    Challenging yourself with different breeds is where I've learned the most.Anyone can teach basics to most herding breeds,helping the "neurotic" ones really brought clarity to some of the finer points of dog psychology. Your standards are you reputation,set them high. Great video&advice,enjoying your channel

    Loved this! I’m currently a dog trainer and in the process of building my own business right now. I agreed with everything you said. The “why” factor is so important! And I know many trainers that cap their knowledge at a certain point when they become a pro at something and they continue to do it and learn nothing more, it bothers me so much lol. I’m constantly learning new things. And I’ve trained many different breeds..and you’re damn right about that topic hahaha! I personally have 8 GSD’s and love the breed, but man when I get my hands on multiple other breeds, even small mixed breeds, boy does it get challenging! Love it though and I wouldn’t want any other passion in the world!!

    Haz, I got another GSD a little over a year ago, my first one was a female, from a good working line and damn she shows it. But I digress. The new one is a white GSD, not from a stellar line. But, I found your channel around the time we got him. He's a solid pet, that's all he will really ever be most likely, but a good boy, you helped a lot with that. He's eager to learn and has a awesome temperament and acceptable obedience. Always improving tho.
    I grew up working with big dogs (I say working as in trying to train my house dogs, mostly big, weimaraner, boxers, walkers, and various other hounds. We owned a lot of dogs that had jobs, they were meant to hunt, that's it.) And also horses. I broke horses and trained them to run barrels, poles, rope, etc. So naturally now I want to get out of a career that sucks ass, and build a business doing something I love and been doing a lot of my life and not really knowing it until now.
    I use to be the type of "trainer" (for all intensive purposes) that couldn't explain why I was doing something, I just knew it worked so I kept with it. Now over the past year and change, I've learned so many new techniques and the reasoning behind it, and I've made a for real and definite decision to go after this and make something. The market is wide open in my state (u.s. South Carolina) and I have a plan already in place to dip my toes in while I'm still wrapped up in this career, (to hopefully build in the next couple of years and make a transition later) offering free basic obedience classes in my neighborhood for dogs that don't have it (literally every one I see).
    I dont know if you will see a comment on a video this old, but if you do, I just wanted to let you know you inspired me, and I'm doing this for real. Hopefully one day I will be able to consider you a peer.
    Great job, I will continue looking to your company for information whenever you put it out and I'm glad there is someone like you putting real information out here for curious minds like my own!
    Thanks,
    Rob

    This is exactly what I wanted to know. Actually almost... been curious about your background and also how you got into protection training which is a goal of mine. I have a long way to go, but think I'll always feel that way. I've read countless books and am with over 20 dogs a day doing training. The experience is important and getting new information is only helpful if its applied and experienced or can help someone else. I agree with everything you've said and look forward to developing as a trainer to just become more effective. Sport training and protection are what I have my eyes set on. I want to be like you.

    This was really helpful, I take accountability in everything I do, & where i'm failing is getting my dogs aggression out when biting, or getting her to bite correctly. I'm like whoa, whoa, whoa lets not get carried away here! lol!
    BUT it is something that I've always been SUPER interested in!
    I DO LOVE TO TRAIN, but I haven't trained many.
    This was very interesting to hear your take on this!
    Right now I have a Malinois puppy, and she is completely different story (obviously)! lol!
    Oh, and I've also helped with training lots of breeds of hound breeds for various hunting.

    Michael Ellis is really good teacher, I really think it’s important to keep a humble mind when doing something. I have trained different dogs but my favorite are GSDs. Just makes me feel like I’m doing something right. I trained an Akita and the owners thought I was robbing them. I had a sharpei that OMG, I couldn’t have him to sit to save his life but at the end, learned a lot. Talking about trainers’ own dogs, I’m guilty lol. My GSD doesn’t like to train, has very low energy, has no food drive, has no bite drive. It’s like if she wasn’t a dog. She learns fast but very difficult to get 5 mins session.
    Good video. Spot on about what makes you a trainer....

    • @KK-dn8yj
      @KK-dn8yj 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The dogs you trained were easy, if you can’t get a small dog like that to sit then we need more learning...

    • @k-9enespanol259
      @k-9enespanol259 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KK-dn8yj you should know there are different types of trainers. I’m not a behavioral trainer. I’m a puppy trainer. I can do behavioral but I’m not good at it. I have also trained old dogs for leash walking, recall and basic stuff. Not all dogs are good for training. Some are smarter than other but it doesn’t mean they won’t learn. It just means it takes more time.

    I cannot talk about dog trainers, for i am not one. But i am a boxing coach and a strength trainer. I became a boxing coach not bcs i wanted to be that, but bcs i was a european class boxer that got injured. Same with the strength training. I was injured (again), and all that rehab shit didn't work, so i trained myself up to a deadlift of 600, and the other lifts accordingly. I see fitness trainers all the time that know it all, but are weak like chinese tea. In my opinion, you've got to be strong as fuck in one point of your life to coach how to get there.

      ok looked up the mini educator can we use this in the UK I want to use it on my dog,
      I had to use the slip chain at 6 months as she ruptured my shoulder pulling my arm left to right lunging at all sorts the birds bees leaves any moveing flying object on the street, it just got stupid as we had to cross a major road,
      she was getting more powerful,
      So at 6 months I was like right old school teaching for her,
      within half an hour she was tought to walk on the
      (aka choke chain slip chain)
      but I just can not deter her from lunging at rowdy dogs, up she goes on her back legs I prep the chain high but up she goes 😡
      Also her recall is terrible so defo want to try this if possible.
      Altough I think I'd get a lot of stigma about it,
      The looks I get with the chain but hay 🙈

    You are a master craftsman not an engineer. It's not a judgment: master craftsmen built cathedrals and caravels, engineers built that gizmo that I bought and threw in the trash the next day. The difference is that engineers learn their trade mostly from books (so it's very rule-based and the knowledge is transferrable) and master craftsmen learn by experience and direct knowledge transfer (what the heck does it mean "those vegetables are not done yet, boil them a bit more" and how exactly do you know a dog is fit for protection work other than "you just know")

    Here's the thing, the positive force free lobby is getting strong. Most shelters in my area have adopted this regime. I forsee that it won't be long before they become the governing body and set the standards for dog training. Then you and balanced trainers and e collars and pinch collars etc will be banned here too followed by bite sports and other dog sports. I hope there is an political organization that you support that will curb this eventuality?
