Thanks for this, as a person who goes on holiday to the coast maybe once a year I never even heard of this. Would Carte Blanche not be interested in this?
Keep it up my man, expose these guys left right and center, hopefully with enough light shed on the issue something will be done, they are beautiful fish to catch but even more beautiful to see them swim off healthy.
It is hard pal...feels like im getting nowhere...but ok, this is a new year and a new season so eish...time to buckle down and get something done about this. Thanks btw
I was in Port St John's in September 2023. I saw the locals with a lot of garrick with scars on the sides and bloodied. They offered them for sale to us, which of course we refused. Discussion with other anglers that same weekend brought to light that these locals were not afraid to illegally jig the garrick cos the authorities turned a blind eye to the activity. Apparently the authorities were heard to say that as long as the locals do it ....
Yeah Tiger you are totally correct...the rot and corruption extends right down onto the beaches at PSJ. I have a new video coming soon, I was there again this year and witnessed and recorded it all first had all over again. Bakkies waiting in the carpark for illegally caught fish...DAFF just watching and doing nothing, but harassing tourists for fishing licenses...stay posted man
There is no concept of conservation in these local communities. It is a case of "Get what you can before someone else gets it" The sorry situation has been brought about by the absence of any real policing authority. You must see the guys finishing the crayfish on the north coast!
Hey Sean, when we were down there last week, we were told guys were jigging the day before and between 10 guys they each had a minimum of 3 Garrick! The next day we went down to 1 st rocks and witnessed guys jigging there and we saw in a space of 20mins 6 Garrick been jigged! Apparently there is a market for these fish. Some of these jiggers are provided with freezers and their electricity is paid for to man these. The buyer then comes to collect when these freezers are full. When you question some of the guys doing this they say they do it because they are hungry… they do it for a source of income. The market needs to be stopped and then we should have a handle on the issue of these fish being jigged. We were happy to meet DAFF there but they are so limited in terms of resources. I just wish the authorities would step up! Thanks for all that you and other conscious anglers do to make people aware and to educate people about sustainable fishing and to fish responsibly
Hey dude! Welcome to the permanent struggle! But ok, you have a good grasp on the situation. It's only gonna be up to us to somehow come up with the gumption and resources to 1. Incentivise tag and release with money (so damn easy), or 2. help DAFF as they continue to drop the ball, game after game (much harder). I believe you are on the south coast too, pop by I am at Spiller's Wharf these days...lots to talk about. Kent, you are one of thousands to even write to me. Nobody else seems to give a shit further than a post.
@@TheSardineNews yes I agree. We can never leave this to the authorities only. If every angler could raise awareness wherever they fish we would cover much more ground together. But sadly we not all that way inclined… This is why I push responsible and sustainable fishing on my channel in the hope that it may rub off! Yes a meet up will be great. Crappy weather this weekend but will give you a bell soon. My mate Darren has your details. He inquired about some fishing on the Umzimkhulu and we just havnt got round to it
wow I am from Port Elizabeth and been going to port st johns for years. This must be a fairly new trend as never noticed this before. Hope something can be done about this as it will have a effect on for years to come
@@TheSardineNews thank you for the reply They actually use to wash taxis with the river water there at that spot for years lol now there is a sign up no car wash. Sad to see what port st johns looked like 10 years ago till now although other trade shops opened a lot of tourist related places not there anymore
This is just sad to see, I've seen this even happen at Victoria Bay, saw one guy catch bags and bags full of small shad, undersized white steenbras and Kob. I'm happy to see some people are doing something about illegal fishing activities along our coastline.
There is an easy way to stop the jigging , steel cable and with big weights on both ends or lay down razor wire in the river weighted on both ends that will give the fish a chance to bread.
You know, I been thinking, you may have a point. A very adverse one, but one that can actually work. So the morons cannot cast over it ans retrieve, they will foul? Very clever man...please let us know how you can help too, the time is coming again, when the fish are gonna need us. Thanks man
Kuben we are actually on about 4% or lower, since before the industrial revolution...there used to be sardine runs all over the globe...so, yes, you are right, excepting that its already happened.
Was there twice this year and saw 11 Garrick pulled out between 7am and 11am by 2 jiggers, they are definitely harvesting for reselling purposes... we went back on a second trip and the jigging activity was down to one or 2 from 20 people we witnessed doing it the month before, we heard that the estuary had been visited by police.. which is fantastic...
Hey there Leslie thank you for the update and your concern. Yes between the floods and the cops, the damage that the jiggers inflict on the kob and garrick was restricted this year.
Need concrete slabs in that estuary river my man... only way to stop it. I have seen it happen @ sundays river too. Good memories with my old man on both rivers in early 2000's and fishing was perfect. Not sure what it like today.
Tokoloshe, its from failed land management. Government can only be to blame. They have the bakkies and the budgets and are supposed to be looking after our heritage. Not KFC!
Hi I was in PSJ a few weeks ago . The locals showed us how they were jigging , and every tide you can catch 4 to 5 , so that's 10 a day and if you staying for 3 days , you can end up with 30 garrick at the end of your trip .
Well its really sad to see people not thinking about the bigger picture here...I would love to do something to help these innocent fish survive...soon we will have nothing at all
Hi Kieron, well it's that time of the year again and I wonder what could happen next. My appeals to the public have fallen on deaf ears. And DAFF haven't made any indications that they will be there this year, so now what?
Thanks Marius, and we are actually making some good progress creating networks between the different entities. But one thing is for sure, the efforts include community contributions...
That's terrible, unfortunately the people in that area couldn't care less and the visitors from other areas also go there to exploit. They will only get it when there is nothing left
Yeah man Walter. It's the wild west out there nowadays. Nobody checking anybody for anything?! Ezimvelo were so damn good if you remember them...they seem to have just faded away too now.
Yes Duran. Hope authorities worldwide can help with the Chinese thieving. But in the meantime, and closer to home, garrick and kob are endemic really. As in, the Chinese can't get to them, only our own people can. And also sort of endemic as in they are segregated and isolated populations. So, we have to do the looking after of these fragile populations.
So glad someone is talking about this! Great work bud. Keep it up! Its sad that people can't see past their own noses. #fishforthefuture
Thanks pal...

Howzit Henk, I would love to work with Carte Blanche or anyone who cares to help! You have any contacts?
@@TheSardineNews no unfortunately not, I am sure they will have some sort of way for you to get hold of them.
Do it!
Thanks for the work and research you guys are doing for this, we have to keep protecting our Ocean!
Yes we do, at this stage we still just tryna educate. Thank you for the comment!
Oh yeah, please consider subscribing! Thanks man

Yes it's such a shame how ignorant the public are in these matters. Thank you Scottland!
Big ups my man you done a solid here making these video 👍 respect
Much appreciated Craig, takes bloomin ages!!!!
Thanks for this video man, keep exposing its going to be hard but you will need to push on

Eish pal. But ok, we have been formulating plans for PSJ this year. Working with DAFF closely this time. STay posted!
That is just so sad and upsetting. I understand that the people need to eat but can't they think of what they are doing
Yeah man. Thanks Mark
Very informative. So so sad!! Thanks for doiing the job...
Yes but not sure how to go about the next step! Any ideas? Tx!

The sad reality is that things will get worse not only in SA but global. All natural resources will be exhausted to a point of zero recovery.

Wait so we can’t keep Garrick anymore
Only during breeding season, and in specific places, should you NEVER TOUCH A GARRICK!

Oh noooooo not the Sundays! Was wondering when the jigging fools would spread their evil ways...but not all that way! Keep us posted please pal...
In Australia this is called "JAGGING" and also illegal
Dude at least you got enforcers! But ok let's see how the authorities handle the issue this year...tx!
It’s crazy man, those guys are senseless
And hungry! Its the illegal retailers in refrigerator bakkies we need to lay curses on...but thank you for your sentiment!
Why the river mouths close off because they have been dam off higher up the river there is no more flow into the sea and will not get any better.

And you seem to be happy with this? This is a major problem - the species will get wiped out
Hi Keith. Man it is difficult to because not everyone knows or cares. SO we just need to educate as much as we can. Thank you for the comment.
We in America keep a gun in our pockets
Man oh man, we used to be fortunate like that. Don't ever give up that right!
It makes me want to cry honestly.

I would rather not place my real thoughts here. But yap this is South Africa for you
Yeah man understood...
Wow !!!!!!!!! 😳😳
Yeah man guys, please stay in touch, we are busy getting a planned movement together. Watch this space!
Maybe should be declared a sanctuary
Well at least for those few months!
A problem that fixes itself like every estuary in South Africa doomed because humans cannot behave in a way that makes sense.
Very irrational reply for a rational thinker, would you care to elaborate? Pretty please?
So sad our children will pay for this I've seen 80 daga come out there in 1 night and that happened every night for the 3 nights we where there
That's terrible, unfortunately the people in that area couldn't care less and the visitors from other areas also go there to exploit. They will only get it when there is nothing left
Hells Bells Clifford that must have broken your heart pal
I agree 100%
Situation still the same unfortunately
They must go to jail
Yeah Matthew, but ok, making some progress towards next years efforts, stay posted pal
South africa is going backwards because of stuff like this, everything gets fucked up and people dont listen to the laws anymore,it makes me sad,

This is Natal all over again.
Hi Louvendran, sounds like you have some experience from the past times?
There will be nothing left of SA soon.😢
Yip - the jig goes on...
Holy shit.Where DAFF.Most probably sleeping somewhere under a tree.
Yeah man Henry luckily we are formulating a plan, including DAFF as a main player, We hope, we are working towards it.
Sad and definitely wrong, but the Chinese fishing vessels are killing them by the millions.....
