Even if you interpret "Night Prowler" as being a song about a stalker, who said an artist can never write from the perspective of the villain? As another commenter already mentioned, in "Dirty Deeds" Bon writes from the perspective of a contract killer and everyone loves that song. 'Fulsom Prison Blues' by Johnny Cash is also seen from the point of view of a cold-blooded murderer.
There are countless other examples. I reckon there is a part in most people that lowkey wanders what makes evil people tick, and that is a legitimate thing for any artist to explore.
Jim Sterling did a great video of this nature called "To Play The Villain" and explained it better than I could. It's a great video worth checking out.

"Night Prowler" is not about a stalker/serial killer/rapist. AC/DC stated that it's actually about a boy sneaking into his girlfriend's bedroom. Sure, there was that case where a killer/stalker did take inspiration from this song, but it was never the band's intention to encourage anything more than a naughty boy sneaking into his girlfriend's room for a good time.

A music artist spends a lot of time and effort into creating an album, Ash. Sometimes this creative time sends the artist mad, or breaks up the band, or, if you're Dave Gahan, of Depeche Mode, gives you the idea that being 'Heroin Christ' is a good one, and which damn near kills you. The very least you can do, is to listen to every beat, note, chord, and sample of that album from start to finish. That's why they are made, and why the tracks are sequenced the way they are.

The legendary artists made legendary albums. One good song is nice but just doesn't compare. Think of all the albums where one great song rolls into another: Dark Side of the Moon, The Joshua Tree, anything by Led Zeppelin. She said THE ARTIST not THE ALBUM. Like here's all of Pink Floyd's albums on shuffle so you hear different songs individually and in a random order. I don't understand why no one here in the comments gets that. If an album is meant to be listened to all at once all the time then why are singles released? Or maybe she's just not in the mood to hear a deep political album and just wants to listen to the band itself. There's nothing wrong with shuffling a bands songs on a playlist. That's pretty much the point of a playlist.

When I was a kid you saved your allowance or odd jobs money, bought an album, and listened to it front-to-back, all while reading the liner notes and studying the cover. If there was a song you didn't much care for, you gave it more than just that first chance. You eventually enjoyed it for its placement and band's effort in making it. You didn't get up and move the needle. Plus, you spent YOUR money on it so it wasn't as easily dismissible. [my $.02]

Ash I love you so much but, that's a terrible way to listen to an artist, it's ok to make playlists, shuffle albums sometimes and skip a song and stuff, but not to listen to the album in it's entirety ever ,the way it originally lays? It robs the artist of their original intent and vision for a project, a lot of work goes into constructing an albums flow and feeling, lots of albums i.e. Dark Side of the Moon (obviously) and Aqualung but also less well known albums like Phantom Planet's The Guest and the masterpiece that is Josh Ritter's So Runs The World Away are painstakingly constructed to elicit certain emotion or imagery. Albums are NOT just a collection of singles, although ppl today seem to see them as such. I am a musician and I can tell you my band spends a lot of time and effort just creating a vibe in our set lists, let alone in the studio on an album.... Just my probably unpopular opinion.... Absolutely agree. I come from the days before CDs existed, let alone digital music; so shuffle was never even a thing when I was growing up. The idea of shuffling an album, which has been meticulously planned to be heard in sequence, makes me twitch uncomfortably! *shudder*

If I was to listen to an Album as a whole creation then every single album I've ever listened to would go on the sucks pile. It's rare that I find more than 1 or 2 tracks on an album that enjoy everything else sounds like filler or worse annoying crap.
I get what your saying but for me the song itself has to speak to me.

"Escape" by Metallica is a nice song. You joke about it sounding like "teenage angst", but James was baaarely out of his teens by then. He was twenty when it was released, so he may very well have been a teenager when he wrote it.
Regardless, the song really spoke to me when I was fifteen or so. "Me against the world," I related to that. That's powerful, it's nothing to he ashamed of on James' part or anyone else's part.

It's not so much about the theme or lyrics of "Escape", but the songwriting. It's not a bad song per se, but it doesn't fit in with the rest of TRL's songs - no wonder as it was essentially a made-to-order radio hit song. The basic pop song structure, the chorus' vocal melody exactly following the guitar melody, and the chorus being in a major key simply are a rather jarring contrast with the rest of the album.

Firstly, I disagree with Ash. You can't just listen to an artist on shuffle all the time. Some albums are written to be experienced in order like anything by Tool or The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails.
Secondly, All in the Family ruins Follow the Leader by Korn. It features Fred Durst on vocals. I don't think I need to explain further.

Each song isn't a universe unto itself. Some hardly make sense outside of their album placement but are brilliant within it. Once albums stopped being "singles plus filler", they became constructive works unto themselves. Or you can tell Brian Wilson that Pet Sounds has a few nice tunes, but that's it.

I like the bluesy element it has but the howling and the singing are just rubbish. Like, One of these Day is brilliant, A Pillow of Winds is so relaxing, Fearless is brilliant for a number of reasons, San Tropez is also incredibly relaxing and makes me feel like I’m at the beach during the summer, and Echoes is a god damn masterpiece, but Seamus, I’m ngl, is a steaming hot pile of garbage. I honestly think that the song “he doesn’t know I’m alive” by Janet Jackson fits into this category. I almost equate it in the context of the control album to a damaged puzzle piece that while it may still fit somewhat with a narrative of a girl who is discovering herself and maturing into a young woman but still hasn’t quite figured it all out yet in the love department, it takes a little super glue or tape for it to really stick in your mind as a declarative statement beyond a surface level slice of puppy love. It was almost sort a step backward to the previous dream street era of a couple years prior which she was just given songs to sing without much emotional or lyrical input into its creation. It’s a song on that album that is pleasant to listen to as a slice of cute mid 80’s dance pop fluff but one that when put under close scrutiny of the album as a while if you were decide to skip over you wouldn’t really miss it.

Ash has a good point. Since I've copied and downloaded so much music on my computer, I use WinAmp to just shuffle through it--usually. But I grew up buying albums, not buying singles, except for the occasional 45, and some albums just really work well AS albums, concept album or not. So I also have a 'favorite albums' playlist for when I want to listen to the whole album, and not just individual songs.

I do agree that it was 4 great albums, one good album, but I lost all respect after the Napster fiasco.
People who were downloading their stuff from Napster fell in to two categories, people who owned EVERYTHING they released and were looking for anything else, and people who wouldn't have bought one of their albums in the first place. I was part of the first group, but lost all respect and bought nothing of their since.

I counted two bad songs on the White Album, "Wild Honey Pie" and "Revolution 9", as well as one song that gets too much credit. "Honey Pie", that little McCartney sung tune that's made to sound like a 20s song? Yeah, the Monkees did that a few months earlier on the Mike Nesmith track "Magnolia Simms", and went further with it by putting static in the background and adding a skipping effect. And yes, this song came after the Monkees broke from Don Kirshner's control, so they played their own instruments on it; they even produced it.
