Some may find Mona's hardcore feminism 'too much' but if you consider what is happening in the Middle East, we really do need radical feminisn to fight the patriarchy.
🤣🤣🤣. The mussel east has been pretty much the same for a looooong time. What do you think needs to change and why? Feminism has already ruined the western countries, look at how marriage rates are very low and how divorces and single mothers at are a high. I hope it doesn’t it reach Muslim countries.
'upper class women have a more protected existence.' She accuses Mona of using umbrella terms but saba overwhelmingly falls into generalisations. And no, women across the classes experience misogyny - laws affect everyone.
actually both of them have non-conflicting/interesting point of views when it comes to feminism that is fixated towards that region. just wish the debate was longer, anthropologically speaking, both of them would have wound up agreeing on a bottom process to repair the suffrage of gender equality, yet both are academics from different fields so interpretations differ. it is a touchy subject to avoid the constant ignorant dehumanization and orientalism conflated by western lenses whenever discussing arab regions.
I don't think it's fair to say they have "non-conflicting" points of views. Saba is very critical of the brand of liberal feminism that Mona seems to be espousing. I don't think there are even any common grounds where both of them could agree. I also would have loved to see an extended debate, I honestly think Saba would have eaten her alive.
That’s exactly what they want you to think. It’s not as easy as saying they follow the Quran and Sunnah. Do you know how many schools of thought there have been in all of Islamic history?Even the companions of the prophet use to disagree on matters of fiqh (Islamic law/ rulings). There are so many contradicting hadiths, that different scholars in the past have argued over what the prophet actually said. Throughout the whole history of Islam, people have always had different opinions and even interpreted words in the Quran differently, for example the hijab. For anyone to say it’s all black and white is ridiculous and had never been the case until pre-colonialism. Anyone reading this should research about the history of Saudi Arabia and the wahabi movement and there links to the British (Who btw named Saudi Arabia after the sa’ud family).
What on earth is Saba Mahmood talking about? She keeps attacking Mona Eltahawy for something she has not said about Arab culture. It's frustrating when people simply don't listen to what is being said.
***** I don't think I did miss the point. Religion, including Islam and Christianity is often used to justify uncivilized behaviour. Those assertions need to be challenged. That was the point Mona was trying to make. She was not arguing that Arab or Islamic culture was to blame. Saba Mahmood kept throwing that accusation at her as a "straw man" argument.
FreeAnalyst America has not religious affiliation and they used to hang people who were the same religion as them and has yet to elect a female head of state, why is that?
Solidarity from American agnostics. We need more feminists to take a bold stand against oppressive governments like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Feminists and egalitarians of all sorts from all over the world, behold a true warrior on the front lines of social oppression. We must defend women's rights and human rights around the world, not just in your hometown. The fight is now global. Unite or die.
Saba mahmoud seems like mb agent Anyways maybe it is not ok for outsiders to say there are problems in our culture mona never said she want to throw away our culture just reform it and get the bad apples out of the basket
Hagag Hamed that is how you have a 'debate'. Two people with DIFFERING views. Why is it not ok for outsiders to comment on 'our' culture. I am sure you comment on other cultures and countries of the world. Secondly it is better for everyone to hear two sides to every story, so you can reach an informed conclusion.
It's not my opinion that they shouldn't that's what I was getting from the conversation.. mona is still right our culture has been stagnant for centuries
Do you know what I find really pathetic about this Ch4 presenter when he starts attacking Mona Eltahawy? His ignorance is so profound he talks of Islamic culture. Islam is a religion not a culture. He gets paid a lot of money for his job. The least he could do is learn the basics before leading a debate that affects millions of muslim girls.
Egyptian: Why is she in the US spreading hate when she should be in Egypt defending women? Because that is too hard and there’s just not enough money in it...
Do you think men in Arab country will sit and be criticized by a woman? Women are not been given the platform to speak up against the injustice being done to them in the middle east. So do not say it is because of money.
Freedom I would never give up thank God I live in a country. That embraces it up per class. They have resources and should focus on getting their self out giving a man sex on demand look at your country running water a kitchen A bathroom decent development. Electricity that is a basic. Human right Education Stop Dis Respect and Beating one another .beliefs this is practice throughout the middle east as cultural in the name of religion they are fighting progress all the rich oil and resources
they saw what the white man did in europe and america and why they let women get away with harsh crimes especially firing men from their jobs with simple words and fake emotions.

Considering what is happening in the west we need radical Islam to fix Europe and America

playerjoe What exactly is your point here? As for America not having any religious affiliation, you must be joking.
FreeAnalyst What justified America's uncivilized behavior and misogyny.
playerjoe What sort of uncivilised behaviour and misogyny comes to mind when you speak of America?
Dr. Saba Mahmood was a giant.
this woman needs to understand that culture and cultural ideologies is primarly created and promoted by the upper political
No colonialism has. And saba is a trained anthropologist

Eye opening. Seperating opinion form fact and shedding light.
Awful woman if you can even call it that.
I think she's LGBT, lesbian maybe. No joke. She won't admit because Islam still exists on heterosexual norms.
@@binghamguevara6814 is it okay for you to spread proof less rumers about people's orientation... I see someone awful alright
omg. Mona El Tahawy was my art teacher.
Mona is amazing ❤️❤️

She has lived and protested in Egypt. She was beaten and arrested by Egyptian police.
Mona is like a mad

Saba Mahmood is a pick me
She died in 2018.
This whole Muslim culture or religion is just sick
You're sick
