I have the honour to meet Art Blakey in Cadiz,Spain. In the band Wynton and Branford Marsalis, early 80's. Super group, and although was already a veteran,he always sounded fresh and composed. Jazz drums at its best.
I didn't realize that Istanbul was the successor to K Zildjian. "That's no K!" definitely describes a lot of Ks from the 80s and 90s, but the old As from the 40s and 50s were quite good, and there's a lot of new stuff from them that's great these days.
Some context that I didn't know before this: there were actually _two_ recording bans in the 1940s, the first from 1942-1944, and the second in 1948. So yeah, Petrillo _was_ a real jerk, and Mel was being diplomatic.
