ERIC JOHNSON WASH D.C. PT.1 1990 RARE SHOW JUST AMAZING GUITAR PLAYER

- No doubt Eric Johnson is one of the all time great guitarists around. After all the greats came and went. I never thought guitar players would get me going again. But Eric Johnson and Stevie Ray Vaughan were two of the 1980`s master players. For a while no one could touch Eric Johnson. He still is playing on a high level of greatness. Few players can get to his greatness. He has the songs and great vocals, to round things off. This rare footage of E.J. is one of many in my archives. I shot Eric at a few shows back around 90-93. At one show Eric had 2 go go dancers on stage with him in mini skirts during a Jimi Hendrix song. Really nice footage. It will make an historic debut on my channel. The footage has been in my archives since it was shot. Of course I watched it back in the day. I remember the guitar hero phase was making a big comeback with Stevie Ray Vaughan leading the way with Eric and Jeff Healey helping the cause. Also Joe Sat,Steve Vai. But once the sad day S.R.V. passed on, the whole guitar movement died down. But for a while it was a super time, which would of grown but Stevie was needed.
I would highly recommend you see Eric Johnson in concert. He is in a small number of players, who get to a level of greatness, with the mind to write amazing songs like High Landrons, Cliffs Of Dover, 40 mile town to name a few of many.
Absolute peak EJ here. Just sooo dialed in. Incredible! Tks for posting
Wow. EJ is at the top of his game here. "Trademark" is especially otherworldly.
0:00 - Righteous
4:25 - High Landrons
11:23 - Tribute To Jerry Reed
13:12 - Trademark
18:05 - The Wind Cries Mary
22:10 - S.R.V
25:22 - Soulful Terrain
Thank you for this song list. Soulful Terrain got cut off, hope to find P2 of this performance. Very well made, love that vocals come through so well.
@@helenks724 I have parts 1-4 downloaded. Anytime I see this footage, I instantly archive and back it up. If there is a way I can send it to you, let me know.
@@SagaTF2 could you email it? Or I have an iPhone, could set up a music account save it there.
Thank you so much. This is the best program recording I’ve heard. Any suggestions on a way for me to download?
@@helenks724 I can email you parts 1-4 if you'd like, just let me know what your email is
SHOWOFF! I witnessed his concerts in this era - most beautiful LOUD you ever heard - volume more majestic than the biggest metal acts - except it was also PRETTY!! Super acid rock/good trip music!
This recording is terrific
I was shocked at how loud his show was when I saw him in the early 90s. But the sound was really good.
The golden era of EJ
Saw him in 1990 in Houston for the first time. Amazing
Saw this tour at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk, Va. I actually have a cassette recording of the show. First time I saw him and was blown away!
Hello CRA... I fully agree with you regarding Ej being in a very small group of musicians past or future that have or will ascend to such a level of ability. Where I think Ej and SRV depart from so many other players is the spiritual and or soulful quality. Not just technical or fast, but tone and technique used for more than flash and show. This spirit fills their playing. I could go on for hours, I was fortunate to see many shows over the last 35 years. Just like a singer's voice changes over time, Ej has changed as he has aged, yet he holds true to the same sound as ever. IT emanates from within. Ah Via Musicom had just dropped and it was Eric's time in the spotlight. Amazing, this album still holds up after 33 years. I saw this tour in San Francisco at the Warfield theatre. The sound was so loud, yet didn't hurt my ears one bit. It was other worldly show. I stood there wishing it didn't have to end.
BTW... thank you for filming and sharing this awesome show and place in time!
One of the things i like about this footage is its a big slap in the face to all the fans who never shut up about virginia, i think this is the strat he got back in the late 80s from the guy who runs albalone vintage
Yeah, it appears to be the ‘65 from the “Venus Isle” booklet based on the color, fretboard, and “Fender” font unique to that year. According to an old issue of “Guitar Techniques,” he used it to record “SRV.” Wild to actually see a video of him playing it.
That was A 65 strat he got and it was James Browns guitarist's guitar right after he found this one he found the 65 Dakota in Ft Worth and had just got back from the guitar show in Dallas so he bought the red one also..The flanger he is using here I own now. The Strat is Lake Placid blue and had a transition headstock Ed Reynolds did the fretwork on that guitar he lived down the street from me in Oak Cliff near Austin. not that im a stalker or anything hahahahhaha
@@ronfrey5327 Eric sold this 1965 Lake Placid Blue strat to Steve Brown of One World Music in Austin in about 1998. I played it and had intended to buy it; however, when I played it, the strings were so close to the fret metal that they rattled and I thought something was wrong with it. Steve said that's how Eric setup this guitar. I didn't buy it. The very low action shows Eric's feather approach to fretting.
@@ronfrey5327great intel! I didn’t know that
@@ronfrey5327what’s the flanger?
That Trademark was awesome!
Thank you so much 💓
This is a master class.
The way he harmonizes during the first solo of S.R.V. at 23:35 is so soothing for the soul.
This crowd was fn awesome lol. Love hearing folks get that pumped about EJ!
Please post more Eric Johnson shows i need them as hell!!
Have more. Need to find machines to transfer to video. Eric is one of the best players I have seen. I have him with Go Go Girl dancing on stage during a Hendrix song S.C.Magic and it is so amazing.
@@classicrockarchives7077 Yeah i remember that. That S.C.M. cover with the girl dancing was already uploaded many years ago.
EJ is my holy grail guitarist ever. I really hope you could upload soon more from him. Thank you and keep up the good work
@@RickyLandi First time I saw Eric was 1982 at Rockefeller's in Houston. The guy who built my guitars told me about him and I didn't want to go. He told me "go see this guy. Believe me!!!". So I did. Changed my life. I decided to go to college after that show. I've just played for fun since 82.
I was at that show!
Wow I was there I think this. Is the show he had had trouble worn equipment. It took like 40 minutes to get started. But it was worth it. He came out after and Talked to us guitar nerd s. Got a pick, still have it
😭😭 fuckk yesss!!! Thank you for this!
Sound isn't great but his playing is a marvel🎉
Video tape degrades. So yeah...by all means.
Could the audio be cleaned up?
Where part 2?
OMG!!!! Thanks so much!!!!! I have been desperately archiving all EJ shows I can find, as Im scared that they wont be there from copyright or youtube as a whole goes down.
Thanks!!! Please, please upload more. I'll literally pay you for any other shows you have
Do you have the concert before ACL 88? He was wearing a white sweater and sandals!!!
@@alexpa4235 i have that one, don't know how to send you it tho
hopefully this doesnt get pulled down
must...have...the...rest...lol
ballpark figure, how much never heard before footage do you think you've amassed of EJ's live performances??
What a beautiful blue strat.. too bad it was stolen :(
The Dumble BLEW UP in 1996.
It was 1993.
@@ejtonefan Really? I never heard that. Did Howard fix it?
@@johndboran No, Howard would not fix it. I heard Eric sold his SSS to Stephen Bruton; I don't know who owns it now. Do some Google research and you should find out about the details.
