, I agree with what you say. As with all guitars it is about desired tone for desired sounds, which is why pros have many in their collections. I would say that I preferred the Sheraton as it is very much like the 335 (which as you know is semi-hollow with humbuckers), but I liked the Casino and can see that there could be times when HBs are too much, and acoustic/electro acoustic is too little, so if you like to get the 50s and early 60s electric tones, the Casino is the one. The Sheraton is more of an all-rounder which the 335 was designed to be, so it is all relative as you said.

    Great review and shootout! I bought a Sheraton Pro 2 last year. I wasn't too fazed about the coil-tapping either, but I've come to appreciate the tech and it's actually kinda cool! I use the single coil option on the neck pickup with intense delays or on the bridge pickup for a more twangy garage-punk style. I thought it was gimmicky at first, but now I appreciate it's added versatility. It grew on me!

    Jack, the coil-split feature isn't the only thing that's different about the Sheraton II Pro. Since 2015, Epiphone has really stepped up the build quality of their arch-tops. The construction is 5-ply as opposed to 3-ply and the Pro-buckers blow away the old stock pickups in the Korean version.
    Also, my 2016 (Chinese) Casino makes my Korean one feel like a toy by comparison. It's closer to the Elitist I used to own in terms of build quality. The only caveat is that the modern P90s they're using sound terrible. They're grossly over-wound to like 13k, with 42 gauge wire. I had mine rewound to 7k with 43 awg by Buddha Pickups, and all is right with the world.

      Gibsons are three ply maple/birch/maple. So was the epiphone joe bonomassa es 355 special limited edition. All other epiphone s are five ply maple. The three plys sound way better. All the high end gretsches use the same three ply also.

    I briefly owned a Casino (albeit not a very good one). I had previously owned a Sheraton II (in black) and an Epi ES-335 Pro. Thought the Casino would prove a great way to finally have a bonafide Beatles model (though theirs were all American made). Got it (in natural) in 2018 and swiftly figured out that I didn’t need or want it. Found myself lusting again after the Sheraton and wound up getting another one (in natural) in 2019.
    It still feeds back when you take your hands off it without cutting the volume, but you can play hard rock on it, whereas the Casino is frankly not suited to that genre. Just doesn’t seem to have enough “meat” on it. (Makes me wonder how Sir Paul McCartney did all his White Album gymnastics on his.)

    in listening to you play these two guitars (without watching) there are very obvious tonal differences, even thru a cellphone speaker. tomorrow i shall go somewhere to have another listen on some higher quality speakers. you did give away you choice in the way you described the two guitars. you spoke more of the sound of the casino. of the sheraton you spoke more of the looks, which are more impressive, and the technicalities of pots and pickups. my choices have much more been the result of tone than appearance, so i concur (at first ear-tickle) and would prefer the casino.

    After watching your great reviews, I ended up buying a Sheraton II Pro in a gorgeous red finish. It really looks and sounds awesome. I too mounted some Elixir 0.10 and that was the only thing I did after she came out of her box. It is a magnificent guitar and I'm playing it through a Fender Super Champ. I don't bother that much about the "Pro" options (as you said) and I'm very happy with the tone and playability so far. I tried the Casino at a local shop, and it's a really interesting guitar, but I found this Sheraton superior as regards the built, the tone, versatility in general. Thank you so much for helping me to choose and keep up the outstanding work!

  • @robmillisTW2
    @robmillisTW2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The "New Yorker" pickups that went on the very first Epi Sheratons weren't mini humbuckers, they were single coils and were an Epiphone design prior to the Gibson buy-out. The mini humbucker as we know and love it was developed after the old stock of Epi NY pickups ran out about 1961. You can always spot a NY pickup vs a mini HB as it has mounting blocks at each end rather than a full ring. Well done for highlighting that Epiphone was once among the very best guitar building names in the world; it's such a shame the name to most people now means Gibson's cheap import.

    I enjoyed this comparison video. Felt that the Sheraton had an "appearance" of slightly more quality, or was I taken in by the headstock motif???? Glad to subscribe too!!!

    • @JackFossett
      @JackFossett  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks, appreciate the support! Yes as far as quality goes they're really comparable -- the Sheraton is just more "blingy." Its both frustrating and somewhat liberating to see how close they are as its hard to pick one versus the other, but at the same time you know either will be a good choice.

  • @strengthhonor5056

    Thank you! A great video!
    I prefer the Casino. Every picked note blooms very nicely making every note tone more dynamic. Each note blooms to a colorful, round peak that is noticeably punchy. The Casino makes the Sheraton sound more flat and monotone in comparison. The middle position on the Casino is very special. So much character! It has its own version of quack like a Stratocaster in positions two and four.
    I have an Epiphone White Fang ES-125TDC. I can get an amazing chimey tone out of it. I bought it to replace the 1961 Gibson ES125-TDC that got away in 1979 and which I can no longer afford to replace with a genuine copy. I replaced the White Fang wooden bridge with a floating ABR-1 type bridge that brightened it up a bit (for the better).
    I would love to hear an Epiphone Casino vs. and Epiphone ES125-TDC! I'm very curious about any differences.
    An Epiphone P90 to Epiphone P90 shootout.
    Thank you! A great video!

There is obviously an artists markup on this model so I started looking at the pro and proI II Sharatons. Greetings from great Britain...I've go a Korean made casino with a bigsby.(..its one of those that say custom shop limited edition on the back of the headstock ,although I assume that's a bit of clever marketing. Lol)...i totally agree with you Jack Fossett..its quite simply a brilliant guitar....possibility the best value guitar available ever...try getting any authentic guitar that you're favourite famous guitarist played for this price ..the build quality is as good as it gets...I own USA Gibson and fender and Japanese guitars and its totally equal but costs a fraction of the price...even the epiphone P90 seems as good as the one I have on my les Paul junior....probably if I could fault the casino a bit the pickups can be tend to be a little "Woolly" or "muddy"...but it is a hollow body and EQ sorts that out....and they a bit "hot" .but.....im too lazy to bother fitting replacement ones as i can still work with the ones fitted as it's not like they're terrible or anything....I've never played a epiphone les Paul or sg copy but if they're as good as this they might be worth checking out..I once nearly got a epiphone joe pass signature but got a ibenez George benson GB10SE instead. ..(btw...the GB10SE is basically the same spec as the Japanese GB1O..but made in China and again one hell of a guitar compared to it usa and Japanese equivalent... I reckon you'd love one Jack Fossett ..as it's a bit of a niche guitar you rarely get many players raving and reviewing them)...so there it is a great guitar. ..built without any discernable compromises. .to literally the same spec as a name brand (hells bells a epiphone casino is a "name "brand lol)..and did I mention how well it resonates unplugged? ...love your channel mate...great to see you champion these great guitars...epiphone are seen as the poor relations to Gibson's. ..maybe they are but the casino is in a class of it's own.. .Ive not played a Chinese made one but judging by the Chinese GB10SE I own imagine the Chinese epiphone casino is amazing quality as the older Korean ones...your playing is great too...very very tasteful tunage and tonefull too..the 3 Ts....lol

    Not surprised by your choice at the end. I'd have thought it weird if you went the other way, based on how you played each guitar. Your playing performance connected with the sound of the guitar you chose as your favorite. Now I'm left to decide, does that one sound better or did you make it sound better? It think it's mostly the guitar but you're part of that equation. I've tried to word this so as not to give away the ending.

      Ya know there is definitely some truth to that. I do like both of these guitars alot, but the one you're referring to, I feel more comfortable with both in its tone and playability. I think playing something that you like better leads to more spirited performances (hence the importance of getting a guitar that inspires you). That being said, objectively, these two guitars are extremely close in quality and sound.

    I'm starting to think that the choice of ES series is not just sound but how it feels when you hold it. Some are bigger than others and when it's a little too big where it's jabbing your ribs I think that would be uncomfortable for me to play. I guess eventually you have to buy them all ;-)

    Great comparison. I've already got the Sheraton ii pro. Not as much difference between the two as I had expected. I expect the coil split in the Sheraton probably equates more to a smooth p90 more than a fender single coil.

    Love your channel, i m a big semi hollow fan, i own a Sheraton 2 pro, a dot with p90s, a gretsch streamliner and a selfmade trini lopez , didnt pick up a fully hollow one yet, the sheraton is a killer (didnt use the coiltap once tho), but i kinda enjoy the dot with the p90s more atm, its weird it sound somehow "older".
    Best wishes from Austria keep rocking

    I am a left-handed player so the choice of guitars is not so extensive as those available for righties. However I have managed to get lefty Gibson ES-335, Gibson ES-330 (both Memphis 2018), Gibson ES-339, and I have just obtained a Chinese lefty Casino in Vintage Sunburst (as a back-up for the 330). Pleasantly surprised at the quality of the Chinese guitar. If it was my main guitar I would swap out the pickups and electronics but, that said, the stock ones are reasonable. Wish Gibson did a lefty ES-390.

    Would be hard to tell these two apart in a blind shootout. Casino sounds a little more dynamic and open, Sheraton a little thicker in the mids. Casino probably better for rhythm, Sheraton may have the edge doing leads. All in all pretty darn close though.

    I have the Casino Coupe. I agree that there aren't many (any?) options for a hollow P90 guitar, which makes the Casino stand out. There are more options for a semi-hollow HB guitar. Next on my list is an Epi ES-339. I wish I were taller so that I could comfortably play the full sized guitars while seated (and reach stuff on high shelves). Nice work, as usual, Jack.

    I have a 2001 Korean made Sheraton II Pro. I loved the guitar itself, the stock pick-ups not so much. Changed them to Seymour Duncan Jazz in the neck and JB for the bridge. So much nicer.
    I assume those are the stock pups in the video. I was surprised by how good yours sounded with a mild overdrive. I couldn't get anything close to that with my Fender Twin and any of my overdrive pedals.

      @@JackFossett that's ok man, it was time to try something new anyway. I'm really keen on an epi 339 or a casino. Casino sound so unique but we're a Bowie band and do a few gainy numbers like Ziggy Startdust. Hope you're enjoying more music time at home.

    I have a Sheraton II and I'm thinking about upgrading the pickups. The guitar plays great, really great, but I think it could have better clarity. After watching this video I think that I ought to try the Casino... the P90s & hollow body are likely more what I'm looking for. Also, the Sherry is HEAVY... yikes! I would not want to have that strapped on my back for a whole gig, that's just me. Thanks for the video.

    The Casio definitely had something extra to its tone, but P-90's on a hollow body vs humbuckers on a semi is going to be like that. Humbuckers are smoother, maybe better for Jazz, but Grant Green used an ES-330, so maybe not?

    Wow what an amazing channel! Thank you so much for putting the time together to do all this, it’s great 👍🏻 I own all three but own the Sheraton before the Grover heads and I love it! I love the Casino and the Riviera but as an owner of the Gibson 335 the Sheraton is the closest to a Gibson I think you can get so it’s the flip side of what you’re saying about the Casino being as close to the original Epiphone Casino (prior to Gibson buying them)

    If there is nothing to screw a stop bar into, the Casino being fully hollow, what are the tune-o-matic's posts screwed down into? So is there actually a block under the bridge? I don't understand why the Casino does not have a floating wooden bridge to site a tune-o-matic's metalware on top, as on earlier Starfires etc.

    Casino for sure. Wonder if some noise cancelling pickups and f hole covers would solve the feedback issue or kill the tone...? Soundhole covers seem to work for Tommy Emmanuel.

    • @JackFossett
      @JackFossett  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So noise cancelling pickups are a cool option, the trouble is that the only ones that fit the Casino are particularly expensive (Lindy Fralin comes to mind - MojoTone also but the neck pickup would have to be modified to fit) and difficult to install. I've never experimented with soundhole covers, I basically just save the Casinos for either studio or the gigs like I mention in the video.
