This man opened doors for black performers! He sang, danced and had an amazing voice. He did all of it with one eye! He lost it in an accident I believe. Song is about a man struggling in the prejudice south who was so talented he became famous…

Learn the songs history. This song is not about Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Robinson never spent one second in any jail. This song is about a down and out white man. The song was written by a white man. During that time, white and Black men would not have shared a jail cell in New Orleans, it would have been against the law to put them in the same cell together. Bill "Bojangles" was a highly paid star of stage and film, he was never down and out, nor was he a drunk who would have been in a drunk tank in some local jail. He certainly didn't dance for drinks and tips.

Big big presence in the world of entertainment, and a massive talent from early childhood. Was part of the original Brat Pack with Frank Sinatra etc. The original Ocean's 11 and so so so much more. He could do everything comedy and drama, dance and song. He started on street corners tapdancing at like 6 years old and made it to the damn top with talent talent talent and hard work. Look him up.

The Rat Pack was actually formed by Humphrey Bogart in the late 40's and later on Frank Sinatra assumed the Chairman of the Board title. Frank certainly knew that Sammy was the greatest talent out there and it was a no brainer to bring him into it. He actually met Sammy before he was part of the pack.

Sammy Davis Jr was a great entertainer. He could sing, dance, act, play the drums. He was part of the famous Rat Pack back in the 1950's, 1960's and beyond. The Rat Pack was legendary and included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford. They ruled the Las Vegas strip for decades. They made the original movie "Oceans Eleven", which has been redone by other stars. There is a great version of this song by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in 1970 which was a top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is the story of an old man who danced in minstrel shows and had a tough life during the early part of the 20th century. Listen to the lyrics. They tell a story.

Those little "step moves" and the hat ...don't they kinda remind you of someone else? Do the initials MJ mean anything to you? Yes Michael...he also used some of the same moves in his performances as well as a hat. Just remember that the music back then was the forerunner for the music today and deserves it's due. The song Mr. Bojangles is a story and shouldn't be rushed. It is a famous song and has been sung by numerous artists through the year. Keep an open mind!

Sammy Davis Jr. was a legendary singer, dancer, musician, and actor. My recommendation to you brothers is to research artists you have never heard of before you react to them. I can tell you Michael Jackson credited Sammy as one of his influencers, and he didn't fall asleep watching him. He learned from him. True, Davis Jr. was from a different era, but he didn't have to cuss, have half naked women, or elaborate staging to entertain an audience.

You need to brush up on more Sammy when he was younger as he did it all and broke down a lot of barriers for black entertainers. Michael Jackson even wrote a song called Because of You that he sung at Sammy's 60th anniversary special. Gregory Hines had a little dance off with him in the same show and kissed Sammy's feet because of doors he opened for the future generations. Even up until his death he was a better singer than most out there today.

The song was orginally performed by the Nitty Gritty Earth Band. The reason why it means something to Sammy Davis Jr. is that he started performing in the "minstrel shows" as a child. Sammy Davis was a member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack and because of the two of them increased the rights of black people. Sammy Davis often performed with Frank Sinatra. The major hotels that booked him didn't want him entering through the front door. On more than one occasion Sinatra refused to perform unless Sammy Davis was treated with the proper respect. I was not fond of this presentation of the song which is great. For whistling listen to Mexican Whistler by Roger Whittaker

Song was written and recorded by Jerry Jeff Walker in 1968 then the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded it in 1970 and that is in my opinion the best version . Sammy recorded it in 1972 and it became a bit of a signature song for him.

This song and tells a story, if you're a poor reader and you reading comprehension is sub-par, you'll have difficulty understanding a song that tells a story. The fact that you know nothing about this man is a sad indictment on your parents who have failed to educate you about our history. Sammy was a star of the stage, film and recorded music. He was a philanthropist and active in the struggle for Civil Rights for Black Americans in this country. You should be ashamed for not knowing who this man was. I hope you'll read this and then do some research on and educate yourself the way Sammy did. Yes, the way Sammy did, he was self-educated having never attended any formal school, nor was he home-schooled. In fact, when he entered the U. S. Army, he was unable to read or write.
