  • The 1980s saw the USSR’s influence and economy decline,The Soviet Afghan War, fought between 1979 and 1989, is one of the numerous reasons why the Soviet economy spent at least 27% of GDP on military expenditures rather than on civilian goods, which contributed to the USSR's failing economy in the 80s. Throughout the decade, the Soviet Union also saw four different leaders led the Nation: Leonid Brezhnev (1906-1982), Yuri Andropov (1914-1984), Konstantin Chernenko (1911-1985), and Mikhail Gorbachev (1931-2022), whose policies of Perestroika and Glasnost aimed to increase the efficiency of economic decision-making by decentralizing it.

    > The Soviet Afghan War, fought between 1979 and 1989
The battle in Brzezinski's Bear Trap and Takfiri incubator was actually over by 1988:
    > Pursuant to the Geneva Accords of 14 April 1988, the Soviet Union conducted a total military withdrawal from Afghanistan between 15 May 1988 and 15 February 1989
Possibly more important as an "exogenous shock" was the discredit that the management of the Chernobyl meltdown brought on the authorities.
Also recommending " Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More: The Last Soviet Generation" by Alexei Yurchak, who coined the term "hypernormalization" whereby you go about your daily life in the full knowledge that things can't go on the way they do.
