Enjoyed WBY... I enjoyed hearing Paul's thoughts on the specials and how they are choosing to celebrate in a way we arent really use to seeing. I don't know if it was the best kind of episode for a Doctor that currently only has the 3 special episodes to really shine, feels in that context a bit of an odd choice, it would totally make sense in a regular series worth of eps but in a set of 3? Regardless the episode itself was fun and freaky, and I appreciate the TTC/Flux mention very much so. As much as I enjoyed it I don't think it's one I would rewatch again and again like I do with something like Flux but im looking forward to The Giggle. Also don't think I'm ready to let 13 go just yet either 😭 but I'm really looking forward to 15! With people thinking maybe past Doctors would return and stuff, obviously now we know thats unlikely but it would seem even the BBC thought that RTD might bring back modern Docs for the 60th because I believed it was in the Radio Sakro podcast that Chibs said he was told he could use classic Doctors and not modern ones. Because they wanted to be able to use them in the anniversary, and I feel like if even the BBC thought that would be how it was celebrated it makes sense fans would too. It's a bummer that they didn't allow Chibs to at least ask them if they would be interested in being in tPotD since they arent in the 60th.
When the specials were announced, i was at first definitely disappointed that this is what RTD was picking to do for the 60th, but i came up with a theory that i think with these first 2 episodes holds true to me. With POTD already having the typical feature length anniversary special that celebrated the classic era doing that again right away would feel repetitive, so i think the 60th is more of a meta celebration of NewWho as a whole before starting brand new with Ncuti. 3 showrunner eras = 3 specials The Star Beast focused on the companion's family with a weird looking alien creature, very much reminiscent of RTD's original run Wild Blue Yonder had the mystery and creepier villains seen in Moffats eta The Giggle: Direct connection to Classic like Chibnall's Master (not to mention Toymaker was literally referenced in his era) So in essence, RTD brought back the last duo he worked with for a "victory lap" of how the show has evolved/changed since he left
Interesting theory. The idea that the specials celebrate what the show can do, not what it has done, intrigues me. As I said in the ep, I didn’t expect past or modern Doctors but I did think these episodes would do more than just focus on S4 basically. I’m torn - they’ve been good, very good but leave me wanting…something more. Excited to see what happens on sat and where we go next though. Geoff
David Tennant is the modern equivalent of Tom Baker. - extremely well known by the general public as the personification of Doctor Who. More so than any of their predecessors or successors. And it's the general public that brings in the ratings. Doctor Who is, and always has been, supposed to be Saturday evening entertainment for the viewing public, - which you touch upon in this video - and, unfortunately, a lot of (most?) fans miss as a point. It's not made just for us.
We’ve talked about that in other episodes too - it’s got a wide audience to try and appeal to and like you say, it’s not just made for us. Those episodes some people think are silly, are liked by kids. Mine liked Star Beast, but they wouldn’t have liked WBY! Geoff
Whilst as you know my expectation and hype was non existent leading up to the 60th episodes ....but oh my days these two episodes are the worst since fear her like genuinely ....can't believe these are approved to be televised let alone put on screen to commemorate the 60th ... Power of the Doctor was my jumping off point I feel that worked as a joint successor to day of the doctor .... Compare TSB and WBY to day of the doctor and it's LEAGUES apart! Doesn't help that I'm not the biggest fan of Tate and a whole episode of Tennant and Tate for an hour is not my idea of a good time I commend the mention of flux and timeless Child ...but this is infantile rubbish sadly ... Any nuance and finesse that was there in the show is now gone ... I hope for the future and that it has its fans but it's really not for me ... If the leaks of the giggle are to be believed I can't see viewers of Tennant's specials sticking around for Ncutis ers sadly if it's going to be more of the same I'd be very surprised 💙💙✨
