  • (No, this has nothing to do with political arguments.) Join us on Cast Iron Wednesday for a live chat, and cast iron Q&A session. The general subject this week is: LIDS. We take the lids on our pots and pans for granted, and there are quite a few things to talk about when it comes to lids on cast iron pans. Everyone is encouraged to ask questions and answer questions! Topics we can discuss include...
    - Older gate-marked lids
    - Which lid will fit this old skillet or pot?
    - Why did Wagner and other companies stop making lids?
    - What are those spikes on the underside of this lid?
    - How do I clean this &%#*#! lid with those spikes underneath?
    - Details about lids from older cast iron manufacturers, including identifying unmarked lids

    Great presentation! You blew the lid off of eBay quite gracefully. Thank you!

    This past weekend I got a lid identical to the first one you showed, with a three leg, gate mark cauldron at an antique store for $18.00. You have been very inspirational for me. Thank you very much!!!

      The lid fit perfectly on the cauldron so I thought it was for it. 😀

    I couldn’t find a lid for an old bottom gate marked 11 inch spider so I bought a 12 inch round bailed griddle and it fits perfectly. But I’ve never tried to bake with it. Have you ever used a griddle as a lid?

    Great topic. Frequently hard to find lids that fit my pans and ovens. A good Lid frequently adds $50 or more to the price.

    Ahh, lids.... I got into cast iron cooking about a year ago and bought Fields skillets in #8, 10 and 12. Fields recently (like a couple days ago... now they're gone) offered lids to their #8. I scored one. I was hoping for a lid to a #12. I have an Analon 12" skillet with lid that has been my kitchen workhorse for years, and it has held up marvelously. And cleans up like a breeze. But I'd love to use my Fields #12 instead, if it had a lid. I don't understand why modern cast iron manufacturers don't offer lids with their skillets. Do you?

    Many skillet lids went to WWII scrap drives to go to ship building,etc.. You could cook in a skillet without a lid but not in a lid without a skillet!

    It's funny that I didn't know that your video was 2 years old. But I still enjoyed it, I was wondering about a star that is inside one of my lids, who might have made it. And I have a 8CF that has a frying pan lid with a long handle . Thanks for the info 👍 😀 Hello from the high desert of MOJAVE in Phelan California

      More like 10 years ago. Time certainly flies. The 8 CF pan is likely a Lodge chicken fryer, based on the CF mark. As for the other, I may have to ask if you could supply a photo.

    My grandma had a cast iron square pan that had a lid but I never could find it anywhere, I asked my grandpa about it and he said when they lived in northern Wisconsin he had a friend of his who worked with casting make one for grandma and a few more for some other friends. My question is did square pans ever come with a lid?

    I know of a bsr chicken fryer, red mountain, with lid. They are asking 65$, but it spins and wobbles. Is it worth getting it ? Thanks

    • @castironchaos
      @castironchaos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These days that might be an acceptable price for a chicken fryer with lid in good condition. Quite a few BS&R pans were spinners; but if you think the warping is too bad, you can pass it by. A little bit of spinning shouldn't be a problem. My BS&R #10 is also a spinner.

      13 is an unusual size. If you can provide a photo of the bottom where the number is, we may be able to help you identify it.

    I cook with cast iron exclusively and have always taken very good care of them. Last week I came across two old cast iron pans in the oven of my grandmother's guest house. My best guess is that they've been sitting there for a minimum of ten years. The lids are stuck on both pans and I cannot see an easy way to get them off. I thought I'd ask for advice before I try to pry them apart with a tool. There is very little rust on the pans, they're in Arizona which is a low humidity area so hopefully that's not the problem. I'd appreciate any help you can give me to separate these pans from their lids. Thanks!

      I've heard you can soak the bottom part in ice water, and that will contract it enough to loosen the top.

    • @snappingturtle1621
      @snappingturtle1621 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Penetration oil just at where they join let soak. Nice whack with a dead blow plastic hammer will often separate them with little to no damage.

    I read that some really old Dutch ovens had no markings on them at all.

    • @castironchaos
      @castironchaos  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The really old ones are practically guaranteed to at least have a gate mark. The new Asian made dutch ovens often have no markings at all on the top and bottom.

      Actually, I'm keeping the lid and using it. First, it's a near-perfect fit on a Solidteknics 30 cm "BigSkillet", and I'm holding on to it for the possibility that, some day, I may find a BS&R 13 IN camp oven or spider.
