So sad to see a man who cares so much about birds and nature having to do this for us all. Why should the hunters be protected, the bird have just completed an amazing journey to be faced with this, good luck Chris, thank you for these films I didn't know this happened until now.
You and the Birdlife team are doing a great job of raising awareness. Having watched Marsh Harriers in Norfolk at the weekend it is incredible to think these magnificent birds are being shot at in Malta. Have contributed to the fund and tried to make as many people as I can aware of the campaign via Flickr. Wish I could get over there and help! Good luck tomorrow.
Chris, you are doing a wonderful thing by bringing this to everyone's attention. I hope everyone acts - visit Chris's site to write to MEPs and donate if you can!
No excuse for hunting, seeing hunting paranoia in these clips. Malta would make so much more money out of its natural history through tourism. Doing a great job Chris.
thank you for doing this amazing work, its wonderful to see someone who cares so much about birds. i am maltese and i enjoy watching birds migrating in spring and autumn but i have sadly also seen birds being shot.
Malta should never have been allowed to join the EU until this senseless killing stops. As a scuba diver I have said "no thanks" to a lot of dive trips to Malta because of the hunting.
What sad inadequates, getting their pleasure from such senseless slaughter. No bravery, no skill, small birds versus big men with powerful guns... they must be so proud! I'm sure it must make all the people of Malta proud to think that THIS is what many people now associate with their beautiful and historic island.
If the EU had a genuine interest in conservation - it would be a simple matter to enforce their laws by economic sanctions on Malta. But of course they have no genuine interest. Remember, hen harriers have been exterminated as a British mainland breeding bird by North Yorkshire gamekeepers. We are suffering from a pro-hunting ruling regime. Osborne has described birds as a feathered impediment to economic progress. The Maltese hunters are treating the migrating birds as their property and in the course of this are depriving the rest of Europe of their presence for the summer.
eman portelli So two wrongs make a right huh Eman? Both Malta AND Lebanon are behaving disgustingly, - illegal shooting in Lebanon doesn't make illegal shooting in Malta any better! Also, Lebanon isn't part of the EU. The EU should freeze its contribution to Malta immediately until you get your house in order. You recieved 112 MILLION Euros between 2007-13 - ec.europa.eu/esf/BlobServlet?docId=105&langId=en And I suspect you'd miss it if it dried up.
Well done Chris - keep on keeping on. I truly admire your self-control in the face of such provocation, and am not sure I could trust myself to keep my cool in the way you do (bet you're seething internally tho'!) Unfortunately I suspect people at the highest political level in Malta are sanctioning this, and until they have good financial or political reason to do otherwise, it'll be business as usual. The irony, as you well point out, is Malta could be the number 1 birding destination in the Med, and the amount of tourist cash this would generate would surely make up for the loss of thuggish kicks these unreconstructed macho bufoons would feel.

If the police have nothing to hide why are they concerned about being filmed? They are investigating a potential crime, which in the public interest, should be transparent and in the EU public domain. Whilst acts of barbarism against wild birds unfortunately take place in the UK, they are also observed, sometimes filmed, and actively protected by both the Police and over a million citizens who support wildlife charities in this task. Not withstanding that more can still be done to improve on this, the scale of killing is relatively small compared to the Killing Fields of Malta. Your Country is lovely, but you do it no favours condoning such mindless vandalism of your wildlife resources. I will not be visiting again.

I agree with Lynda J, also where ever this is happening it needs to be public knowledge, Chris Packham I am sure would be part of trying to bring to an end any act of cruelty either here in the UK or in the world. He has been on television here for many years and you can see how passionate he is about what he has seen and learnt. We need to preserve our wildlife for people in the future, it is our responsibility to make sure our planet stays a beautiful place.
Philip - it's only day 2. Personally I would count the illegal killing of protected species as we do if someone was caught killing peoples' pets, or farm animals, not in millions, but individually. Each one illegally killed should be a serious crime with tough penalties, starting with the permanant confiscation of gun licenses for those caught and destruction of guns.
421mog Yes it is actually day two indeed....but before Packham we had Mr Wonka himself (Bill Oddie) who in fact recorded absolutely nothing except for the usual suspects and assumptions...even though the hunting season opened on the 12th of April....and you know why he reported nothing?....because there is nothing to report.....facts and figures were intentionally inflated by BLM just to convince the credulous....and you were taken all for a ride by Birdlife Malta...the Maltese way...lol
421mog It s only day 2 since Mr. Packham started to upload videos. But he is already a week here in Malta, apart from the fact that the season has been already open since 12th of this month, A simple calculation, shows that aprox. 10,000 registered hunters for this special season multiplied (x) by the number of days since the opening (i.e 12 days) gives an astonishing figure of 120,000 hunters. Now 3 incidents divided by so many hunters x 100 = GIVES A MINIMAL PERCENTAGE OF 0.0025% (which still should nt be)
So sad to see a man who cares so much about birds and nature having to do this for us all. Why should the hunters be protected, the bird have just completed an amazing journey to be faced with this, good luck Chris, thank you for these films I didn't know this happened until now.

We need to preserve our wildlife for people in the future, it is our responsibility to make sure our planet stays a beautiful place.
Packham where are the millions fo birds being shoot by Maltese hunters that you promise us to see or it is all liessss ???????
Philip - it's only day 2. Personally I would count the illegal killing of protected species as we do if someone was caught killing peoples' pets, or farm animals, not in millions, but individually.
Each one illegally killed should be a serious crime with tough penalties, starting with the permanant confiscation of gun licenses for those caught and destruction of guns.

Yes it is actually day two indeed....but before Packham we had Mr Wonka himself (Bill Oddie) who in fact recorded absolutely nothing except for the usual suspects and assumptions...even though the hunting season opened on the 12th of April....and you know why he reported nothing?....because there is nothing to report.....facts and figures were intentionally inflated by BLM just to convince the credulous....and you were taken all for a ride by Birdlife Malta...the Maltese way...lol
421mog It s only day 2 since Mr. Packham started to upload videos. But he is already a week here in Malta, apart from the fact that the season has been already open since 12th of this month,
A simple calculation, shows that aprox. 10,000 registered hunters for this special season multiplied (x) by the number of days since the opening (i.e 12 days) gives an astonishing figure of 120,000 hunters. Now 3 incidents divided by so many hunters x 100 = GIVES A MINIMAL PERCENTAGE OF 0.0025% (which still should nt be)
Mind your own buisness and go and check what your country are doing
F#cking people! Unreal. Good work mr. P.
shooting rabbits ok ??????
