Yo Joel! Big fan! I’m a Naval aviation search and rescue crewman. All aircraft must be under a certain gross weight for their landing gear so, burning fuel is the safest way to ensure your landing gear doesn’t collapse. I’ve seen jets dump fuel in emergencies to get back on deck of air craft carriers. Your pilots did a fine job during an in flight emergency and I’m happy you guys are safe. Any landing you can walk away from is a success. Have a great day man!

In that case, the pilot presumably would not have flown circles and would have just landed. But, in that scenario, no extra fuel would have been burned, and the landing gear would not have been damaged upon landing. Why was there a greater need to burn fuel simply because the landing gear didn't retract after takeoff?

As a commercial aircraft mechanic for 37 years I believe I’m qualified to answer the overweight landing issue. Many of today’s large capacity aircraft carry all or the majority of their fuel in the wings and center of the structure. Most can carry the equivalent of the aircraft’s dry/empty weight in fuel load. All aircraft have a maximum weight limit for flight and landing. We’ve all seen wing flex when looking out a window. I’ve done plenty of inspections due to unusual conditions such as overweight landings. Some but not all aircraft can dump fuel overboard while flying. Most aviators use this as a last resort because of environmental concerns. Your crew handled it well. Apparently there were no emergency concerns they just had to get below the maximum fuel load for landing.

Why did they have to burn fuel simply because the landing gear didn't retract? They knew how long they had to fly before the flight and presumably knew how much fuel they would burn. Joel suggested that the flight was as long; I don't think they flew less. Did they fly slower because the landing gear were down? Did flying w/ the landing gear down make it more likely that the landing gear would fail upon landing?

@JoellKlatt pilot here: the landing weight and takeoff weights are different pretty often. Landing puts more stress on the aircraft than taking off so the weight for landing will usually be less than takeoff weight. Flying a holding pattern to burn fuel and get down to landing weight is pretty common in situations that the pilots have to land earlier than planned. Not a big deal at all hope that helps! @@jbjohnson4728 The original scheduled flight as Joel Klatt said was from Chicago to LA. Which is 1,700 miles at top cruising speed of approximately 450 mph for 4 1/2 hours. That burns a lot of fuel. Since the landing gear didn't retract they chose not to fly to LA and circled around the Chicago area to burn off some of the fuel. An airliner cannot fly at its full cruising speed with its landing gear down; doing so would significantly increase drag and put excessive stress on the landing gear, making it unsafe and significantly reducing the aircraft's speed due to the added aerodynamic resistance; pilots typically only lower the landing gear at much slower speeds during the final approach to landing

WA was the betting favorite over Michigan, so it wasn't as big as surprise to those that have been paying attention to onfield performance of both teams. Michigan's ranking was too high and WA wasn't ranked at all, due to losing a couple of games in which they outplayed opponents but lost on last play of the game due to self-inflicted mistakes (too many penalties and missed FG's).

The landing weight for the landing gear was a good straight by the pilot. If there was a landing gear issue, that means there could be a hydraulic which means you want to take out as many variables as possible in order to make a safe landing. The less weight on the plane means the less pressure on that hydraulic landing gear which means less of a possibility of the gear bottoming out and causing a skid, or worse a crash.

I’m a jet engine mechanic on the kc-135for the military, which is a Boeing 707 airframe, and the main concern is not a big explosion. The primary concern is landing gear failure because the aircraft is so heavy. When the aircraft is that heavy, the nose landing gear could collapse if the pilots don’t land perfectly because that gear isn’t made to take a bunch of weight. By far the easiest way to solve this is to just fly around and burn all of that extra weight. The other thing, and this is more of a guess, is that the extra weight in the wings, because that’s were most fuel tanks are stored in heavy aircraft, could cause structural failure if a hard landing occurred. That’s more speculation though as I have no experience with the structural integrity of an aircraft

Burning fuel: Im sure enough other people have said similar things but... First, there is a difference between what is possible versus what is safest... obviously, if a pilot HAS to put the plane on the ground with a full load of fuel, they can, but it will likely result in damage or just a very much higher risk than is needed for a situation like you were in where they could go the safer route. Second, just because they lower the overall weight of the aircraft, it is no where near empty, if you are in a situation where there could be a fire on landing, it wouldnt make that much of a difference, some, but it is NOT part of the consideration.
Long story short, your United Airlines pilots followed procedure to remove as many risks as possible to safely and professionally get you and everyone else on the ground... Thats all.

Hey Joel big fan man. I’ve been through flight school and yes you have a gross takeoff weight and a gross landing weight. They are different for each aircraft and are calculated prior to every flight using mathematical formulas. You calculate so that the landing weight will be within specification by the time you reach your destination due to fuel burn-off. Since your flight had an emergency and could not complete the flight, it did not have the time to burn off the fuel and get the plane within landing weight specification so the pilots had to fly around in the holding pattern to burn it off to shed the weight to get it within spec. Now if it had been a more serious emergency where they had to land immediately. You can do it it is just not ideal and raises the risk of a bad landing where the gear is damaged or even possibly collapses. Because the emergency was not that serious it made no sense for the pilots to risk that. So they made the correct decision and did a good job. It sucks as the passenger when things like that happen but it is for the safety of everyone on board that the pilots made that decision.

Hey Joel love watching your shows. I did 11 plus years in avionics and have been around numerous aircraft. Three reason they had to burn fuel is because when the plane is heavier it takes more runway to land. So they will burn the fuel on purpose to make the plane lighter for a shorter runway distance to land. It is standard procedure for this to happen. The pilots did a great job in this situation.

Hey Joel! As a Michigan fan, I can tell you what’s wrong with Michigans defense in the 4th quarter. Wink Martindale is just a horrible defensive coordinator and doesn’t know how to call a defense, especially in the 4th quarter. It’s embarrassing to watch my team play this horribly on defense, especially because it’s really not the players fault, bc our coordinator isn’t calling good plays
