That moment when you hear Danny DeVito's name. (C&C Tanya Voice) I'm there! Hasbro, really good at keeping a franchise alive... (Cough) Heroscape (cough)
Actually, MLP being rebooted isn't surprising. They've been rebooting the franchise since the beginning after all, since his has been going for years it's natural they'd want to pull the plug at some point.
@mandellorian Hasbro probably doesn't have much choice but downsize a bit due to... The Last Jedi (guess which company Disney has licensed to make the toys).

The reason mlp is so good when compared to other children’s cartoons is because there’s actually a lot of lore and character development, it is for kids but the story can easily appeal to anyone. The only childish aspect to the story is honestly just the friendship morals
“What’s with bronies making good music?” OH MY GOD! that’s too true. And the fact that a lot of them blew up even further than just brony music after a while just blows my mind. So many incredible artists and creators in that fandom.
I like all kinds of music but i'd say that around 1/4 of the music i listen to is either brony music or music produced by a brony musician/former brony musician.
have you even tried to get into a new fandom after MLP? I have not been an active brony for some time now but I could never find myself comfortably into another fandom since. Have you trired finding art, music or good fanfiction of other fandoms? I mean, there is the occasional thing or two, but I can't even list five fanfics outside the MLP fandom that I liked, while Fallout Equestria is still standing strong as my favourite book since I first read it and stories like Hard Reset are better than most published books I've read. This level of quality and quantity of fan work is unique to the Ponies and that's why I love this fandom as much as I do.
Two main reasons MLP: FiM became a hit outside the intended demographic. 1. And this is the most important part...it's a well-made show. The animation is good, The songwriting is very good. The dialogue is often very good. This was not just "mailing it in just to sell toys". 2. The show has a good message.
Lots of well made shows being sidelined or underestimated for being a “girl show” and other stupid crap so no, that’s not the reason. If you wanna know the actual reason it became popular among men, watch Jenny Nicholson’s video, it’s actually very interesting.
Anyone else remember Pound puppies Littlest pet shop Jem and the holograms Sabrina secrets of a teenage witch And Strawberry shortcake Those were the times
“I like Friendship is Magic, but I get bored when series go on and on and never stop. I'd like there to be an ending, and if Friendship is Magic decides to wrap up, I'd be okay with that.” Boy do I have good news for you.
alot of the hard core fans of the show either have series mental health issues, physical health issues, or have survived tramuatic events. I've met a few hard core fans with PTSD after serving in the military. This show is very cathartic and serves as a great escape.

@@SourRobo8364 I guess I'm just lucky that lately I've been watching ones that end nicely (or are otherwise continuous). But I will admit a lot of anime have a "read the manga" ending.
What's hilarious is that the original 80s show killed off 2 villains, first in the pilot and the second in another episode. 80s MLP had more guts to kill off villains than boys action shows like GI Joe and He-Man, just think about that.
Well, there's also the Rainbow Of Light, which it's not as powerful as the Magic Of Friendship. But if that Rainbow Of Light becomes a character in the next generation, I'm sure I will binge watching.
@@Elementa2006 I never grew up with G1 but I surely remember that there's three witches in the 1986 movie. I guess I must figured out how that Smooze really originated or something. To all you grown ass bronies out there, watch what you love!! MLP has helped me cope with my PTSD, and it’s no wonder why there are so many bronies from the military. Yeah. I loved to see her trying to be a princess and a kid and an alicorn all at the same time. Plus if she a late bloomer on the cutie mark that would hard.
When you know that now Twilight is immortal because she is an Alicorn and now she has to see her friends die, and everyone else in Equestria slowly pass away, being replaced by a totally different generations.....it hurts man
apparently the creators confirmed that twilight wont outlive her friends, meaning she either isn't supposed to live that long or something happened that also caused the stuff in mlp new generation

@@jmiller2728 It's because people loved the idea of Starlight as a villain, and they don't get how easy it would be for a pony gifted at mind control to quickly capture Twilight and Spike in a hypnosis spell that convinces them that she's super-awesome at magic, and totally would've won, but Twilight discovered her super secret backstory, and talked her into being a good guy now. Because they don't realize that, all they see is what Twilight was hypnotized into believing, namely that Starlight was only bad because a childhood friend left her once, which would seem a little contrived if it were true.
*Villains:* I am inevitable... *Magic Of Friendship:* _I'm about to end this man's whole career._ [snaps in Harmony] *Villains:* OH SUGAR HONEY ICED TEA!!!
It’s a show about basic decency, morals, and respect. If honesty, laughter, friendship, loyalty, kindness, and magic are “girly”, then maybe being “manly” is the problem, just a thought🤷♀️
Come now, what's wrong with men watching this? My brothers and I watched this, Barbie and Anime that was supposed to be 'girly'. lol. My favorite in MLP are Discord and Applejack. Though I kind of disagree with the School of friendship cause its kind of contradicted what Celestia said before.
I guess it can come off as "creepy" not because it's feminine and stuff but because it's for children and it has such a crazy fandom. It's like if many grown men were obsessed with popoyo to the point where they make fanart of him killing/making out with other characters when it is a show for little kids, it can be very strange. Especially men that want to come off as edgy so they make fanart of ponies dripped in blood, sometimes they can forget little girls will probably look up these things , like "My little pony fanart" and find this sort of things. Trust me, I was a very hardcore my little pony fan when I was a little girl and I stumbled into a music video where a pony gave birth to child and the dad killed it. I thought it'd be a fun music video. But I'm not saying you're this kind of person this is just the stigma people have around it, but if you like it by all means enjoy it. I don't think Barbie is considered that bad, to my knoledge its fanbase is more tame and anime.....anime is and always will be....anime so it's understandable why people wouldn't be too altered.
Currently, the second half of MLP: FiM's 9th and Final season is going right now, Saturday mornings for me. I think it's like 10 more episodes left. Just FYI to you all. ...And I _would_ probably rate and give my opinion on the story-telling/writing, but after watching other peoples' video essays on other stuff and being aware of the hype yet other shows get, even _years_ later, I don't know if I can trust my opinion anymore, so I won't try. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ So being as general and vague as possible ('cuz I'm dumb), I like the 2nd generation of "mane 6" in the form of the new students in Twilight's new friendship school. And each student being from most of the different species of characters we've met through the series. Why? I just do. (I hope that's ok.) ☺️😌
Supposedly the comic series is going to be the 10th season. It will continue the story picking up right after the events of season 9. Plus there's that one special that was set after the events of season 9 so I guess we can throw that in too? Sadly the comic series won't start coming out until April. I guess we can hope the comic version of season 10 gets fan animations?
Nutellia Brot: gen 5 stands for Generation 5. Each of the generations represent a different style of the toys. Gen 1 was the first movie depicted in this video and it was made to sell the gen 1 toys. Then Hasbro changed the designed and came out with the gen 2 toys without making a series until gen 3 came out, changing up the designs once more and adding the series to accompany it. The series design of the ponies changed at gen 3.5 but since it was still the same series, it was the same generation of ponies as well. Then Lauren Faust came around and developed gen 4, creating the new toys. Now since there will be a new show with a new design, that means this will be another generation: gen 5.
As someone who never got into the show, I've been blown away by its community. The amount of high quality music, parodies and even animations is incredible.
As someone who's not in the fandom, but watched a handful of episodes, I have to say this was really fun and interesting to watch, even though you didn't go into the story/lore like...at all. It's hard to describe, but I really appreciate these marketing/history focused videos, that are nearly detached from the actual content of the series. Keep them coming!
There are other channels that focus on that sort of thing. Dr. Wolf comes to mind, but his lore videos are mostly insight and theorising. Honestly can't think of anyone else of the top of my head...
As for the original My Little Pony... you maybe had to be 8 yrs old to fall in love with it. I did. I was excited every day when it came on. It was MY show. Going to to the toy store with my sister to select and buy my very own My Little Pony was a huge fun event. It was the very first time I ever "collected" anything. I don't know, but it was a big deal, quality of the show aside. I loved the creative color combination and different symbols on the pony itself, loved the smell of a fresh pony right out of the plastic. Each pony had its own personality in my collection. I played with them. I bathed with them. They were marked on, they were loved to death. Again, I think you had to be 8. But I grew up, and hey, I still love those dang ponies! Seeing them fills me with heart rending nostalgia and memories of times with my big sister. Hope this helps explain it. ~ An 80's girl/old lady now
As a 19 year old girl I use to love watching this show when I was younger but stopped when I entered my last year of middle school because I was embarrassed. I ended up moving on to other shows appropriate for my age but I alway find myself going back to the show because I loved it so much. Now because of COVID and running out of shows to watch I went back to watching the ones I used to watch in my childhood.
Funny, I was borderline outcasted from my usual group of friends in senior year of high school for not watching MLP. It wasn't even for the "it's a show for little girls" reasoning, but more so because... it just wasn't my cup of tea. The four or so episodes I had watched were indeed enjoyable, just not something I'd go out of my way to watch more of. Bronies at the end of the day: are still people. And anyone who has read anything can tell you people are the source of their own problems. Great video, 11-out-of-12 Stay Woke.

"My Little Pony: The Movie" was actually the third movie. The first movie and pilot for the whole franchise was Rescue From Midnight Castle and was actually pretty good, and the G1 series it led into was also surprisingly watchable. MLP became the train wreck it was infamous for being when the G3 series started (especially G3.5.) The CCG is actually still going, and they are still releasing new sets for it.
This is quite true. Rescue From Midnight Castle was one of those 80s cartoons that wasn't afraid to be kinda dark, and I remember three-year-old me being scared half to death by the villain and the kinda demonic-looking dragon-things. It's definitely way more worth it to watch than the MLP theatrical release film. Heck, Escape From Catrina was a better "movie" (or, y'know, multi-part collection of episodes) than the theatrical release.
Do people forget it for little kids and not them like dang lol of course it not good I grew up with Dora and at one point hated it but not anymore.maybe it's nostalgia or I realized of course I'm not gonna like it because it's not meant for my age range lol
I think the end of any series sparks more merch sales as it's usually the end of good merch and after the end the merch they produce is either cheaper reproductions of older stuff or its lower quality crap they churn out to keep the money stream up. The best stuff is usually made in the middle or towards the end of a series. Not jsut that but the end of a series grabs peoples attention. I doubt it had anything to do with "defiance" too
Dunno about elsewhere, but here in the UK, 'guys things' and 'girls things' are still very much a thing. It's not just kids bullying fans of stuff of the 'opposite gender', but parents do it to their kids too. It's quite horrible when you think of it. I remember when My Little Pony first came out, I was one of many that was dumbfounded by its popularity, and like so many others I was quick to scoff at both the show and its fans. It wasn’t until a few months ago of that I actually saw some footage of the show and was surprised by how good the animation and voice acting was. I watched some episodes out of curiosity, and well, the rest is history. I have loved this show and every moment of it. It’s funny, imaginative, full of adventure, and it does a fantastic job with character development and exploring the complexities of interpersonal relationships. There were so many episodes that hit close to home, and I applaud the writers for coming up with realistic scenarios that we all have at one point been through. It’s a shame the show is coming to an end, but I’m glad I was able still get into it even if it’s not as popular as it was a few years ago. As for why it became popular, I’m not discounting your theory, I just think there’s more to it. This show came out in the wake of cynical times (both economic and political), and at the end of the day I think people wanted to watch something optimistic and uplifting to take their mind off of things. Plus, if you create something that ends up transcending your target demographic, then you’ve created something special, and it should be celebrated, not mocked. Sorry for the long rant, it’s just that this was the last show I expected to have such long and lasting impression on me.
What was the footage that got you into it? I started watching when Season 1 was in full swing/ended back sometime in 2012, and I went into it, even as a gay, musical-loving nerd, expecting childish rubbish, and I even made jokes during the "storybook" segment because of how low my expectations were for MLP, but as the episode went on I realised that it was actually a pretty charming show full of potential, and it really felt like someone looked at the more childish nature of the show up to that point and went "hey, let's not try that. how about we actually make the characters and plots a little more adult friendly and relevant to modern audiences".

2:53 "It also appealed to adult MEN" * like it was supposed to. Target audience was for children AND THEIR PARENTS. Yeah, believe it or not, a show with plenty of appeal to people ranging in ages 7-23 were liked by people... in ranges 7-23.
But 13-23 are not kids and not usually parents (and if they are the kids are likely too young to understand). So that age group, which ended up being the primary audience, was not the intended audience.
@@mnpinky8669 They still fall within the same age range, and what appeals to someone in their early 20s is going to overlap with those in their teens. There isn't just one year where you "suddenly" don't care about cartoons or comic books, ask all the millions of fans of anime in their 30s, or comic enthusiasts, or yourself when you watch Steven Universe/Star Vs The Forces of Evil/Young Justice/or any of the other dozens of cartoon properties people _still_ _like_ even though they're bordering on adults.
The thing is, the show was meant to be _tolerable_ for parents watching the show with their children, but it wasn't supposed to make them _fans_ of the show like it ended up doing. It also wasn't targeted towards them exactly either, nor was it targeted towards males between 13 and 25, which is why it was so unexpected.
They reboot the show every decade or so. It's tradition. This was G4, next is G5. Perhaps the most ironic aspect of brony culture is that it was always just one small part of a moving cog.
I feel so lucky I lived my teenage and early adult years in this decade... My Little Pony, Game of Thrones, Adventure Time, Savant and dubstep in general (+inspiring me to produce music of my own), whole decade building up to the Infinity War, even dumb League of Legends I no longer play, but played an integral part of making bonds with new friends... What a decade full of great things...
I was following mlp: fim as an animator while the show was still in development. The real beginning of public interest in the show was back in 2009 with an article in the popular animation industry -focused website Cartoon Brew lamenting the “end of creator-driven cartoons.” Remember this was still the early aughts animation slump *before* Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Bojack Horseman, Rick and Morty, Steven Universe, etc. I was a fan of Lauren Faust, and also a fan of girly stuff, and so was exited to see her new show. After Faust left the show, and after any of the episodes were under her direct supervision, I lost interest in mlp. The canon was increasingly retconned, the established characters Flanderized, so most of the post-season 4 episodes don’t have that “magic” of the earlier ones. Which is a shame, because mlp used to be so fun and exiting, and being part of the fandom at that time was such a blast! I think one reason for the runaway popularity of the show was how unapologetically feminine it was. I think femininity in North American media is so rare, that it’s novel to see and makes a show stand out.
Some rumor say Generation 5 who star in 2 years is goin to be more mature and is goin to be of nordic mithology with Ydrasill The world tree who conect all nordic world, and every pony race is separate in diferent world but somthing goin to hapend that will unite the new mane 6. If is Nordic mithology is posible some villans goin to be dragons like the world snake,or the giant dragon who is eating the tree in mithology,or Fenril the wolf or the other 2 wolf who eat the sun and moon if they put that in G5 the 2 wolfs are potential villans 😮
I hope they do their research if that's the case and avoid cringey pronunciations common to English...like "muh djolner" when speaking about Thor's hammer.
This show has definitely changed my life. It helped me find the love of my life, helped my mental health and find my gender identity. And as much as I love this show, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the last 2 seasons. I would’ve been happy if it ended after the season 7 finale. But at the same time, we still had some pretty good episodes later on.
I'm part of the fandom so, admittedly biased, but I'd have loved a deeper dive into all things MLP. It would have been cool to look at some of the mini-series./ spin-offs in the comics. The tabletop rpg is pretty awesome, they recently released an rpg expansion that's mostly standees and other tabletop aides which you would have probably have had a blast opening. I love the video and I love that you did one, but 15 minutes feels so insubstantial especially given that so much was focused at the early parts of the fandom and not very much on the show itself. I had no idea about those anime figures, if they're not absurdly expensive I may have to flag them down.
Go back a little further to the very first episode/movie Rescue At Midnight Castle. Megan first appears with the first gen ponies that leads to the Gen 1 cartoon; a very dark show indeed. MLP The Movie literally ties in the the tv season it was released with as the Witches and the Smooze appear in a 10-part story in that series.
That was my first exposure to MLP so I avoided FIM until season 4 was airing- watched the third season finale on TH-cam on accident- and I fell in love. But back to the point, the OG show scarred me as a child, I remember this episode where the ponies were lured to this candy castle and the more they ate the more drained their souls and bodies became so the second half of the episode was the ponies who avoided the sweets to try to restore their shrivelled and wrinkled friends to their original plump state. The OG Movie is pretty bad. I do love the Princess Promenade film though, mostly to compare the voices to their G4 characters.
@@lollypiness3359 jeez. I’ve honestly never sat down and watched the older generations mainly due to the shows nature. Funny thing, I was actually ANNOYED into watching the show. I was trying to do homework and my older brother wouldn't leave me alone, so I caved and watched 4 episodes, and I've been hooked on this strange show for years.
Oh boi... I remember watching this and Transformers Prime with my sister, eventually we both stopped and now we both like Bakugan and Beyblade/Marvel & DC
Ah, I remember being in elementary school when this show first aired. I grew up with the older generation of My Little Pony and I decided to watch this one because of what it was. I really liked this show as a kid and I appreciate it more as a teen. My only complaint is that the fandom either sexualized some of the ponys or made creepypastas. Those people are the reason we can't have nice things. (Some of the Creepypastas are good but I don't think that children should have to be very cautious when looking up MLP stuff)
"Gender fluidity explains it all!" Aaaaaactually that's about as rare in the fandom as outside it. The harsh reality is that 4chan's cartoon-fan board got very interested in the show AFTER a feminist reviewer bashed it - before it ever came out - over Rainbow Dash being a "tomboy" (and therefore, allegedly, a "lesbian stereotype"). Most of the early "brony" fandom WAS from 4chan, and they made the memes and video mashups which got tons of other people watching the show. It snowballed from there.
It is ironic that the fandom of tolerance and acceptance came from 4chan tho. The cradle of the modern internet and one of the most hostile websites ever is a very awesome place to be! The history books should never forget 4chan.
Has nothing to do with gender. For me, I was always a fan of musical theater, and their music guy, Daniel Ingram, is fantastic, and ALSO a fan of musical theater (you can tell from the songs.) Their inclusion of John DeLancie reprising his role as Q (let's be honest here, that's what Discord is) sealed the deal for me.
@@silverscreen842 To call the post season one music "catchy" doesn't really do it justice. The music is well-written, and so is the show. It usually follows a slice of life format, with its positive and humanistic themes being once again reminiscent of Star Trek: Next Gen, but when they write adventure, things can get pretty epic, from the shapeshifting succubus that stages a shakespearean coup on Canterlot, to feed its population to her brood, to the psychopathic cult leader who enacts a revenge scheme to "it's a wonderful life" the main characters to death, to the fight paying homage to DBZ with a soul sucking centaur powered by every horse on the damn planet.
Thing is guys were looking into magical girl anime around that time too. While he definitely used the wrong terminology, he isn't wrong in that men starting to not give a shit about what's considered masculine or not really helped push this thing.

OH MY GOD! that’s too true. And the fact that a lot of them blew up even further than just brony music after a while just blows my mind. So many incredible artists and creators in that fandom.

Two main reasons MLP: FiM became a hit outside the intended demographic.
1. And this is the most important part...it's a well-made show. The animation is good, The songwriting is very good. The dialogue is often very good. This was not just "mailing it in just to sell toys".
2. The show has a good message.
5. THE ponies and other Pony like creatures are good looking like they have Nice Designs and *Their Long flowing hair*
Lots of well made shows being sidelined or underestimated for being a “girl show” and other stupid crap so no, that’s not the reason. If you wanna know the actual reason it became popular among men, watch Jenny Nicholson’s video, it’s actually very interesting.
Ŷęp!
7. They go on interesting and creative adventures and the stories are unique.
I legit dont care all that much about the message and could probably do without all of those songs and friendship stuff.

It wasn't even for the "it's a show for little girls" reasoning, but more so because... it just wasn't my cup of tea. The four or so episodes I had watched were indeed enjoyable, just not something I'd go out of my way to watch more of.

@CatandBonez True, but those also ended up being the people that left during the later years, allowing a more consistently nice fanbase to develop. "My Little Pony: The Movie" was actually the third movie. The first movie and pilot for the whole franchise was Rescue From Midnight Castle and was actually pretty good, and the G1 series it led into was also surprisingly watchable. MLP became the train wreck it was infamous for being when the G3 series started (especially G3.5.)
The CCG is actually still going, and they are still releasing new sets for it.

I never thought it was an act of defiance to watch/buy MLP merchandise, I just liked the show and characters. I support things I like with money.

* like it was supposed to.
Theres nothing wrong with it
It's a show like SpongeBob, it can appeal to anyone.

*Mane 6:* [mental breakdown intensifies]
*Magic Of Friendship:* _I fear no man, but that thing... it scares me._

The "Aaaaaactually" makes me think you're Adam Conover-

Has nothing to do with gender. For me, I was always a fan of musical theater, and their music guy, Daniel Ingram, is fantastic, and ALSO a fan of musical theater (you can tell from the songs.)
Their inclusion of John DeLancie reprising his role as Q (let's be honest here, that's what Discord is) sealed the deal for me.
It has good characters and catchy music. That's it.
Season 9 is officially out, it has been for a while I suggest if you feel like it that you should watch it.
I don't think it's "gender fluidity" so much as the simple fact that "it's actually pretty good".
