      As a 50's Plus woman who has survived TWO do-little husbands, I don't find Bob's comment at all presumptuous or insulting. You would be shocked at the numbers of great big men who cannot hammer a nail or use a drill, or hang a cabinet, nor even hang a curtain rod ( straight ).

    I am a stroke survivor I'm in a wheelchair with very little use of my left leg and no use of my left arm and hand. I found your videos on TH-cam and I would love to live in a van and travel but I can't drive because I am legally blind with macular degeneration. My husband refuses to do this. He's a city boy..I am a country girl. My strokes have me wanting a bucket list because I may have a stroke that may take my life. My last stroke involved a helicopter to a major hospital and surgery that got a larger clot that they said was big enough to take my life. None of the doctors at 2 hospitals could find where the clots are coming from. I am feeling a lot of wanting to travel, but my husband refuses. I am living through others on TH-cam I love your videos!

      Hi Wanda, wow, here I was just complaining to my hubby about a little hand injury that is simply an annoyance that is keeping me from using my skillsaw this week. Thank you for reminding me that for many people, physical mobility is not an option. I am sorry for your troubles and am so thankful that the internet brings travel and inspiration to us all! I've been binge studying these vids...taking notes, etc. I'm a 68 yr young divorced female with a young, adventurous attitude. Children/Grandchildren grown, I'm chomping at the bit to get out of the home and live with no encumbrances. My adult son is trying to talk me out of it. And, it may have worked. What a sweetheart! One of the things that is making me want to do this more and more is all the nice people I am "meeting" through all the videos and van tours. I am eager to meet all these folks in real life one day. Re Sassy's van, I am so impressed with how she did so much with so little money. It's inspiring! I might do my first van build like hers to last until later when I can save up enough to do all the fancy interior cabinets and stuff. And she is SO RIGHT about needing to set your intention. That tends to open up opportunities that take you closer to fruition.

    one good thing I found out. Bubble wrap is great insulation, particularly on windows. If you cut it to size is almost self sticks to the window with a spray bottle and a little water (may need take in the upper corners), you can use two layers if you like and the light comes in. If you need to peel it back to actually see out no problem. redampen and restick! It comes at wal mart in a large roll for about 16 dollars.

    Very impressed with how Sassy created a home out of a van. Talented and intelligent. It sounds so refreshing to shed some of our responsibilities and to set out on a different path, more freedom. I admire Sassy's enthusiasm and sense of adventure. I am not as courageous as Sassy, I would want to take my German Shepherd with me.

      @sassyc4560 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Shavauna, thank you. I did kind of wonder if I needed to suddenly become a 'dog person.' Accck! Not my area of expertise, to put it mildly, though I think a German Shepherd would a fine and loyal traveling companion make!
      But I decided to forge ahead on my own and believe me, my knees wobbled a time or two. Perhaps a common fear, it's usually the thought of of the unknown that stops me. Then if I go through with it, I'll look back and wonder why it took me so long -- although some of my adventures in life were more rash than rewarding. But I'm very lucky that life is whatever adventure I want to make it.

      Hi an non, thanks very much. I appreciate your kind comment. It has been over 8 years since I put my van together. I have made a few improvements but have not changed the footprint, as it has worked well. I added a charge converter for shore power and battery maintenance, and alternator charging while driving, and hung the solar panel on the outside driver's side where it can live, tilt, or come off for portable use. I scored and insulated a 65-yr old swing compressor fridge that works just great. Other than that everything's about the same and I still love it! All the best to you. Sassy

Me, I have to write every thought, draw every version, every view, think about how I'll use this or that. Then a year later I might tear half of it up and do something else.... which I've done in the van. Nevertheless, such fun. If you haven't, check out the Forum on Bob's website, cheaprvliving.com. Super video very informative. When someone says a Van or SUV is small to camp and sleep in..I just say its no different than camping in a tent in the woods for weeks at a time its better to be in a vehicle as you can move at will and its safer as well as insulated from the elements etc. MORE ADVENTURES MORE NATURE AND LESS BUYING STUFF makes people more fulfilled in this lifestyle.

    This was an awesome video! Sassy would be a great teacher to teach a basic 101 class on how to build the beds and set everything up from the beginning. The fear stops us from moving forward and Sassy empowered herself and figured out how to protect herself with just basics. Women who are trying to leave an abusive home,but don't know where to start could live in a van and keep themselves safe. These are important life skills that need to be taught. I would love to email Sassy to find out how she got started and what she started on first.

      Hello Cheryl. It's been a while since I visited this video, so I apologize for the delay in responding. I appreciate your comment so much. Bob has a forum on his Cheap RV Living website that has so much information about planning, saving, buying, designing, building, safety, budgeting, logistics and so much more. One of the forum sections is specifically for women, too. This would be a great place to visit to meet many full and part-time women vandwellers. They all have much to offer!
      I was fortunate to have some money to buy a van, but I had to set priorities. I opted for an older vehicle with mechanical soundness. I wanted "go" power so sacrificed gas mileage but knew the lower purchase price would help ease that issue. Once purchased, I set up a maintenance plan. Then I planned all the design and parts and costs in an Excel workbook, and once I had it all down -- and for me, that took a while -- and knew I could do it, I just put on some music and got to it. If you do visit the Cheap RV Living forum, you can see my van build by typing Sassypickin's Van into the search box. I need to update that one of these days as of course I can't not fiddle with things!
      Best to you! Sassy

      My pleasure and thanks, Angela! Scrounging around for stuff did help me hold the available money for the more expensive things like insulation and wiring components and solar. I've since installed a shore power converter/charger which is so nice to have. Next is the 3rd source to charge the house batteries -- using the van alternator. Wish me luck; I think I'm gonna need it!

    I watched this video along time ago.... grateful that it popped up out of nowhere for me to watch ...... prefect timing ! I decided I would get a Chevy Express/Savana and get the Hightop install. Wish Bob would have covered the van model, details regarding the purchase and the hightop installation... heard something vaguely mentioned toward the end ... of course this vid is older.... I like how Bob does 2 videos now when he interviews someone. Ohh Sassy wish you had an email I got questions !

    • @lottietunes3541
      @lottietunes3541 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Sassy:
      Believe it or Not, you and I had about the same history with Math and Algebra. Back in those "Good Ole Days" girls were not expected to do much more than marry, have babies, and keep house, Nobody took time to help us fill in the gaps in our learning.
      There were no Tutors attached to the school programs and no After -School study programs to help us catch up.
      But as a young adult, I decided to go on to college, and had to submit to testing as pre-requisite to admission for certain courses... (Nursing).
      The Testing results showed that my weaknesses began at the 3rd grade level, with the Multiplication Table's .
      YES, I began to go to night school and studied "Remedial Math".
      YES, it made a tremendous difference. I passed my Nursing Course!
      And... I learned that I am NOT so "Dumb" after all.
      So, now I want to learn how to set up a Home on Wheels, like yours!!

    Sassy is definitely a strong willed gal and she seems to have a pretty good grasp on things so she will do well, especially having her husband to partner with her should they decide to go full-time with it. That's a nice van she has too but, it needs a lot more storage in my opinion and there's plenty of space in that model van to do countless designs for custom living on the road. Another great video Bob, thanks for sharing.

      Hi Bo, glad you like the van. Yes, the possibilities are many for a big cargo van like this one! There's another video here of one very much like this that is built out beautifully with lots of upper and lower storage. I just chose not to and so far we have plenty of storage for all food, clothing, outdoor setup, medical, auto supplies and tools, hardware, cleaning supplies, entertainment gizmos, games and books, bedding, water, oh, and us! If I get tired of looking at stuff hanging in cargo nets I may build some corrugated signboard cupboards. Sassy

      Sassy C that's what my mother & father always called our old navy-blue couch, when I was a child. They were from the South, so I don't know if that term was regional, or if it had to do with the fact that my mom was a voracious reader and she saw it in a book or magazine; or if it was a style of sofa??? We kids switched to "couch" or "sofa" when we moved from Tennessee to Ohio, and all the northerners (no, we didn't say Yankees) would look at us funny when we would say something like "Have a seat on the davenport." They would always say, "On the what!?!" We thought "sofa" was too "la-dee-dah," only for rich folks or Hollywood, so we mainly called it a couch from then on. (: I love it that you said "davenport" - I can trust you, now. lol!

    Sassy C. I noticed you made a few remarks that were funny. I waited for Bob to laugh or something, but all I heard were crickets. Does he laugh or does he edit it out? His poor dog was so hot, wandering around in the background. Probably looking for a drink. But that was very courteous of Bob asking if it was OK if Cody came in. Very nice set up. One of the better ones I've seen. Have fun and stay safe!!

      Hi Kim, thank you! Bob has a great laugh. He may have been focusing on the video job. At the RTR there were water bowls all over the place for the dogs. They'd slurp it up and then keeping panting anyway, to circulate their air and help cool them down. Cody was happy to stick with Bob and keep up on things.
