I think Dowager finally came to understand how wonderful Ruyi was and was actually ashamed of how she misjudged and mistreated Ruyi early on.
Emperor continued to evade accountability. He wasn't even man enough to admit his fault and apologize to her. So pitiful. My heart broke for her, she held out hope for at _least_ that and was again sorely disappointed. 💔
Yanwan never came to realize _her_ actions brought her to that state. She remained haughty and blaming others.

😢 it’s really sad!! Her love for Hongli and her heart has disintegrated, signified by her burning her own image!! It’s truly tragic…. If it’s possible to turn back time and if Hongli married Ruyi from the beginning, the history of the dynasty would have been very different and a lot more successful!! 😔

Ruyi accepted her fate, she understood that her Hongli was gone. The emperor evolved and changed. Gone were the days of running around the place. She freed herself and never again an Ula-Nara clans woman stepped foot in the forbidden city to join the royal household

I was so mad he never apologized. He finds out everything he did and accused ruyi of doing was all done by another woman, and he doesnt even apologize. Just tells her to leave it all in the past. In the end, his pride was the most important thing to him, because of a title as Emperor. Her ultimate fuck you was her dying while never revealing she was sick. He did her that favor of letting her be buried alone and not with him, he knew he ultimately fucked uo their entire relationship and love and that there was no going back, even in death. Its crazy how both Ula-Nala ladies were both empresses in love, but one begged to be buried with the emperor while the other wanted nothing to do with him in life and death. Her cutting her hair was saying he lost her completely, from his own actions.
And I know history has no idea why the emperor destroyed all her records and paintings, but I hope this story is accurate to why that is, it makes the most sense. I heard Ruyis actress portrayed the real Ula-Nala Empress perfected in terms of demeanor and personality.

I like the way the story shows how terrible the consort system was and how ultimately the consort system exploited women and left them vulnerable to power addicted narcissist sadistic misogynists like this character Hong Li. Never again should this happen

“Sometimes I think in this palace, I endured bitterly all my life. But to be like Ruyi, to sustain her love only. Just which one of us is the free one?”
Empress Dowager’s statement. I analyze them dated back to the series Zhen Huan. She never wanted to enter the palace but after she did, all she wanted to live long, getting old along with her true love. As you know how things turned out for her….
She compares herself to Ruyi. They both wanted love when they were young. Ruyi hold onto it til her downfall and want no power unlike The Dowager who chose to put it behind (even though she can’t 100% did that) and climbing up for power, seeking revenge.
“Just which one of us is free?”
It implies that Ruyi is still alive, emperor is still alive but she has cut her hair, no tie and bond. Is she the one who’s free?
    Or
The Empress Dowager who is sitting on the position that is undoubtedly the highest for women in the whole empire, living most luxurious but lost all of her loved ones, living a very long life but can no longer makes her youthful dreams came true.
