    For Frankenstein I have to recommend the 1818 edition. It has some more interesting and revolutionary themes within it that Shelley has to tone down for the later release.
    A good rule of thumb is that if a copy of Frankenstein doesn’t say 1818 on it, it’s the newer edition because the 1818 version wasn’t really being analysed until more recently.

    An acquaintance of mine who was a horror novelist told me many years ago that everyone in the genre respected Stephen King immensely, because even though he was the most successful horror writer of the century, he still sat down everyday and wrote like he was starting out and remained dedicated to the craft. He also told me King's editor would still sometimes send back his stuff, saying "Stephen, this just isn't good enough," and he'd rewrite it.

    Few book series I recommend:
    Animorphs
    The Saga of Darren Shan (Cirque du Freak) Fantastic vampire series that also has a fantastic manga adaptation (the novels are still superior though)
    Deltora Quest
    Fablehaven
    Nightmare Academy
    And an individual book: 172 Hours on the Moon, great horror novel.
    From Stephen King, definitely the IT novel.

    I love Richard Matheson's I Am Legend and I agree that none of the film adaptations have come close to truly capturing the experience of that book. Of the other short stories included in that particular printing of the book, I think my favorite was a story called The Near Departed. For some reason, that one always stuck with me. If you're interested, there's a couple of TV movies that Richard Matheson wrote in the early 1970s that later helped inspire The X-Files and they still hold up today. The first one is called The Night Stalker and its sequel is called The Night Strangler. They're both about a reporter named Carl Kolchak who investigates a number of grisly murders that may or may not be the work of a vampire and/or other supernatural phenomenon.
    Since you seem to gravitate toward the horror genre, I would recommend you check out Michael Crichton's books The Terminal Man, Eaters of the Dead and Prey. They aren't your typical horror stories by any means, but they might be more up your alley than some of his other works.
    Also, since you took the time to comment on some film adaptations of Stephen King's books, I just wanted to say that The Running Man is easily one of the worst film adaptations I've ever seen.

  • @DeuceRumbo
    @DeuceRumbo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fun fact about Desperation, King wrote a sort of alternate universe version of the story (still centered around the demon Tak) under the pen name Richard Bachman called The Regulators. I love both but Regulators was one of the first King books I ever read and it stuck with me. I highly recommend it if you haven't read it.

    I love these videos. My fave ones are you being you, and I feel relaxed and happy seeing people talk about things they love. I cant get into fiction books I get distracted to much. But some of these do sound interesting.
    Some suggestions for more BB vids. Music. Your fave CDS as tapping on the cases or ipad screen if theyre digital would be *ok hand emoji*. And also cultesc Tv shows. Stuff that isnt "the thing to watch" and dont get recommended much. For example how EVERYONE recommends things like Breaking Bad or whatever is trending on Netflix. As a Brit I feel like we have loads of shows that not eveyone will have seen but are definately worth a watch like Garth Marenghi's Dark Place or Inside No9! I feel like they are your sort of thing if you havent seen them btw. Defintely excited for more chill talking videos, Id listen to you read the Dictionary in all fairness. Thanks for keeping us all entertained and relaxed. Stay safe.

    The film of Dr S is much more true than The Shining, though due to how the shinning ended, the final third of DrS tends to differ. Also, running man is the Arnold swartzenager (sp?) movie, but that is VERY different than the book. Finally, I highly recommend The Long Walk. Forever been my favorite King novel, and it’s one of his darker ones. Also Salem’s Lot and Under the Dome are great.

    Also, I can tell you from personal experience that if you've been saddled with a surname like, say, "Finkelstein," and you get tired of the kids in elementary school calling you "Frankenstein," that whipping out the fun fact about Frankenstein being the scientist NOT the monster doesn't help in the slightest. Not only do they NOT stop calling you Frankenstein, they also may decide to beat you up for being a smart-ass.

    Oh! "Frankenstein" is sooo underrated. Deep below the surface, it's really about individuals who bring a life into this world, and either abandon it completely or do a horrible job raising it. The book highlights the horrifying consequences of such actions.
    Also, when you're done with the book, might want to pick up Mary Shelly's "The Last Man." Very first Apocalypse novel of its kind. Far from perfect. The title gives it away, and in the very first sentence of the novel; we find out exactly who the last man left on Earth is. Also, the book takes place hundreds of years into the future. But technology of all kinds has remained stagnant since the 1820s. So a few problems, but it is the very first such novel.
    Then again, considering humanity is decimated due to a planetary pandemic outbreak, maybe not the ideal novel to read at this particular point in time. Sorry Jen.

      Ask someone what the novel is about. Guaranteed that you if you ask 100 people, *maybe* one of them will tell you that it's about irresponsible parenting or child abandonment; maybe. The rest will say it's a classic monster story with the vast majority thinking the monster's name is Frankenstein. That's why it's underrated.
      "The Picture of Dorian Gray" suffers from the very same issue. It gets dismissed as a good, classic horror. Dig deeper into the story, and what you find is a horrendous cautionary tale that many would use as a How-to Manual to live their lives. It's the only novel that seriously made me re-consider my very negative beliefs regarding censorship. That novel is truly dangerous. No one under 30 should read it. Thankfully very few bother to scratch the surface of it. It _is_ a cautionary tale. But many decide to enjoy the very thing such tales warn against.
      "The Prince" by: Machiavelli is a perfect example of what can easily happen to a cautionary tale. It's been used as a How-to Manual by every single ruthless dictator on the face of this planet for decades upon decades. Caused countless deaths and suffering. The author would be horrified if he knew what those men did with his book.

    • @cutecheerfreak1
      @cutecheerfreak1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      NGMonocrom it’s not underrated, one of the most praised novels ever. Also it’s a meme at this point to insist people don’t know the man is Frankenstein, lol. Basically everyone knows that I think some people keep saying it at this point because they think it’s funny. Anyone who has actually read this ultra famous classic knows it is actually about reckless parenting and abandonment, that’s the thing about classics most people don’t get around to reading them because they have already heard/watched so many interpretations of the story it’s very uninteresting to them at that point. I personally think it is in fact worth the read and praise it gets, and the book is by far the best telling of Shelley’s story and people would enjoy it if they sit down and actually get through the setting of the novel. It is is no way, form, shape, or by definition of the term underrated however lol
