He's emphasising that these people are the most difficult to do it with... but think about it. The ones who were trying to trick him are the ones he gets to sit down each round :) another level of trickery, he's getting the most simple minded person up on stage to make it easier for himself! Nice one Derren
Did this with my family... It was easy the first couple times (and of course it´s easier with someone you know well), but after that it was pretty much like guessing. When a person gets used to doing this and starts to look for what I´m looking for it´s more difficult. To do it four times with the same woman is amazing!
You will put it in the hand that feels RIGHT and Leave the hand threre is LEFT empty.. absolutely brilliant, and jet its in the other hand... Brilliantly done:D
He doesn't need a stooge to make a person think, and feel, that he is slowing his heart beat. Simple things like squeezing a tennis ball under the armpit can make the pulse in your wrist slow, or maybe he can turn his wrist to stop her feeling it. Agree with you 100% on the fake glass though. You can't stop yourself bleeding.
Everything he does and says he does it for a reason. even if it don't seem like it, such as "touch my goatee" you think its a joke but he is just watching what hand she uses.
Has anyone noticed that nearly each time he moves her arms to see how willing she is to move. Maybe the coin arm is less willing to move than the empty arm?!?! Clever little devil that Derren! :-)
god. a super clever, super simple, incredibly entertaining performance. and then the host comes on and does just such a bad joke. makes derren look even better.
nlp is a huge field which came from studying 3of the world's best therapists to see what made them so successful (viginia satir, milton ericksson, and i forget who!). there is a huge amount to nlp. it includes (but is MUCH more than,) influencing skills, but really this is just one *application* of it (which sales people love). My training with ITS in London was entirely about being able to help people (and yourself) to change old patterns and be more resourceful in all situations. recommended.
Or much more simply than a magnetic coin and watch gag, by tugging her about by both wrists separately, he may feel a subtle resistance from her being disinclined to yield as readily with the hand that has the coin in, as she's working so hard to keep it secret.
When he moves her arms apart before each prediction he can feel (at the wrist) as she involuntarily clenches her fist for fear of dropping the coin. Probably. Muscle reading has featured throughout the history of magic and Derren Brown is a self-confessed exponent.
@SadegoGG Brilliant point MsMonkeyFart. Added to this, there may be considerable (subconscious) IdeoMotor movement of the hand in which the coin is held? This could be an ultra-quick, repetitive left/right lateral eye movement; tiny muscular (though considerable if you are looking for this) tremour/twich of the appropriate hand. We each, for sure, are 'leaking' ideas, impressions, thoughts, feelings and state of mind all the time. People watching (non-intrusive of course) is fascinating!
@WrittenEidolon Yeah, he's really funny. "Would you like to touch my goatee?" :P I also just saw his stage show Enigma. I think I spend one half of the show laughing and the other half looking amazed. He does know how to make people laugh :D
Agreed. He touches her arms before each guess. Sometimes as a correction: "Facing down, this side here." ... "Just towards the front like that."... "Ok, let's bring you over to this side so they can see you."
Everyone trying to guess HOW he does it, have you not tried listening to him? He explains how as he's going along... Its not a trick, it's body language and psychology...
He's an exellent showman and it's a great aspiration for any magician to have, watching this layered with the many levels of subtleties. He's taken such a simple trick and dressed it up with showmanship and it's spectacular!
I think the real genius of Derren Brown is how he takes a trick like this that anyone can do, which is simply this: The person always turns their nose slightly towards the hand with the coin. And deliver it in such a way that he gets people so desperate to believe in NLP and all that subconcious nonsense that they will have long arguments about all sorts of complex possibilities that are simply BS. He tells an awesome story illustrating this in one of his books.
As far as the trick you're referring to is concerned, he does not have the ABILITY to consciously slow his heart rate, but he emulates the EFFECT, that is his trade. Just like this trick. The effect is that he uses psychological means to find the coin, whilst the mechanism is much more subtle. No need for stooges.
@Thatsthebadger1 it's because the hand you have the coin in, it's more tense than the other; Derren glances at it and can tell which one it's in. he just talks to make it seem like it's OMG. :L Derren Brown is awesomee, hopefully seeing him in May (:
After he says that she chooses her left hand. Also this is the only time she chooses this hand meaning she doesn't choose the same hand 4x in a row. Check it out at 6:10. =)
i am interested in magic, and have a few books. its all in the performace, and derren is worldclass in it. if you can sell the most easy and simplistic trick, you are a great magician. I love derren brown, esp. cuz he's fair over his acts. take this in consideration towards other "psychics & the likes"...
@SadegoGG Thanks for message SadegoGG. You are absolute correct...it is simply difficult to pin-down Derren's technique. But these movements to which I refer, are really tiny, and will only be noticed (through his trained eye) having asked the subject a number (or even in a specific manner) of times? Look at discussions on Ideo Motor movements in psychology/psychiatry applied books; even Derren, if I recall well, does discuss this in his Tricks Of The Mind. Best wishes. Ebs
The secret is in the fact that he can feel where she puts the coin when she moves her by her arms. People will tend to resist moving the hand containing the coin. This is where he gets to know where the coin is, everything else is just showmanship. Check it out, he uses the excuse of moving her around to feel if she resists the movement. The times are 3:384:315:54 and 6:36. If you watch it at those times exactly, it's pretty obvious. Enjoy :)
Actually u can tell what fist is tighter with touch but takes a lot of practice like most things in life to PERFECT. And what makes it DETECTABLE is that the Fist with the Coin is TIGHTER which makes the Whole Arm STIFFER n with Sleight movements n proper TRAINING u can FEEL A DIFFERENCE.
@Samgurney88 I'd like to know what you mean by a simple trick? I've seen a gadget on a magic site that gives you a vibration when your hand is in the vicinity of the coin. If you notice,he puts one of his hands over hers everytime (I think it's his left?) I've just stumbled on this clip again now knowing about this gizmo but as you say, his showmanship is excellent...I'd like to see him do it in a t-shirt,though...lol
@Thatsthebadger1 asking her to touch his goatee and getting compliance is to gain authority which subconciously lets the subject (in this case the woman) know Derren is in control. You'll see many Hypnotists and mentalists/magicians do this at the start.
I think he got her to stroke his goatee so he could see whether she was keeping her hand clenched as she did it. She stroked it with her right hand, it was clenched (to stop the coin falling out) and it was in her right hand! Also i wonder if anybody else noticed the subtle ways of saying things he used. Eg on the third time, before she made her decision he said something like "So you put it in the hand thats RIGHT, and leave the hand thats LEFT, EMPTY" (5:19) He is very clever :)
Yup. Plus, he's charming. And all the touches, eye contact, and body reading he does is seductive. Doesn't help I'm a sucker for mathematical men and illusionists though lol.
He knows which hand the coin is in every time with a secret gimmick. Then builds the story around it pretending how he worked it out. I know because I also own the gimmick and method to the same illusion and can perform the same trick.
@Blackpoolhoaxer he could also be reading her muscles, wich is an artform that was used by false mediums and several magicians learn it and use it today, and derren himself claims to have learned it in his books
@DickDivers This can be done in a T-shirt, no electronic or other device needed. It can be achieved by using a mix of psychological technique and a thing called Hellstronisn.
And if he was on David's team :L "Well by your eyes and facial expression I can tell that-" "OH SHUT UP AND JUST SAY IF YOU THINK IT'S A LIE OR NOT!!!" xDD
left this comment 2 years ago upon where everyone disagreed - almost convince me i was wrong - But as i first thought Derren is wrong is saying at 7:00 "same hand 4 times in a row" - she went right right left right - I thought me first impressions were right
Anyone notice the weird clenched fist he has on the lady's back as he takes her on stage, then with the same hand he puts somthing in or takes it out of his pocket before he starts talking to her.
I like how he takes the coin and keeps it at the end, saying "Thank you for donating to charity XD"
did he steal her pound?
He's got such a wicked smile... ;)
Aww look how nervous he was! The little head nods give it away but he did well hiding it really
Derren has a tick, that is not how this trick is done. Trust me, I know.
"Put it in the hand that feels right, and leave the one thats left empty" .... crafty derren and his way with words...
He's emphasising that these people are the most difficult to do it with... but think about it. The ones who were trying to trick him are the ones he gets to sit down each round :) another level of trickery, he's getting the most simple minded person up on stage to make it easier for himself! Nice one Derren
This man is completely perfect. He is brilliant! I'm so lucky to have actually seen his show and meet him. I love him.
Did this with my family... It was easy the first couple times (and of course it´s easier with someone you know well), but after that it was pretty much like guessing. When a person gets used to doing this and starts to look for what I´m looking for it´s more difficult. To do it four times with the same woman is amazing!
Haha Lilly at the end was classic. Loved how the woman had to ask for her pound back too.
You will put it in the hand that feels RIGHT and Leave the hand threre is LEFT empty.. absolutely brilliant, and jet its in the other hand... Brilliantly done:D
the greatest suggestion in Derren Brown's carrer: "touch my goatee" :P
"Put it in the hand that's right and leave the hand that's left empty..."
"50 of your earth pounds." subtle, but amazingly funny. love you derran.
I don't think she realised that it is an honour stroking Derren's goatee!
Oh, that was fun. How much I love seeing his sense of humor!! I've missed that. Thanks for the clip!
I am seeing him in March!! EXCITED MUCH!
She was like I want my pound back. And he legit said i don’t care it’s going towards charity please have a seat. Gotta love this man!!!
genius, i love him
Going to see Derren on my birthday :) second time, I can't wait :D
Derren is incredible. I would love to go see him live :D
Very very good Derren, going to see you to perfrom your show, Svengali soon.
He's a showman...he's very dishonest, but always honest about his dishonesty. It helps that he's beautiful, adorable and perfect in every way.
his skillz are the best

master of showman
His shows are based on human behaviour which is why i find him fascinating! Can't wait to see him live in April.
It's based on magnets. He has to touch their hands every time. Watch how he finds a subtle excuse to touch them
god. a super clever, super simple, incredibly entertaining performance. and then the host comes on and does just such a bad joke. makes derren look even better.

He is truly an amazing figure.
he is a good comedian as well as mentalist
@SadegoGG Brilliant point MsMonkeyFart. Added to this, there may be considerable (subconscious) IdeoMotor movement of the hand in which the coin is held? must meet this man!
he needed a pound for the car park.
thats why he did this set :P
You're right, it is obvious when you know it.
Of course, the first two public guesses were real ;-)
Everyone trying to guess HOW he does it, have you not tried listening to him? He explains how as he's going along... Its not a trick, it's body language and psychology...
He's an exellent showman and it's a great aspiration for any magician to have, watching this layered with the many levels of subtleties. He's taken such a simple trick and dressed it up with showmanship and it's spectacular!
Derren is a brilliant showman - he got a kiss, a pound, and got "felt up" on national tv...oh, and he did a good trick, too. Lee
"put it in the hand that feels RIGHT and the hand that is LEFT empty".....5:18
:P
I think the real genius of Derren Brown is how he takes a trick like this that anyone can do, which is simply this: The person always turns their nose slightly towards the hand with the coin. Put it in the hand that feels Right and the one thats Left empty.
I love how he yells 'I won a pound!' twice at the end
rofl u say this everytime.. u probabley right
:D Love Derren... fabulous with an audience, isn't he? :)
@LightTakayama i believe he tells him 2 'hold on' which is why derren later says 'when you catch up up there it'll be great' or somet like that
I followed along and he got it right with me all 4 times as well haha!!
Ahh, because she's like.. no and he pushes her into doing it.. and it's a bit wierd. but also funny.
hahah "touch it. ..touch it." OL
The last time:
"Are you happy to do THIS?" (He opens his left hand, and she nods. That means it's in the right)
Did he keep the woman's coin? That's how he makes his money!
Would be quite embarrassing if it failed the last time, the audience would have been ticked off! lol
@Thatsthebadger1 it's because the hand you have the coin in, it's more tense than the other; Derren glances at it and can tell which one it's in. he just talks to make it seem like it's OMG. :L
Derren Brown is awesomee, hopefully seeing him in May (:
@MrAlexMagic really, REALLY good show, svengali. :)
"i am gonna grab somebody from down here!!let me have a look..CHRIST NO!!!" XD
After he says that she chooses her left hand. Also this is the only time she chooses this hand meaning she doesn't choose the same hand 4x in a row. Check it out at 6:10. =)

LOL, he kept her coin
haha '50.. of your earth pounds..' hes an alien XD
How did he know that everyone wants to touch his goatee? Of course, he's Derren Brown!

It is not a tic, he is searching for rapport, and getting her to agree with him by nodding his head.
"would you like to touch my goatee?" ha this man is a genuis!

He does it the same way as the first three times. He tells some whoppers about how he's doing it.

I'd have put two coins in each of my hands and said "100 says you can't"
The woman is really funny too!
Yup i think the Goatee is involved !
The fact that we all noticed it is probable that she did too. But it was suddle enaugh so she didn´t think it too much.
@Thatsthebadger1 asking her to touch his goatee and getting compliance is to gain authority which subconciously lets the subject (in this case the woman) know Derren is in control. You'll see many Hypnotists and mentalists/magicians do this at the start.

when he touches her hands after she chooses which hand, she either will tighten her hand our not giving away the coin
Yup. Plus, he's charming. And all the touches, eye contact, and body reading he does is seductive. Doesn't help I'm a sucker for mathematical men and illusionists though lol.

hehe, touch it, touch it
What I meant was that many people know how he´s going to influence us, so if they catch him at it, they do the exact opposite.
yeah - that was his old guise, lily savage
He moves her hands every time, she puts extra resistance on the hand with the coin in.Simple as that, but quite genius.
Not so, the gimmick is for sale at magic stores.
@Blackpoolhoaxer he could also be reading her muscles, wich is an artform that was used by false mediums and several magicians learn it and use it today, and derren himself claims to have learned it in his books
He stole her coin at the end.
'50 of your earth pounds' Tehehehe..
@Ebsteins31653
I haven't read Derren's book in full in awhile. I guess i'll reread it sometime in the near future.
@DickDivers This can be done in a T-shirt, no electronic or other device needed. It can be achieved by using a mix of psychological technique and a thing called Hellstronisn.

yea, like that mattered at all. good for you.
Anyone notice the weird clenched fist he has on the lady's back as he takes her on stage, then with the same hand he puts somthing in or takes it out of his pocket before he starts talking to her.
@Phoebs2 What's really clever is how often we, the viewer, can see what he's doing, and how he's manipulating the subject - but they can't see it.
haha he wouldn't have got me i would have said left left left left
@owenydude But if he's using the Hellstronisn technicque....why doesn't he keep his distance?
"Would you like to touch my goatee?" LOL
