Great reaction. I love this film. But unlike many other films, in my opinion, the shorter theatrical cut is actually much better than this longer director’s cut. This one makes it just a little too long without adding much to the story. So many Russell Crowe movies back then were absolutely amazing. Others worth watching are “Master and Commander: Far Side of the World”, “L.A. Confidential”, “A Beautiful Mind”, and “Cinderella Man”. All brilliant films. At the beginning, when you see Commodus “fight”, if you look closely, they actually practice the moves first, almost like a choreographed dance. So he never really fights anyone. It’s all for show.
The actor who played Marcus Aurelius is Richard Harris, a legendary british actor, In their last roles was this film and also the first Harry Potter movie as Dumbledore. He died and he never could still doing the the role of Albus in HP, being substituted by Michael Gambon. As well, Proximus in this movie it´s roled by Oliver Reed, another british legend. With a veeery interesting life haha. Himself and Harris were friends of "good life" includin¡g another legend Peter O´toole!!! Three legends!
Back in the 90s and 2000s, they made movies with real people and not CGI. From Braveheart to Saving Private Ryan to The Last Samurai to Gladiator, you can see all the choreography and general madness going on all over the place in the films cus they were real people. If CGI was used, it was only to fill in the bigger picture on battles on those large panned shots. Marvel movies, amongst many others, have stripped that away and made movies feel much more polished and clean looking. But often times it's films of this era (1990-2010) that have that realness quality to them. They used real explosions and extras, and were actually on location not just standing in front of a green screen.
Joaquin Phoenix gives one of my favorite performances of all time. Commodus is so pathetic and yet creepy, like you said a unique portrayal of a main villain. The "busy little bee" scene sends shivers down my spine.
Joaquin is always great! And that scene was probably one of my favorites in the film. So well written and just a great way to show how unhinged he was becoming! Very interesting villain for sure!
When I saw this movie in 2000 in theaters (I was 12 at the time and snuck in with my friends on a Saturday afternoon), I left the theater actually hating Joaquin Phoenix. For years after, anytime I saw him in a movie I didn't like him lol. It speaks to how amazing he is in this movie.
historic notes Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 26 April 121 - 17 March 180 was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 AD and a Stoic philosopher. He was a member of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty, the last of the rulers known, but later, as the Five Good Emperors and the last emperor of the Pax Romana, an age of relative peace, calm, and stability for the Roman Empire lasting from 27 BC to 180 AD. He served as Roman consul in 140, 145, and 161. Marcus Aurelius was born during the reign of Hadrian to the emperor's nephew, the praetor Marcus Annius Verus, and the heiress Domitia Calvilla. His father died when he was three, and he was raised by his mother and his paternal grandfather. After Hadrian's adoptive son, Aelius Caesar, died in 138, the emperor adopted Marcus's uncle Antoninus Pius as his new heir. In turn, Antoninus adopted Marcus and Lucius, the son of Aelius. Hadrian died that year, and Antoninus became emperor. Now heir to the throne, Marcus studied Greek and Latin under tutors such as Herodes Atticus and Marcus Cornelius Fronto. He married Antoninus' daughter Faustina in 145. After Antoninus died in 161, Marcus Aurelius acceded to the throne alongside his adoptive brother, who reigned under the name Lucius Verus. Under his rule the Roman Empire witnessed heavy military conflict. In the East, the Romans fought successfully with a revitalized Parthian Empire and the rebel Kingdom of Armenia. Marcus defeated the Marcomanni, Quadi, and Sarmatian Iazyges in the Marcomannic Wars; however, these and other Germanic peoples began to represent a troubling reality for the Empire. He modified the silver purity of the Roman currency, the denarius. The persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire appears to have increased during his reign, but his involvement in this is unlikely since there is no record of early Christians in the 2nd century calling him a persecutor, and Tertullian even called Marcus a "protector of Christians".The Antonine Plague broke out in 165 or 166 and devastated the population of the Roman Empire, causing the deaths of five to ten million people. Lucius Verus may have died from the plague in 169.Unlike some of his predecessors, Marcus chose not to adopt an heir. His children included Lucilla, who married Lucius, and Commodus, whose succession after Marcus has been a subject of debate among both contemporary and modern historians. The Column and Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius still stand in Rome, where they were erected in celebration of his military victories. Meditations, the writings of "the philosopher" - as contemporary biographers called Marcus - are a significant source of the modern understanding of ancient Stoic philosophy. These writings have been praised by fellow writers, philosophers, monarchs, and politicians centuries after his death. Commodus 31 August 161 - 31 December 192 was a Roman emperor who ruled from 177 to 192. He served jointly with his father Marcus Aurelius from 177 until the latter's death in 180, and thereafter he reigned alone until his assassination. His reign is commonly thought as marking the end of a golden age of peace and prosperity in the history of the Roman Empire the Pax Romana. Commodus accompanied his father during the Marcomannic Wars in 172 and on a tour of the Eastern provinces in 176. The following year he became the youngest emperor and consul up to that point, at the age of 16. During his solo reign, the Roman Empire enjoyed reduced military conflict compared with the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Intrigues and conspiracies abounded, leading Commodus to revert to an increasingly dictatorial style of leadership, culminating in his creating a deific personality cult, including his performing as a gladiator in the Colosseum. Throughout his reign, Commodus entrusted the management of affairs to his palace chamberlain and praetorian prefects, namely Saoterus, Perennis and Cleander. Commodus' assassination in 192, by a wrestler in the bath who held him underwater, marked the end of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty. He was succeeded by Pertinax, the first emperor in the tumultuous Year of the Five Emperors.
You watch it made me want to rewatch it again, gladiator is only one movie I rewatch so much that I forgot to count how many time I rewatch this awesome movie
It’s one of those movies where the historical inaccuracies just breeze past me because I love the movie so much. It’s usually so hard for me to ignore stuff like that but with this movie it’s effortless because of how quality it is just as a movie.
Hey guys! Yeah, this is def a long one but I'm so glad they left everything in. In the beginning battle, Allen saying "are they gonna kill off the dog"......i was afraid that would happen so glad it did not. Cool that you recognized Dumbledore! Who was that wizard guy in The Hobbit? I thought he was a Dumbledore also but I was told no. There were 2 Dumbledores in potter movies. Anyway, I have to mention some funny quotes yall said: when the emperor told max that "commodus will accept my decision" and Allen says "I dont think he will". Alex saying "maximus is a bad ass". Allen saying "you better relax cause I feel like maximus is coming for that ass"--lol and Allen saying when commodus coming onto sister "a little too much dude. Your being fucking weird" lol, yeah I hated those scenes. Just gross. And then Alex giving big ups to my all time favorite movie quote--"i am maximus meridius......husband to a murdered wife, father to a murdered son and I will have my vengeance in this life or the next". Definitely fire, alex!!! Man such a well written line. Yeah, the score was unbelievable--i even have the soundtrack. And the ending was just great with his buddy burying the figurines and saying that "not yet," line. Thanks for watching my pick! Glad you liked it and werent bored--i know it can be slow moving at times, especially for you young uns. :) Having the best reactors react to one of my fav movies of all time AND my fav tv series of all time (BB)? PRICELESS! thanks yall!
Hey Suzanne! Glad you enjoyed the reaction! Alex loved rewatching it and I loved watching it for the first time! Also the wizard in Lord of the rings/Hobbit is Ian Mckellen! He’s popular for a handful of things but he was magneto in the X-men movies! Great actor! But we had a great time watching this one thanks for the awesome pick and also for your continued support we love hearing from you! 🤟
“Polished” wdym by that? This was one of the best films of all time and people to this day beg for for movies like this..there is no creativity like this anymore.
It wasn’t a knock to the film lol. I just meant it’s got a sort of dark and gritty feel to it that movies had back in that era of movies rather then the bright polish feel that movies more so have in todays big blockbuster movies. It was something I enjoyed about it
Thank you for the support! We have seen Troy! Both big fans! another popular fantasy movie that I haven’t seen that I think were going to end up doing is braveheart though!
Great reaction, but why are you referring to this movie as "fantasy"? It is historical drama, loosely based on historical figures. Fantasy would be something like Lord Of The Rings or Harry Potter.
