1 more tip. When partially centered and you want to stop for minute, ease your hands off slowly and gently. Releasing too quickly can allow the clay to "spring" back and go a bit off center from where it was.

That's wonderful.😍 Centering is one of the hardest things to master in wheel throwing and yelling does not help (at least for you and I it doesn't) a little help and understanding goes a long way. My high school teacher was not very hands on either, but he was a calm hippy type. I think I learned some wrong techniques, but was able to make some good things. I am now after 48 years taking classes again. Look at Florin Gadsby videos also. You may have faster results if you actually push in and forward with that left hand as you are centering.
Thank you, Tricia. 😊 Yes Florin Gadsby is great! I'm teaching from a beginner's perspective. Showing what worked for me when I was learning. It would take me longer to center than it did to make the piece. Now I can center in less than a minute. As we grow we all throw in a way that works best for us. There are so many great ways to create with clay. 😊

I’m curious if you’re right or left-handed because my left hand is not as strong as my right, so to use it as the anchor hand doesn’t work so well for me. Love your wheel and glaze videos!
Thank you so much. Yes, you are right, there is a difference. It may be better for you to use your left hand as an anchor hand. You can even try reversing the direction of your wheel. 😊

I was struggling for the longest time until one of my teachers showed me this way of centering. I thought it might help others also. The good news is there are other ways to center; hopefully, one will work best for you. 😊 Keep practicing 👍

Centering is a pain.
That was my biggest obstacle. This is the way I finally got it. 😊👍
It's always amazed me how I have absolutely no problem getting good results on a wood lathe or a spinning wheel but have so much problem with a pottery wheel. I will be trying these hints and hopefully will make a breakthrough.

How does the clay feel When its to wet? Soft is Nice for wedging, but is it Okay for throwing?
There is a sweet spot where it feels soft enough to throw but not too soft because you will be introducing more water then a pro would. That's why I like Amaco clays. The clay I use is in the (show more) notes for you. 😊If you push in and your finger goes into the clay without a lot of effort, it's good to throw with. You will definitely get the feel for it the more you throw. 👍😍

I had a question about making a lid for my pot and was wondering that while I make my lid should my pot still be wet or is it ok to finish the lid if the pot is bone dry?
Thank you, Angie. very good question. yes, you should make both at the same time. I have several videos on making a lid. A sugar jar, garlic holder, and cassarol dish that may help th-cam.com/video/skGYaj5x8F8/w-d-xo.html It's best to measure the gallery right away so the lid will fit. Because the gallery will start to dry and shrink. 😊

Hello Marie, how long did you take to master centering when you started.
😂 I have to laugh every time I think of how long it took me to center clay when I started throwing. I wanted to throw on the wheel so bad that I just kept trying. I think it was around 6 months. Shortly after my teacher taught me this way to center on the video. Everyone is different and it does depend on how often throw. 👍😊
