I watched the entire video, and I was really surprised by your level of Japanese. As your tutor mentioned, your word choice is very natural, and your grammar is nearly perfect. Your comprehension is excellent. Sometimes, you may struggle with words in conversations, but you have a vast passive vocabulary. I expect you’ll reach a near-native level in 2 years. I can relate to your experience because I’ve been studying English through immersion, using only input, just like you. Currently, I’ve been practicing speaking in online lessons for 2 months and working on my writing, such as Twitter and TH-cam comments, just like this one. I also started using Migaku, thanks to your video, and it’s been an amazing tool. I’m still at 5k Anki decks because I started using Anki 2 years ago, but I aim to reach 20k in 1-2 years with Migaku. I'm also trying to learn Japanese but I'm at a much earlier stage (around 110 days or so) and sometimes the amount of work ahead of me seems impossible, but when i watch your videos and see how far you've come it gives me inspiration to keep grinding away at the vicab and grammar. I can't imagine adding subtitles through Premiere Pro (or any other program for 'typical' video editing, like the mentioned Premiere Pro or Sony Vegas). While creating ASS subtitles as long as here, i.e. 30 minutes, doing from scratch I myself would spend up to 3h, but in such a program with 2/3 times longer.... I can't imagine how much it took you. Probably also a matter of getting used to it and practice Love your channel, keep it up! Edit: Of course I meant using Aegisub for subtitling

If you have a script of your subtitles uploading them to youtube and having it auto-time it would be super amazing for sentence mining from this video or videos you plan on making like it and it might help with SEO, and if you narrate off a script you can always do it for English too without much extra effort. Your 600 days japanese learning video was probably the video that got me into learning japanese in the first place. That video motivated me to just go "why not" to starting Japanese and I was quite surprised at how long I lasted studying consistently lol. I've lost the consistency for more than a year now, but I think this might motivate me to restart and go even further. It's always fun watching your Japanese learning journey. It's consistently been a great encouragement to me because I am reminded that I can keep getting better if I keep putting the time in. it's also been a good resource for finding new learning methods to try out. Heck, your last italki video was a good push for me to start using italki. Originally, I had considered holding off on output practice, particularly speaking, until I reached 3 years of learning the language (or maybe even later, because of how daunting speaking in Japanese actually is), but thanks to your last italki vid, I convinced myself to start earlier and to make my output practice consistent. I've been using italki for output practice for at least one hour a week for 3 months now, and it's fun to see myself gradually improving and getting more confident with each lesson. As always, thanks for all the effort you put into your videos!

I've got a 75 day streak on anki and duo right now for jp, I've always been interested in learning it. I'm very much the same as you, I was never really interested in manga or anime before starting to learn, other than stuff like beastars or BNA etc. My name comes from a conversation I had with a japanese speaking friend like 5 years ago, so I think it's kinda been on my mind since about then But I've never really been able to stick to learning something, especially something as big as learning a language. The road to some preconcieved notion of "success" always seemed so long and arduous, and I never felt like I would be able to follow through with it. I've seen a lot of other channels discuss methods to get into learning, but none of them fit my style of learning like yours did.

You're comparing yourself to native speakers because that's all you listen to all the time but if you compared yourself to other Japanese learners you'd have better perspective. You do hesitate in some spots where natives or even other learners with more output experience wouldn't but then correct yourself but this doesn't happen constantly only sometimes and I would feel very comfortable talking to you in Japanese about any topic at all. I've taken group N1/N2 classes which is pretty much as high as it gets and you sound a bit better than most of the other students because you clearly have a large vocabulary even if it's not all at your fingertips. That said doing some more output earlier would have been ok. But while some people might have hit a plateau just doing only input I think your Japanese kept growing through input alone throughout all your studying. Must be nice! I got tripped up on that 保険, 保健 bit too.

I think in some ways it's good to compare myself to native speakers, but only just to have a direction to aim towards, even if it seems a bit unrealistic in the mid-term, but it's fine since for now I'm still motivated to keep on going st my own pace :)

I suggest for anyone trying to learn a language to try writing in that language and formulating sentences and paragraphs in writing, you can just write anything, your thoughts or what you did today ect. I also suggest just BSing if needed, don't try to be perfect or check up on every single thing, just get it done, do it everyday, and then at the end, maybe check, but don't be perfectionist, broken english is much better than no english at all, so you don't need to get all the words right, so long as you can get your basic message across, you succeeded and can get better after, but you have the ability to live in that country of that language is the goal.

It's possible! As for 日本語 being heiban, I do know that one, which is why when I wanted to say 日本 in atamadaka, for some reason I said 日本語 in heiban instead :) But I still make mistakes on words I even know, for example I said Estonia in English a few times by accident and so on.
Can’t wait to watch! I “finished” the core 6k deck in a bit over a year, but haven’t really added much in the past two months. It’s pretty much just Anki reviews and some listening here or there. Should I really just bite the bullet and start sentence mining? I’ve tried it a few times and I feel like I have it paused longer than I’m playing it which is frustrating
It was like that for me too. Plenty of words learned and relativ ease with learner content but native was just like I haven't learned much at all. Really you just have to bite the bullet and do it, it will only get easier over time. Textbooks and decks aren't really gonna teach you to deal with casual speech much. You will have to learn it from native content directly. Though some content is much easier then others and subtitles help alot.
it used to take me like 2+ hours to get through a 20 minute anime episode. most the time i'd just get like half way through even. after like a year of pretty lazy consistence its like 30 minutes or less now. im also old and impaired quite often. you will be golden.@@Kyjor_
Lmao at the point about explaining what Anki is. Literally every time I talk with someone in French and tell them I learnt it in a few years, I always do the same monologue.
How did you manage to have written conversations in japanese every day? Did you make a Japanese friend or did you use some service? Its kind of hard to make Japanese online friends when the time zones are so different you basically don't run into them online
I only did a sentence card deck from that book a long time ago, I stopped doing it after I finished the core 2k/6k, so a few years ago by now. Its fine to just revisit the chapters, recently I revisited a few myself and I can say that it soaks in like a sponge now compared to before.

Can’t wait to watch! I “finished” the core 6k deck in a bit over a year, but haven’t really added much in the past two months. It’s pretty much just Anki reviews and some listening here or there. Should I really just bite the bullet and start sentence mining? I’ve tried it a few times and I feel like I have it paused longer than I’m playing it which is frustrating
It was like that for me too. Plenty of words learned and relativ ease with learner content but native was just like I haven't learned much at all. Really you just have to bite the bullet and do it, it will only get easier over time. Textbooks and decks aren't really gonna teach you to deal with casual speech much. You will have to learn it from native content directly. Though some content is much easier then others and subtitles help alot.
Sentence mining is like the best thing to do in order to improve comprehension imo, go for it!

it used to take me like 2+ hours to get through a 20 minute anime episode. most the time i'd just get like half way through even. after like a year of pretty lazy consistence its like 30 minutes or less now. im also old and impaired quite often. you will be golden.@@Kyjor_

How did you manage to have written conversations in japanese every day? Did you make a Japanese friend or did you use some service? Its kind of hard to make Japanese online friends when the time zones are so different you basically don't run into them online
I just chat with my Japanese friend via text in Japanese now that I've been chatting in English with for years.

I only did a sentence card deck from that book a long time ago, I stopped doing it after I finished the core 2k/6k, so a few years ago by now. Its fine to just revisit the chapters, recently I revisited a few myself and I can say that it soaks in like a sponge now compared to before.

It was just my own recording and subtitles that imitated a scenario I had whilst outputting in the same world.

@Livakivi hahaha that's understandable. I think it would be a good video to make.... showing the resources you use and how you actually learn. Like what exercises ect you do. I particularly struggle with this as I never really went to school and I don't know how to structure my learning.
