Good job Angler! Three fish including a nice sand bass. A few fish to the net does a lot for your confidence and that’s the most important piece of equipment you can have. Keep up the good work and the fun videos. And thanks for the best good-guy deal with Risen.
Thanks for the video! The sand bass are actually Spotted Bay Bass and the second one was a very respectable size...they don’t get as big as the calicos or barred sand bass. On the beach keep in mind that the structure is always moving, most caused by wave and outgoing tide action. Most will be “erased” by the outgoing tide during low tide. Good luck!
Glue some plastic Easter eggs in stripping basket or some small toy cones... Makes a big difference to help your line come back out of the basket.. I learned this making my own baskets.. Cool video.
Nice job on the calico and spottie! I just commented on your last video and didn't realize you posted this one up recently. I was up there last week to get a couple baitcasters but didn't have a chance to fish, else I would have.
@@McFlyAngler yea fly fishing around those rocks where there are mussels, barnacles, etc is always a sketchy proposition. Even if you have a stripping basket if your line gets down in the rocks that's never a good thing. Only time I fly fish the salt is if I'm clear of obstructions if I can help it so the surf or in a float tube in the harbor is another great way.
Congratulations on your catch. Those spotted Sand Bass you caught we refer to them as spotted bay bass or just plain ol spotties. Looks like you're enjoying quite a steep learning curve. Generally I just avoid the top and the bottom of the tides and usually do better on a rising tide. Love the videos by the way.
@@McFlyAngler oops pardon me. I guess I should read the descriptions LOL. If you ever find yourself up in the Long Beach area would be glad to show you around.
Any chance there is a way for me to still get one of the fishing shirts you have on? I have one and love it. I’d like a few more. If not any idea on something similar that isn’t $80?
No the company isn’t selling them anymore for me. Sorry! And for something similar, I haven’t found anything I like personally that is as good for anywhere near the same money
Dang. I remember you saying they where going away I was just hoping. It’s too bad they don’t sell blank ones or ones with their logo on it or something.
They do on amazon. I just don’t get any money for them. And they have nothing on them. No logo whatsoever I think. Vapor apparel. I made $5/shirt before. But they also charged me a huge fee for printing them as well. So they are pretty cheap without my logo.
Here is a link to their shirts... amzn.to/2XDpQQU. If you use that link amazon will give me some money for affiliate type thing. Every little bit helps.
It's to keep it from wrapping around your legs in the surging surf or in general just to keep the line in control. Also keeps the line off of the ground and Barnacle covered rocks that can ruin the line.
Watch it on stepping of stuff, I live on the East Coast and for years I used surplus Vietnam Jungle boots with the steel soles ! Keep your rods and reels clean after the salt use. I wash them off and dry before I do anything else. Also if you are really going to be doing a lot of inshore saltwater fly fishing you really need to go to either an 8 or a 9 wt, I fish 9 wts myself after years with an 8, along with a 10 wt. The wind is the thing. Look for the baitfish, if you find the baitfish you will find the fish- At least that is the ticket for Strippers and Blue fish. I love catching bluefish on a fly rod- I keep my smoker going all summer long.
Oh yeah, unfortunately it’s not really the type of fishing that’s going to catch anything really big. Oceanside harbor is limited to rather smaller fish. I’ve never had trouble with this rod and casting even larger flies though. If I go out on a boat I will bring an 8-10wt for sure though! :). What’s funny is I can cast this 6wt further than my 8wt, even with larger flies. And in the wind. Granted my 8wt rod is ok quality, but the 6wt is a super high end rod that just does everything effortlessly. As for watching where I step, I’m not really too worried where I’m fishing. We don’t have anything to worry about with stepping on. Occasionally stubbing the toe on a rock or something, but nothing too bad.
Nothing like paying your dues when starting the salt. The learning curve can be a bit disheartening when starting. Fishing with the right fly fishers will help big time. Those Spotties hit and fight hard which make them a great sport fish to target. Waves and I do not get along so I fish the softer side of the salt. Back bays and bays where the wave are minimal. th-cam.com/video/1AaMca4Fdyw/w-d-xo.html Mission bay is just south (1/2 hr.) of Oceanside.
Oh man, yeah I am not as overdone by that. It’s pretty relaxed and easy going on this channel my friend. I think that’s what draws my subs in. They like that it’s relaxed and not always in their face trying to sell them something...
Mission bay is where you should have started, fiesta island has plenty of shore spots. Also for beach fishing use orange bonefish patterns.
Thanks for the tips!

Yeah man, fun for sure! So unfortunately I miss-identified them and they were actually spotted bay bass. Ooops! Haha

Yeah, thanks for letting me know, check out the description section, I already had corrected my mistake.

Thanks, ok I’ll look for cones..
Let me know how you make out with them.. Good luck..
Any idea where to get some? As for the plastic Easter eggs, aren’t those too shallow? You need something longer and thinner no?
No the larger Eggs will work.. Taller is better.. I would look in the kids car and truck section at Walmart or a place like that for the cones...

Yeah thanks. It’s ok fishing here, just not as productive on a fly rod. Kinda tough in this way.

Unprofessional is OK, we're all friends here. Glad Bob's fly worked for you. Keep up the good work and maybe you'll have better luck next time.
Thanks man
i went to high school in oceanside. i live in sacramento now, but i still miss home
It’s a nice area man
I would recommend going with a full sink extra fast line
Tough with those rocks there... thanks for the recommendation
You seem to be spending a lot of time in the San Diego county. I got a few spots that I could show you especially if you have a float tube.
Oh I’m not there anymore... now I’m in northern CA
Love what u do thnx for the awesome vids
Hey thanks for watching! :)

Yeah no worries man, yeah I really thought it was a sand bass until I looked closer and saw the spots. Haha!

Great video but I was wondering what the striping basked that you put the fly line in was for.

yes "bait" is correct
You should fish silver strand in Coronado . I do pretty well there watch the tides
Ok cool! Thanks!
Second fish was a spotted bay bass.
Cool, thanks for telling me

This is true. Same with anything new really.
Put your sponsor name on the screen when you are talking about them. Also mention their name more often, instead of them or good guys
