      Here the caustics of acid house met the dark sax of Lost Highway... and they all made friends. Listeners are still trying to make sense.
      Sense, or sensory, or nonsensical... I'm just loving it!

    I have so much respect for how willing he is to take creative risks. I think the later half of his career is a lot like Bowie’s in that he was done with simply making rock and instead of retiring decided to do whatever he wanted. I’ll always be a fan.

    i like how, unlike most bands, trent keeps coming up with music worth listening to instead of most who keep making albums, trying to keep their "old" musical spirit alive. trent and nin are just fucking eternal.

    It almost seems as if some people would prefer Trent had stayed a suicidal junkie and repeatedly made one Downward Spiral after another.
    Don't get me wrong I love those albums but I love this new stuff too and I'm glad my favorite musician has a family and is happy and doing what he wants to do

    • @HubbaBubba768
      @HubbaBubba768 6 ปีที่แล้ว +77

      He admitted he was thinking about killing himself when he was writing the Fragile and he certainly had some kind of drug problem back then though I'm not sure exactly what drug he was on.
      As for the blandness? well that's like your opinion man.

    • @DuggieDug111
      @DuggieDug111 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Truedag101 He doesn’t have to be a suicidal junkie to add heavy riffs to his albums. I think he purposely chose to go a different route regardless of his personal situations

    • @JackSutterEtc
      @JackSutterEtc 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This wasn't really a change of direction as much as a watering down of what he's done before. Same stuff, stripped down to seem more "minimalist" but it - at least to me - just seems lesser, or lazier. Or both.
      Maybe if he was still a suicidal junkie he'd give less of a fuck about being "experimental" and just be hard hitting and high impact. You can change styles radically and style retain your bite (ref. Marilyn Manson & the difference between Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals, and Holy Wood, all of which were stylistically and symbolically different, and all of which had some serious fucking kick to them that's recognized, for each individually, to this day). Trent lost his bite. He's not saying anything, or at least not anything identifiably meaningful to me. Respect to those who disagree but I gotta tell you (as a long time NIN fan who likes almost all of his newer stuff as well as all of his older stuff): I find this to be a boring song.
      (I just re-listened to it to make sure my initial reaction wasn't off base, and yeah, I kind of doubt this one will grow on me, it's repetative and meaningless, other than the ambience being derivative (not reminiscent, derivative) of some of Bowie's last songs and how close he got to that really feels more like ripping off than giving tribute, but whatever, that's just what I think, I'm sure plenty of other people like this song, just as I'm sure I'll inevitably like most of the tracks off of this new NIN album, but yeah, not impressed).

    • @JackSutterEtc
      @JackSutterEtc 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also, I might like this more in the context of the entire album so, my judgement on this track as a stand alone might be different than what I think about it in the overall scheme of the track list, so, I guess we'll see how it fits in after it's released. I'm hoping the other tracks can carry, or build on, or add to this one somehow.

    Sax is the best part of this song. It gives a trippier feel to the urgent drums and makes the synths sound so much more disturbing.

    • @point-xn4tu
      @point-xn4tu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      He really gave me a new appreciation for the sax. It occupies a sonic space that is both low and high, and just really dominant.
      It is the acid bass before there was acid bass... then he had to go and add acid bass... shit is next-level!

      feu I enjoy the choices made by Reznor and company from a production standpoint. From the frenzied drumming and atmospheric saxophone to the urgent arpeggiated synths and hollow vocals, it appears that Reznor sought to pay homage to and develop the ideas that Bowie and Tony Visconti presented on 'Blackstar', and also earlier albums like '1. Outside' with Brian Eno. Better?

    People, just because Trent stopped using heavy guitars in his songs doesn't mean y'all have to hate it, this shit (as well as all the other recent NIN stuff) fuckin slaps just as much as the older stuff. Be glad he still knows how to make banger music consistently.

      I think by "minimal" they mean more linear , there is less break like between a verse and a chorus like in older nin songs . Maybe its by definition less pop than other nin songs , the structure at least is less pop . Personnaly i like both approch . ps : sorry for my english

      It's absolutely paying homage to David Bowie's Blackstar, or at the very least David Bowie as an artist. He's been a life-long fan, and did a cover tribute at a concert after his death that you can find on TH-cam. Here, Trent even attempts to sing in a style that really does beg to be familiarised with Bowie. It's sad but beautiful knowing that, even two years on, major artists are still hurting from his passing.

    Kinda sounds "Bowie-ish" in the beginning with the saxophone and quiet, spoken vocals...but then the recognizing chaotic order of noise from the one and only Nine Inch Nails prevails.
    Awesome track T-Rez!!! U r a genius and giant in the Music Industry...been goin strong since the 80's wih Nails. I started listening to Nails since 93/94 and have been a devoted fanatic ever since the first time I listened to Pretty Hate Machine...been hooked like a junkie lol...Keep up the great work u and the bandmates create, your such a great musician to look upto in the industry, it would b nice to have more like u, but we have u!!! Thats all that matter!!,

      I disagree that it's original. It sounds like a bad impression of David Bowie to me, and the rest of the EP is the same, along with recycled synths and sounds from previous records. I wouldn't say it's bad, but I wouldn't say it's good, or that it's original.

    Great song. The only thing is that it requires numerous listens to fully appreciate. It's brave of NIN to go in this direction and create music that really takes time to get into, since most people won't listen that many times and think the song doesn't make sense. Anyway I listened yesterday and today morning while getting ready for work it was on repeat and giving me strength, love the atmosphere and mood it creates.

Even if the the last EPs' have some good songs, they didn't make me wanna go back.. I’m tired of that electro / piano Trent Reznor song style. Hidden Lyrics :
      We are a treacherous people
      As night falls down again
      In this house of dust
      The shades are drawn in
      All of the thousands of rooms
      We sleep hypnotized from the center
      Yes in this new place we call home
      Is there anybody but you sitting in the dark
      Wondering if you'll remove my skin
      Not so different after all
      Remove the pain or push it back in
      Maybe not so different after all
      That kind of thing just doesn’t happen here
      I didn’t think that could happen around here
      I didn’t think that could happen to me
      Can you see what is happening
      Pull it out, and push it back see,
      I’m not from this world not anymore
      Not me and i’ve come to believe that’s OK
      I know who i am yes,
      I believe i am sleeping after all

    You just wait. This song will fit in perfectly with the other songs on the album. This is a different NIN, affirmative. There's no reason to just spew hatred with all these knee-jerk reactions. Absolutely respect your opinion if it doesn't grow on you.

    I like it. This song seems like just one piece of a larger puzzle, and I am keen to listen to the album from start to finish to find out how those pieces all fit together.
